Definitely a buyer-beware market these days for anyone who likes to step outside the bounds of what device manufacturers have in mind.

Yes, and it is not just the manufacturers you'll need to watch. Nokia has already indicated that some carriers may lock down MeeGo phones to prevent even leaving the DRM-locked mode.

What are the major PR1.2 bugs, that should be fixed in PR1.3?

Some Bluetooth stuff, swipe for answer a call and you are unable to sort EMails by size or subject.

Eesh, looks like the N900 will by my Meego/Nitdroid/Maemo device until I get an Android smartphone. Then the N900 will be the Maemo/Meego device (or Meego once projects like EasyDebian are on there).

Though I guess that depends on if the hacking community will turn out like Android (flashing custom ROMS and what not).

Are those actual fixes or suggestions? I don't think Nokia would implement swipe to answer a call.

I have said that bugs tend to have priorities and priorities are subjective and I have to say that sorting emails by subject or size is the lowest of all things that I would want. Why on earth? I agree that sorting could be there but really? IMO there is something fundamentally wrong in email usage flow if you really really need those features.

I would like to have threaded messages and speed and well speed and did I say speed.

But yeah. Here is bugzilla search result for modest with following settings
- No unconfirmed bugs
- Only bugs and enhancements that have at least 10 votes
- sorted by votes
Bugzilla - maemo - modest

And here is what at least has been fixed for next PR.
Bugzilla link

BUT it seems that also lots of other stuff will be included:
http://gitorious.org/modest/modest

And here is list of fixed bugs in general
link
Remember that there is possibly more fixes than what you can see from bugzilla.

But it could be just as well, there is nothing keeping if from being whatever the heck it wants. Just because Nokia meant it to be a geek phone doesn't mean we should pay for it.

I understand the saying "it was never meant to" when you talk about support pillars, car chassis, feet - they were designed to do something and the other stuff comes over the original design. You want to build a bigger bridge, you need bigger pillars - you can't just go happy adding more - it's not the same. You can't put a 500HP engine on a city ultra-compact, unless you weld it to a tank. And you can't just run 500 KPH, you need a vehicle.

But software? Open software, at that? On a computer?

It just seems silly that we have a device "meant" do do something not do something else. It has a menu, a touchscreen and he ability to run apps. What exactly is it lacking to be a business phone? Encryption? It can't POSSIBLY be that hard. Office? Someone ported office abilities to just about every platform and OS out there, on platforms that has one tenth of N900's processing power.

Not sure I have a point, really. It seemed like I had one. Down with Nokia and preset niches, I guess.

How about usable Maps?. Search in calendar?. Save settings is almost all Nokia apps (like photo's, one can filter view, but not save the settings). Device wide search?.

Nokia has left a lot of things half-done.

Indeed, which is why I buy my phones direct from the manufacturer (well, "direct") and never via the carrier. Again, buyer beware.
