Spamming votes is bad when there's profit involved, say winners have the tangible benefit. (e.g. any similar competition involved Microsoft products)

However, (under the assumption that) nobody receives tangible benefits in the outcome*, it's a pretty fair mechanism to determine the popularity of a product/person.

(of course for this to hold, we must also assume there're non-zero transaction cost for multiple votes. In this case, the time to reload the webpage and vote again bares a non-zero transaction cost. If we can enter no. of votes before hitting vote button, then it's called zero transaction cost for multiple votes. Let me skip all the boring parts in assumption)

Some researchers are even interested in studying on which participants could receive most multiple votes from single sources, that could be an indicator of determine which product/person has more die-hard fans (so to say, highly persistent supporters).

That's to say, if N900 won, I'd really enjoy the victory. XD

*Note: Of course, the website holds this competition has the tangible benefit for increasing hitrate, but that doesn't affect the fairness, normally.

I think you'te confusing gebrick with someone else. Ok, so he comes off as a douche with his patronizing "I'm better than you because I'm not enthusiastic about my N900" attitude in that post, but he's a member who often comes with insight and constructive critisism imo. He's also an N900 owner (and user I think)

this is not real competition.
I have Nokia and my father has Samsung.
They are both great phones with their bugs, pluses and minuses.
They are in different categories and different target user groups.
The community is great no doubt.

I currently have three (3) phones, namely .....

(2) N900's
and
(1) Samsung Galaxy S.

Each has it's strength and weakness.

The N900 handles serious business (banking website, network device configuration/management/monitoring etc) without breaking a sweat. It also has hardware advantages (physical keyboard/infra-red/FM-transmitter etc) that I use regularly.

The Galaxy S is untouchable in multimedia (video/audio/pictures) and the android OS gives it a multitude of applications (freedom of choice/options ).

Personally, I'm torn between the two. If I had to pick one at Gun-Point, I'd probably get shot dead.

I've participated in all the polls thus far and predicted this final earlier in this very thread.


Now I'll just watch to see which emerges Champ.

You misunderstood my post. I actually agree with him. I posted a while back practically the same thing. It's a silly poll and not worth fussing.

And I don't mind gerbick..although his negativity sometimes annoys me he finally bought an N900, so his criticism is finally acceptable. And his posts as you said are usually clever.

But there sadly are the kind of users I described. You shouldn't go to a competitor forum just to insult them.

Australia is actually a continent - in that it refers to the same continental landmass that includes Australia and some other islands which are part of the same shelf.

Re-read this thread. There's plenty of comments where people are stating that you should vote often; thus "stuffing the ballot box".

I'm just not admiring the fact that folks are multiple voting... and honestly surprised that this poll didn't have measurements to avoid that kind of abuse.

Australia is not a whole continent. Australasia is a continent but also known as Oceania (supercontinent). Australia is a country, yes it is big and can also claimed to be a continent by itself you are correct on this but not entirely.

Fact: middle east is part of asia and Europe
Australia is the biggest chunk of Oceania, which only included PNG, Phillipines and Australia. New Zealand is not included in this matter. Oceania is everything in the supercontinent in the pacific region. Also Oceania is also called the Australasia.

Correct me if i'm wrong. Look at the continent's map :)

Well, there is no such security to preventing a double post. Even with unique Identification login can be duplicated by making two or more IDs. Not to mention ISP Ip address. Thus if they blocked the iSP Ip then there will only few people to vote for the poll. If they do it by UserName and IP then what about the different IP with different username?

On the otherside it is impossible to have one vote per person because this is just how the nature the internet voting is.

Yeah... but purposely taking advantage of the ability to do multiple votes is what I'm talking about. Not if it's possible (it is) or that it's right or wrong (I don't care) nor if the people here shouldn't or should be doing it (I'm for fairness) and whether or not the victory is worth anything or not (I personally say it's an empty win)...

The nature of the Internet isn't that you should cheat as much as possible to make your preferential choice the one that wins... it just happens a whole helluva lot so people just accept it.

I just don't have to accept it. Regardless... it's a done deal, enjoy the results. I'm quite sure it means so much...

@Gebrick I understand your point that people shouldn't take advantage of the system and so on and so forth, but the fact that you say it's an empty win and not worth anything because someone takes advantage is invalid in my opinion. In that case we'd have to assume that that N900 users have lower morale than other smartphone users, and I don't think that is the case. The exploits are the same to everyone. As I said before, this vote is all about community, and we have that in spades.

PS I didn't call you a douche, I said you came off as a douche. Meaning that if that were the only post I'd ever read from you I'd think you were a douche. I know that is not the case, and that's why I defended you in the same post.
