The Gimp (Image editor)

Would that be possible? I've seen it running on a Sharp Zaurus, which has only 64 mb memory but 400Mhz XScale, so i don't see why it would be too technically impossible to port it over to Maemo.

So why am i not seeing it on the N800 yet?

Is it supposed to be published?!

First off -- I have nothing against the Gimp; why, some of my best friends are gimps, so there.

But -- do we really want, or even need, a full-blown graphics editing suite on the N800? Personally, I would much more like to see something along the lines of ArtRage (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html) ported to or developed for the N800. A good drawing and painting app makes much more sense -- IMHO, that is -- within the framework of the N800.

Well, if we can, why not?

I don't see why we shouldn't port everything over just because we can, and leave it up to the users to decide what they want. It's always great to have lots of options on hands!

Personally, i am rather disappointed when i looked at the software library of N800. It's simply non-existent compared to the huge library of Zaurus software. But i guess the hildonization required, slows down the software porting for N800.

I'm not saying the Gimp shouldn't be ported, but (very timidly) questioning its usefulness on the hardware of the N800.

Re: The Gimp (Image editor)

I compiled the gimp for the n800, runs Ok. But after using it for a while i'm not sure if its the best drawing app for maemo. I did manage to compile another app for the N800 and you can get both the binary and the source (well for gimp also if you want to have a shot at compiling and using it) MTPAINT so far is much better than the gimp. karel jansens think it is what you are looking for also.

Now the other problem i have is...I cannot get this holdonizing thing down at all.
not very good at scripting, or coding, really understanding the danm thing.
I have the working source file for GIMP and MTPAINT, if someone that can hildonize wants to give it a shot...be my guest.

http://maemo(dot)divshare(dot)com/

I Think Neostrider from the #maemo irc channel on the Freenode network might be working more on the Gimp, he was very interested in the source.

anybody that would like to take mtpaint into consideration and hildon it....be my guest also....
or just download the binary(CompileandWorking) run the command chmod +x mtpaint and place it in the /usr/bin/ folder..

Well, i do agree that it might not be that useful on such a small screen or given the limitations of the hardware (very long rendering time perhaps?), but it is one of the most complete drawing software on the Linux afaik.

Given the stylus and touchscreen, i can see great potential for illustration and drawing, infact, even more than using a wacom on a desktop.

I believe if properly hildonzied and tidied up (a simpler and less cluttered menu maybe?), it will be a very good one-size-fits-all software and i really look forward to that.
