With an initrd you can boot with
  • u-boot
  • Kernel + initrd loaded (not flashed) by flasher-3.5
  • kexec (probably not sure)

First initrd images builded.
Unfortunately first boot attempts are unsuccessful because probably there are errors on boot script or on cramfs image.
I will investigate when I will have other time to dedicate

Will this have a password/security code option, so it would ask (optionally if the owner sets it up) password before letting to boot further? Like a GRUB password.

With kexec and flasher-3.5 the answer is NO.
But it is possible to create an initrd that will ask you a password before running the application (three times wrong password = reboot)

With u-boot I think instead that it is possible but I don't know how
