I wonder if there are any tricks are around to make google earth or maps to work in offline mode (both for searching and browsing) I still love my maemo5 deeply :D

Not with today's technology. The earth app is only 5.69 MB, just like a 5 - 8 MB picture if no dl...

Can't the maps at least be loaded for offline use? I understand searching might strictly require data connection.

Google map, yes. Google earth, No.

Re: Nitdroid: GPS works already

From a noob's point of view, nitdroid able to run earth is really a big deal. Earth is very pictoral intense, with vast amount of information, pictures, embedded text as well as gps, running on a variation of android platform, without crashing. I really think it is a big deal. even my desktop winXP media center edition crashed 50% of the time!

Tell me I do not know what I am talking about, I still think it is a marvellous job from the nitdroid team. To run this offline? Not a chance.

Re: Nitdroid: GPS works already

I dual-boot Maemo5 and Nitdroid once in a while. Right now I have a clean Maemo5. I had to reflash while having problems running out of rootfs space and uninstalling multiboot. Seeing Google Earth runs on Nitdroid urges to me reinstall again :D I don't have an external GPS and still waiting for it to be resolved before I delve into android lands again. Still there are lots to be discovered in Maemo5 lands.

Offline loading was a general question if it were ever hacked in general Android community.

Thanks for this. Nice to be able to play with those apps that require GPS now. Worked fine with Maps and SkyDroid.

Also, did not interfere with Bluetooth Mouse GPS, so using an external GPS is still an option.

On that note, external GPS worked fine with SkyDroid while playing a round of golf the other night. I purchased the full version of Bluetooth Mouse GPS, no disconnects the entire round worked very well.

I've found the most reliable way for me is to boot NitDroid, un-pair then re-pair my GPS from the settings menu, then start Bluetooth Mouse GPS service, then connect to the external GPS.

Found a really good free programme that someone has developed.
Its called BlueGPS4droid. It allows you to connect external devices in any programme from Maps to Navigation.
There is no trial or time limit and it just works.
Don't know if its in the market but I found it here post #19
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=8158118

Direct download link
http://sourceforge.net/p/bluegps4droid/home/

I accept no responsibility for this software, developer is distributing as freeware but usual warnings about using external software ect.

Just download .apk save to dir on N900 /home/user/MyDocs/extras is a good place.
In NitDroid download any file manager from Market I use OIFilemanager.
Navigate to extras folder.Click and install.
Remember to allow external applications to be installed in settings.
Enjoy Google Maps with voice guidance for free.
Writing this on N900 spelling mistakes ect.

Re: Nitdroid: GPS works already

Downloaded BlueGPS4droid. Worked just as easily as Bluetooth Mouse GPS. Stayed connected for the drive home, navigation worked fine.

Now I almost wish I hadn't paid for Bluetooth Mouse GPS. O well, it was only $3.

You are very off topic for this. Go to forum.nitdroid.com or one of the help threads here. Sounds like you need a fasted sd card.

According to this link it is possible to offline use GE on iPhone's. Is there any caching option for the Android version?

Earth Android app preinstalled is less than 6mb, but almost 30mb when installed.

Re: Nitdroid: GPS works already

Why is it so hard to get the N900 's GPS up and running?
Is there a problem with drivers? or is there other stuff?

I also found this:
http://dev.openaos.org/ticket/116

This describes how to use the nl5350 gps with Android, i think...
