Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
No, nothing should affect battery life while running in Maemo.
After restoring, you will have whatever kernel you had -before- restoring. If this is the same, you're fine. If it's not, and you are restoring a backup with a -different- kernel, you'll have to reinstall the kernel manually. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
ok, thanks
if i have kernel power, i have to reinstall these on the new system? right? i have only to install "backupmenu" via App Manager? or should i download the .deb from your page? the backupmenu package install all depend packages??? ( tar-gnu and i2c-tools ) is something like multiboot necessary? cheers |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
It should install all needed packages. Others, like ssh-server are optional, and it says so in the package config.

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
Is there any reason users shouldn't post and swap backupmenu backup files? It's a lot easier to use them than to go through a normal setup process.
Of course one would have to make sure not to share personal information... |

Wouldn't it take longer to re-set all settings just right than to use an install script? I'm rather sure the list of installed packages can be dumped and passed to apt-get. I think there and app for that.

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
Some programs add things to settings files, to have those installed one would have to restore those files, and, in process, also restore other things. Say, for CSSU to be restored onto a phone, transitions.ini must be packed in, and, thus, the parallax setting would carry over in the pack. I'd have to manually adjust the file.
You said "For example, you could take a newly flashed N900 that has no personal info on it and add the best programs and back it up and post the backup files." I gather that restoring that would restore some if not all the settings (all if BM stays as it is), so I'd have to manually restore (some) settings. OTOH, should I mass-install everything it might be a little longer but it's be automated. |

My example was just to establish beyond a doubt that personal information would not necessarily be compromised -- if there's no personal information on the phone, it won't be passed on, guaranteed. The person I'm imagining who would benefit from the restore backup method of installing would be someone who didn't have many programs installed on the N900 (and thus wouldn't have many personal settings to worry about). Instead of starting with a bare phone and few programs installed, the new user would just install BackupMenu and then the provided backup files -- voila, a fully stocked phone without the long process of discovering programs, etc. I gather this method could also be used to give programs you have to pay for to a new user at no cost, but there are so few pay programs for the N900 and they are so inexpensive that doing so would be both evil and not very useful. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
...And the easier way is to just copy the deb package during the install process.
As far as copying backups between devices goes, technically it should work. You may have to worry about copyright etc. when distributing them, though - Mainly Nokia's closed-source bits. And yes, all settings will be backed up and restored - anything not in the backup will need to be manually restored. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
to my left I was always at 98% with any version of backupmenu v2
it happen to you? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
If it finishes, it's fine. It probaly won't ever "show" 100%, cause it only updates the counter every 5 seconds! And, it's only a rough estimate anyway.

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
ok, so after reading 66 pages of comments i wasn't filled with a warm fuzzy feeling about this utility. against my better judgment i decided to download version 56-1 from the website and it wouldn't even download, so i've now put this utility firmly into the flakey category. i'm happy for the people who have made it work, but it just seems a huge risk at the moment.
i do have one question, has the 'phantom rootfs inefficent compression space gobbler' problem been fixed? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
@leetnoob: All in all, backupmenu is one of the most important utilities for the n900, especially due to the proneness of optfs (at least mine) to corrupt, probably due to OC or a flakey chip.
Backupmenu works a treat imho and saved my *** several times. If you want to spare your rootfs space, just prepare a flashable img with zlib compression out of your latest rootfs tar archive (you must use your n900 to make the ubifs as I reported somewhere in this thread) and flash it to your device. Then, the subsequent times you restore your rootfs with backupmenu, the zlib compression will be retained (I imagine for the files with same name and path). You'll lose zlib compression only if you reflash the stock kernel or someway erase your rootfs. But then, I realised that having so much free space in rootfs is not that fundamental, since the only reason I found abundant free space is needed is installing a firmware update (and pr1.4 won't ever show, most likely). Finally I think that Robbiethe1st fully deserves a donation for his work; much, much more than stupid gamelets that on ovi store are sold at even some euros. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
I have been fully enjoying backup menu however I must ask how does one get ssh over USB or serial console to work?
SSH over USB just says I have supplied the wrong password (which I clearly havnt) Serial console says 'cant find /bin/bash'. What are my options to get an early shell? Is it possible to add a shell option to backup menu? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
i have just my n900 to near perfect settings for me but want to try cssu again. i've backed up using backupmenu, my question is if i install cssu and end up with problems could i just restore my saved backups using backupmenu or would i need to reflash with PC?

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
i'm very new to this and haven't read through the whole thing, so sorry if this has been explained already, but how do i actually restore a backup?
Also, i don't have this installed yet, i just set about downloading it when the 'warning warning warning .... may cause serious permanent hardware damage to the device' etc etc flashed up, which has put me off installing. Is the worst likely to happen, or is it if i mess around with it somehow? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
To restore, fire the n900 with slide open, select the restore option, select the rootfs and optfs files you want to restore, wait, done.
For your second question, no damage on my device. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
likewise. this app was much needed and our prayers were answered.
its very simple, safe and stable to use. youll be glad you did |

yep. V 0.62 is the right one.

and this backs up everything? installed ovi paid apps, angry birds scores etc?
and i assume, from the first post, i should copy mydocs to the pc as a backup as the app doesn't cover that? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
It backs up the rootfs and opt, but not your
I'm not sure about on Windows, as I haven't tested. I think the stock Backup program might do the apps and stuff for you. Try this and see if the relevant files are saved for you: 1. From the app menu start Backup. 2. Do a full backup (or you can miss bookmarks etc, if they aren't of interest to you). 3. Try opening the various backup zip files from filebox, or you can use your PC to browse to it, and see if it has backed up your game save files. |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
What are the risks, specifically, with installing this program for backup? I skimmed through the pages of this thread but still don't know why there is a huge "Warning" prior to installation.
Also, does 'backing up' everything flash your phone when you save the back-up file? How do we get this file from internal storage, say, if the phone is bricked? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
Home is backed up. MyDocs is not.
When you backup MyDocs by copying it elsewhere, don't forget the hidden files: .documents .images .sounds .videos and maybe a bunch of others.שש |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
Actually, when I backed up recently, BackupMenu gave me a corrupted tarball for the first time - with /home apparently missing (but /opt present). Of course, /home was there - the file size alone was testament to that - and I've been able to repair it (though to what extent I'm not sure yet, as my N900 still isn't back from Nokia Care), but be aware that such things can happen.

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
used it now for a month or so, the warnings when installing made me wary but so does reflashing from pc. backupmenu saves a lot of time and stress in my opinion.

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
installed and did a backup, said it went fine. did it to mydocs rather than memory card which is what i thought it did, so moving across currently. For some reason after the backup my memory card was renamed in file manager to 'undefined-emmc-' or somesuch.
Also is anyone able to answer my question in the post above? |
Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
i just got 2 successful backup restore using backupmenu.....its awesome! i dont need a reflash if my n900 goes nuts again!!

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
if the backup saves to mydocs and i move it to memory card, can it restore from the card?

Re: [Announce] BackupMenu V2 - OS backup & restore | New version - Jan 28th(v0.61)
How safe is this thing now? I got a big warning upon installation and so I cancelled it.

i also got a warning or two from loading backupmenu, to creating backups. but i go on...... but for my case restoration of backups goes alright (i saw a phrase saying restore was successful in light green font color). I can use the device....everything was there except for the updated apps and cssu. i just did this when i installed the latest CSSU (14.1). for some reason, hildon-desktop goes nuts and reboots my n900 after killing it on xterm and repeats after every reboot. |
