Nokia and AT&T announce $10 million App Developer Contest. N900 App Developers, this is a good opportunity for you!
Nokia and AT&T have just announced a $10 million App Developer Contest. I know there are alot of N900 app developers. This is the time to give your app exposure because the winner also wins USD 6 million in marketing promotion by Nokia and AT&T in the North American market.

Beeeecause the N900 was MADE to work so well with AT&T? Let's hope THIS doesn't become as misguided as Nokia's designing around T-Mobile did, eh?

This is most likely for Symbian^3 apps, not for the currently abandoned Maemo. Well, maybe a Meego app might win something, although I doubt it.

Won't the S^3 apps run on maemo and meego?

And maybe if we could actually keep the carriers in check, things might not suck so badly in terms of handset options here. |

Now all we need is for an upgrade for our N900's so that we can use AT&T's 3G/3.5G service like my trusty E71. My N900 is stuck on 2.5 on AT&T. Is it hardware based or software based ? Ugh, Nokia does it again !

If it runs on the N8, it qualifies. So you can write an app in Qt if you want. It just needs to be published to the N8 apps store. Of course you'd know this if you read the linked page...

"modular" is pretty hard to do, that implies that anyone should be able to swap it out. probably the retention device would add some wasted space to the internals of the phone. And you'd still need to unscrew the back and it's easy for a noob to leave a screw rattling around and short the thing out, or get dust onto the lcd, or lots of other bad things. i'd be happy if they just used similar parts in all their phones, so that we could cut the thing out and solder in a replacement if we really wanted. and if we needed a firmware update or something, nokia could provide that since they insist on keeping the low level stuff closed-source.

Guys, how about getting back on topic? Want to rant about Nokia and AT&T's tempestuous relationship? Start a new thread.

i had to switch providers, to a new company that drops lots of calls, has bad coverage, higher rates... *cough* WIND *cough*
but at the same time, i never expected Nokia to release this phone at all. and i never expected a new provider to come along and have the right frequencies for 3G. my point is, your complaints are valid, but Nokia never really wanted to put the work in to sell this phone to our countries properly. that doesn't make me happy about their decisions, but i don't see how i have any right to complain since i am lucky it works and exists at all. this contest is ONLY for North Americans. I'm surprised Canada is included since it's connected to AT&T and we don't have that. so, i would save your complaining until every app is written in symbian. then we can at least stay on topic while complaining ;) |

I have my N900 and I like it very much. I also have my N97. I hope they make more apps for the N900 as there are so many Symbian Apps and they are so easy to install. One big plus would be if you could use Mobipocket. Ebook reader only does some books and its hard to use. I use my N900 just fine on AT&T. Like I said, it just seems like you are stuck with so few apps and now it looks like Maemo is going away and Meego is coming in but from what I have read it will not be porterd or usable on the N900.
Thanks, Bobby |
