Hi ,

Just one question to understand. Does the new OVI maps on N8 also made on qt 4.6? if so why they are not porting onto N900?


I asked the same question on ovi blog but didn't get a good answer.

Anyone from NOKIA who might be watching this forum can answer?

pee on ovi maps.there are far better navi apps for the n900 and they aren't really expensive

Hopefully the next firmware will give the phone somewhat of a facelift.. it seems it will be close if 'comment 30' is to be believed. It may not be PR1.3 either..

An update to Flash would be nice but i'm getting by just fine with the web on my N900 as it is.

I would be more concerned how it drops calls if I have a few apps running.. the screen flips to phone but when i push answer it just locks.. can be frustrating.

The N900 is one of the few phones where a firmware update can be truly significant, lets hope us users haven't been left by the roadside if or when the powers that be decide to release something.. it's a phone that could easily live for as long as the E71 if it's given support.

I do not know how many times this has been said but UI of maemo 5 is regarded as STABLE according to Nokia (if you want link I can search. Have seen statement couple of times in bugzilla). Any changes you are going to see are only to modules that are open source and which community is able to change. For example hildon-desktop.

And to those who are still having doubt about firmware releases. As we currently know the 1.3 is coming and also I have lately seen couple of bug comments from bugmaster that indicate that not all bug fixes arrive to 1.3 but they are fixed in internal releases. SO that makes you wonder about future :)

Yes broken things are fixed of course but I was trying to say that enhanctment request regarding UI seem to be pretty low on priority list.

But surely the whole idea is to fix the pre-existing bugs..expecting any more than that is frankly, quite unrealistic.

I don't doubt that they do regard the UI as stable, for the most part it is. But i somehow doubt I am the only one who has received a call while having a few apps running and found the phone function to be unresponsive?

I understand that the N900 is considered a mobile computer (which can also make calls) however, if they can't get that feature 100% right for Maemo after two firmware updates, it's not looking totally positive for MeeGo whenever it finally comes out.

Although maybe these newer phones will have much more power to cope with the processing strain of a call coming in :)

Yeah i think they will keep making OSes.

None of symbian devices support newer firmware OS version

-Maemo1->Maeemo2->Maemo3->4->Maemo5->(Maemo6) ->MeeGo -> X

770 lasted 2years with OS updated to Maemo3
N800 lasted 1year nearly two years upto maemo4
N810 lasted 1year and half and Maemo4
N900 lasted X-months/year Maemo5 (Alternative NITdroid, Unofficial MeeGo support)

So what will happened to N9? No one know.

I am pretty sure n9 with maemo will be the device, the os, that will last longer than other did. And it won't be only n9 which will have new Meego but at least one more(I can expect two more but not more than that) device with meego will be released in 2011. Those who got n900 are kind of left behind but that won't happen to n9 and commercial developers will be interested in n9 as well as other meego devices as well. I just hope they would give another 50000 reasons to develop app for n9. But its totally my own opinion, and I may turn out to be wrong later on.

Okey so we are talking different things then. It´s well known that next PR should fix some issues with phone app (glitch with rotating? or with app waking up) for people who prefer using it in portrait mode. I thought that you believed that there will be "face-lifts" in UI.

Oh not at all.. it would be nice, but certainly not essential.

If things work a little faster and the phone app stops freezing occasionally i'll be happy.

However, an update to flash, maps and the application manager would be great :)

I was also hoping that PR 1.3 would bring update to Maps. Currently it,s quite useless for navigation.

But Nokia,s attidude answering any question concerning N900 ( deep silence) makes me believe that future PR's are just tiny UI fixes and some bug fixes. Core apps will not get new functionalities, I'm afraid. Maemo is practically abandoned by Nokia.

Correct me, if I'm wrong. I have not found any statements from Nokia.

I have my phone application set-up as always upright, and start when turned. Also, I usually keep it running at all times, as well as the phonebook. I suppose the autostart isn't really necessary.

Also, I'm using the 'swappolube' optimisations (I did them manually) - they really do help.

I wonder if PR1.3 will never come, just an update to Qt 4.7 Mobility by itself only? There's a ton of fixes out there, but seeing them implemented might not happen.

The only thing I wait for that has something to do with the N900 is the arrival of Nokia's MeeGo product.

I say we get one more firmware update to fix bugs that Nokia see as important to fix before completely burying the device. I'm thinking mid 2011.

Far east rumor is PR1.3 will be build 36-2, is imminent and could happen this week. Don't keep your hope high, though, just in case Nokia slips schedule again.

ok on my facebook i was told by nokia that a firmware update will be coming soon they also told me that maemo os canot support turn by turn navigation but thats a seperate issue .
