hi guys! please pardon me if i am annoying!

hello how are you!

i am expecting my nokia n900 in the mail by tuesday.

i am currently using the n96 , and i do know they are completely different ends of the spectrum.

i am just looking for some guidance and tips and just general help with my device when it arrives because it seems so overwhelming, yet i do not want to shy away from using such a powerful and under the radar device.

i have seen videos of folks using snes and n64 on their n900 with hdmi connecting to the plasma screen tv with ps3 controllers using to control the game action, upon sight of such, i was sold on the n900.

what a device!

again, sorry in advance for being such a newbie to the n900 and i please ask for your patience with me!

thank you!!:)

Welcome.

What is your question exactly? if you have any questions first try to search in the search box (or google?) and if you are lost then post them here and we can help you.

first welcome.
the community will help you in all your questions.
dont be shy:)
and btw it wasn't a hdmi cable cause the n900 doesn't have a hdmi out.
it was a simple AV cable.

Re: hi guys! please pardon me if i am annoying!

thank you guys for the pleasant greetings!

i am just curious as to what are the MUST HAVE apps to download, and the way in which to install them.

also, i am just curious as to upon receipt of my device, if it will have thee most up to date firmware or will i have to manually do that and how that is done.

i hope to become a helpful member of an already helpful community!

thank you in advance! :)

IT might be a good idea to check the wiki, it doesn't have all the info, but has quite a bit

As you said the n900 can be pretty overwhelming and thus pretty hard to explain.. It will take you probably a month or more before you do. So make a habit to use search and google. Most is already written.

It's difficult to recommend anything as you didn't tell your background.

A couple of programs you should look more into:
rootsh, leafpad, queen beecon widget, dropn900, faster application manager, opera, firefox, symfonie, groove, fcamera, filebox, mupen64plus... e.t.c.

Learn about the repositories.. like http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing and http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel

Overclocking and how to make your own profiles. It will make your device faster and use less battery if you master it.

How to flash.. it's easy but can be frightening at first. http://wiki.maemo.org/Reflash

And try to read up on the programs before you use them. A couple are not finished even though they are fully working. Some basic knowledge of the terminal would also come in handy (maybe install bash)..

besides some you mentioned, i also consider Midnight Commander to one of the essentials

Go to google and search for:
Code:

site:talk.maemo.org n900 best apps games
Here's a list I got from that search:

This thread and this thread and this thread and this thread have some good lists.

I think you will get some more threads that might help you with that google search. Try different keywords if you want.

And http://my-maemo.com/ has a list of apps and games with screenshots and descriptions. Worth looking.

A basic tutorial on HOW to install the apps and games once you know what you want:

1. Add repositories in the application manager. Follow this link and read the warnings please: http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/m...-applications/
2. You can look for games and apps in the repositories (previous link should help you add them if you haven't already).
3. There are games and apps in the OVI store too (there's a link on your device.)

Here's what I did before I got my N900:
I went here.
Also here.

And I read just about everything I could find out about it. I watched some youtube videos. I played with the repositories, like they said. Even though I hadn't played with Linux in many moons, I had a leg up because my brother got the same phone first.

Read up on this phone. I shudder when I think I almost got an iPhone 3GS or Nexus One. I was that close (I'm doing it with my forefinger and thumb. I know you can't see it, but trust me, it was close.).
