I donīt know exactly what it is youīre trying to say: I did all those things you suggested and naturally, when I mention that itīs a bit of a pain in the ***, changing things like icons because of a theme change, I mean that it is a bit of a pain in the ***. I tend to switch between the graffiti theme and more minimal, cleaner themes. What suits one, does not necesarely suit the other. Hence the question being asked, in particular from a usability point of view.

I understand what you mean now, but your original post didn't make any reference to backgrounds and icons changing, which was my point.

anyway, as for the topic in hand, do you use the same themes and rotate them? Because if you do, you could just create the images and then when you change the themes and icons just switch the desktop switcher icons too.

If that was unclear to you, than what does the word "theme" entail for you? Icons, background are not included?

We seem to be bad communicators as of course I know how to do this, but that is completely besides the point. From a usability point of view, it would be kind of nice to either be able to choose or to have an easy, less time-consuming way of dealing with the way this widget looks. That was and is all Iīm asking for.

Now, considering the fact itīs possible the author of this widget is in no way interested in doing this, I asked for the source code, in order to be able to do it myself. So far, none of the two questions have had a reply other than the obvious being stated.

When i change theme, no, my icons and backgrounds are unaffected because i don't use the default backgrounds. Even when i had black plastic i told it keep default backgrounds and hicolor icons.

I agree with your suggestion, but that's why i said 'for the time being' i.e. a temporary fix if Nicolai does decide to include this in the next release

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Hi anthonie,

Yes it is possible to make the icons configurable or add an
option, so the user can select if he wants the builtin icon, or
a custom icon or use a scaled down background as icon.

If I can find the time, I can implement this.
And the source code is open, you can find the link from the
maemo package view page

Thank you for your feedback and this idea
and thank you
richwhite for your hint for a temporary workaround.

regards
Nicolai

Just a minor usage note.

I use the system with 8 transportation icons on the first view and previously just used one transportation icon linking to view 1 on all the other views.

Now I have added what I call the left and right carets under each icon linking to view one. This is a lot better than swiping left and right, I find.

Also, note in the screenshot that should follow, the little number up in the status area. That tells me the number of view I am in. There's an app that does that. I don't really need it, but I find it nice.

Edit -- I just had a thought -- maybe an impossible thought. That little number 7 in the status bar -- wouldn't it be nice if you could click it and you'd get a popup list of the numbers of all the views except the one you are in? Then you could click on the view you wanted to go to?

It might be a nice alternate transportation method, if possible.

Impossible, yes/no. This is a statusbar plugin. They can not react
on click events. But statusbar plugins can add buttons to the
statusbar menu. But I don't think it would be useful to add
a statusbar menu to switch between desktops.

I would really like to see this desktop widget in extras. I think
many users who are afraid to use extras-devel repository would
like to have this widget.

5 votes so far in extras-testing.
Please help us developers to put more apps to extras repository.

Where's the vote link?

extras-testing page

But please, don't vote for applications in extras-testing
just because you like them. Please follow the extras-testing QA checklist.

Thank you

Congratulations!
It is my most used addition to the N900, & will probably save a lot of wear & tear on the screen as a bonus.

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Hi Nicolai,

I saw an upgrade to the switcher in HAM this morning. There was no changelog, but I went ahead anyway.

I didn't see any visible change, except that the desktop icons were reset to the defaults as usual.

Of course it's not a huge hassle to copy custom ones over again, and restart Hildon Home, except that I always forget the directory name between upgrades :-)

Maybe it might be possible to modify your installer, so that it detects an upgrade instead of a fresh install, and doesn't copy the icons if they're already present ?

Hi Nicolai,

I saw that there is a new package called Dock Bar, may be it would be good to be integrated with your desktop switch ?

Have been playing trying to get a sidebar look.
I'm not very artistic, so this is still fairly ordinary, but might inspire someone with flair to have a go.
If anyone is interested:
- the 3 buttons at lower far right of screen 2 are shortcuts to websites
- the G on screen 3 is a General to Silent profile switcher (changes to S when silent)
- the Meegons on screen 4 are direct call buttons to most used contacts

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

I am having huge difficulties moving my custom widgets. I am trying to fit 9 pictures of my desktop to effectively create the homescreen selector effect. However, the spanner and the x take up the whole widget. If I try to move around where the x is usually nothing happens. If I try to move around anywhere else it usually ends up treating it as pressing the spanner and I go into settings. Takes over 5 minutes of trial and error to just be able to move one widget. Doing this 81 times (9 times on each of 9 desktops) would take forever. Any easy fix? Can the spanner and x size be reduced for example?

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Have you tried using the stylus to move the widgets?
It yields much better accuracy than using a finger.

Yes it is the stylus I am using. My finger would not even have a remote chance.

Hola Etuoyo,

I recognize the problem. What I did to easier manoeuvre them around was to first enter the widget's settings and change the width to something more workable, i.e. >100 px. Than I moved them around. Lucky for me I only use four desktops and have integrated them to my wallpaper so precision is no top-priority as they're in visible anyway.

hi
how do we change the default icons, the left, right and all the numbers to suit my theme.

i know the path where the icons are located but how do i change them.

nicolai 2011-03-29 08:45

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Just overwrite the default icons.
You will need to use xterm or filebox with root access.

anismistry 2011-03-29 08:50

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

i dont know the commands in Xterm but i have filebox how can have root access in filebox or is it there by default
thanks Nicolai

Edit: got it, it is in the setting of filebox

nicolai 2011-03-29 08:54

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

No, it is not on by default. You can change this in fileboxs settings.
But be carefull with this.

anismistry 2011-03-29 08:55

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Thanks root access is in the setting of filebox

Hi Nicolai,

Firstly, a big thanks for your desktop switcher widget its really useful for me.

Is there any chance you will update it with the option to customize the colours?

Thanks

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Hello Nicolai,

I have been using your desktop switcher for quite a while and it has become a must-install-application that I dpkg whenever I flash right after installing rootsh and some skins.

I do, however, have a feature request that could make my life easier. Right now, I use an altered background and apply your buttons on top of that, setting transparancy to full and size to 48 px. whenever I do a reflash, right after installing desktop-switcher, I import my settings with gconftool-2 like this:

Code:

gconftool-2 --load /home/user/MyDocs/FreshInstallN900/desktop-switcher.entries
After that, all 12 instances of the buttons (I use the default 4 desktops) are added through the settings "add widget" panel and they show up lovely, on the right place as well. The only thing not being saved in the gconf settings is the size of the icons and their transparency-level.

So, in short, do you think itīs possible to add these two variables to be saved in gconf?

Kind regards,

Anthonie

anthonie 2011-05-17 22:33

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

All these words and than forgetting to mention there is another variable thatīs not stored in gconf backup, the desktop location the button points to.

So, when adding the 12 buttons, I also have to point them to the right desktop because they all go to the desktop on the left.

nicolai 2011-05-18 07:53

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Hi anthonie,

those settings (transparency, size, ...) are saved in the config file
/home/user/.desktop_switcher/config

anthonie 2011-05-18 09:49

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Thanks a lot, Nicolai. with those two combined things are to be restored real quick. _O_

Re: [Announce] desktop switcher widget

Is there any way of configuring / customising / hacking the widget to run a named shell script each time it switches to a desktop - or to have it output a notification via DBUS when it does, so I can do so from dbus-scripts? Reason I ask is that for a long time I've used scripts to downgrade the radio mode to 2G (and set some other optimisations) any time the phone isn't in active use. Upgrading to 3G again when I want is a pain, though, I use the status menu applet, having tried shortcuts on my desktop (works, but launching via hildon is a pain) and automating it based on programs launched (takes effect a couple seconds too late). I've hacked up launcher scripts per applicaton but that's a pain, too.

What I want to do is to use this widget to have a "3G" desktop, where the mere act of switching to it puts the phone into 3G mode while I pick an application from that desktop, and by extension, I'd like to be able to run an arbitrary script upon arrival at any given desktop. In other words to do something like:

[ -f "/etc/desktop-switcher.d/$DESKTOP.sh ] && /bin/sh /etc/desktop-switcher.d/$DESKTOP.sh

Is that possible, or can it easily be hacked into the code?
