JoikuSpot Premium N900 -- does it work?

Hi, I'm considering to buy JoikuSpot from the OVI store but I've got some questions first which maybe can be answered by someone who it really knows?

1) Does it provide the phone's 3G connection via a WIFI HotSpot and does it reliable work?

I read something about missing features and problems of the maemo kernel and that a wifi hotspot couldn't work. So, I wonder if JoikuSpot works with PR1.2 and the original kernel.

2) Can JoikuSpot also be a router for the phone's WIFI (not the 3G) connection?

Means, I connect with the N900 to a WIFI-Hotspot which JoikuSpot then provides to one or more other devices?

3) Can a Sony PSPgo access the internet and PSN via JoikuSpot on N900?

Thanks,
nexus

Yes, it is reliable and it shares the 3G connection over WiFi

I'm not sure how you can share the device's WiFi connection over... well... WiFi, so I guess that's a no on the HW level.
As for PSPs and PS3s, as well as Android phones (well, not rooted ones anyways), these don't support Ad-Hoc connections, so nope, you can't use it with them.

Being an OSS (Open Source Software) fan, I've switched to mobilehotspot, which is free and available in the repos, you could try that, which works equally as well.

I've been using premium for a while and it works great, but agree that the free mobile hotspot from the repos is equally as good and free.

i have had issues with joikuspot over long term usage - anything more than about an hour and all ip traffic from my laptop to the n900 seems to stop. i now use bluetooth tethering for a single device connection and only switch to joikuspot when i need to share the connection with more than one device.

mobilehotspot requires a custom kernel, right? I really don't know if I want to switch the original kernal. Hm. Sounds dangerous? Would a psp work with mobilehotspot? Thanks.

i paid for the premium joikuspot and while i dont regret the purchase, i too have begun to use the bluetooth modem and the primary tethering connection and it works flawlessly 99% of the time where joiku tends to crap out often.

I've tried it (after paying for it) multiple times and it's failed to work every time. I need to try to play with it again, but it seems odd that for an app that is supposed to "just work" it "just didn't". I'm hoping though, as I need it!

Nope, not at all, flashing a custom kernel (from a trusted source) is completely safe.
The PSP won't work with anything that uses Ad-Hoc, sony limitations.

They have a 2 day special on now (5 euro) , so i purchased it. It will not install. i wonder if that is because i use an overclocked kernel (2.6.28.10power 40). i uninstalled mobilehotspot thinking that might be the problem (could never connect to it from my laptop) but still no joy. That application manager sure is slow since the latest maemo upgrade.

Whats the error/what does it do/what does it not do?

@tabe_ape

Good that you mentioned that, so i bought JoikuSpot for 5 Euros to test it.
Actually, I'm writing this here via JoikuSpot on my N900 with my laptop and it works for a first shot very fine and connections via 3G is fast enough for surfing the web with a laptop :-)

If it's reliable over a longer time intervall, I can't say yet but I only need it occationally anyway.

The free version 'mobilehotspot' would be nice, too, but I don't want (yet) to replace the original kernel because .. never change a running system, right?

nexus

PS.

This site:

https://www.kabeldeutschland.de/info...speedtest.html

gives me ca 2.5 Mbit/s for download and 0.119MBit/s for upload.
That's fast enough for me :-D

PPS; JoikuSpot claimes a even the following maximum speed:
for download 3,60Mbit/s and 236,40 kbit/s for upload.

Turns out i have bigger problems! a Wallet update failed, and i can't install anything.

i checked the Application Manager log, and it indicates an input/output error with /home/user/MyDocs. in the past i have had files and whole directories disappear from MyDocs and have worked around it by putting everything on the SD card. Now it looks like i am going to have to reflash the eMMS:(

..... charging the battery .... backing up .... backing up .....

Re: JoikuSpot Premium N900 -- does it work?

Meanwhile, i have tried JoikuSpot a little more and found some problems :-|

WEP-Encryption (64- or 128-Bit) does not seem to work. At least, I cannot connect to JoikuSpot with my laptop while it works fine without encryption. That's a little bit annoying and doesn't feel good -- even when WEP is not the best encryption method.

maybe I switch to the power kernel someday .. ;-)

Thanks all for the responses.
