Archos 101 - internet tablet
Hey All,
Just been lucky enough to be one of the 10 people to get Archos 101 from Tottenham Court Road, London. Admittedly I bought it for my dad as a birthday gift but if anyone has any queries you'd like to clarify or know then feel free to ask. It comes with android 2.1 pre-installed but it gets a 2.2 update sometime in November. I have to say that I am pretty impressed with it. It responses very well to the touch sensitivity and is quite bright. Plays almost all video formats and has relatively loud sound. My only disappointment in the 2 hours of playing around with it is the accelerometer. It could reposnd much quicker but hopefully it'll be fixed in the 2.2 update :o Cheers, Orion |

This is my first thread, if I've done anything wrong or have ignored something then please be gentle and point me my mistakes and I'll make sure it doesn't happen again.
Thanks Orion |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Pics please, No pic no story.
A detail review would be greatly appreciated, start with out of the box feeling, whats working, whats not, then go with SDcard (Android dead without SDcard :( ), then wifi, connect stability, then market, second finally and the make and break of any gadget, app installation. And ultimately, hack around. Yes, there is quite a lot of work, but, hey, that is what people wants to learn from your purchase. It plays videoes fine. How about streaming video? Install any TV app and look. click on the advertisement, they are a good start to see video streaming, they usually work better then anything else. Stutters, pixelate, smooth, audio/video desync? Form factor, is it alright to carry it around frequently, or just like a netbook, use mainly at home and on the couch :) Battery life too under certain use pattern etc Oh, what is in the box, like any absolutely accessory but Archos what you to pay as options, something like that. bun |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
he he, wohoo my first reply....sorry had to do that
Yes, I'll post some pics tonight, how do i do tht btw? do i just edit my first post? I'll do all the requested tests on it and let you know. Wifi connection's smooth and so i'll try streaming video and check that out for you. It's super thin Bunanson, so thin that it's so cool to hold it. It isn't heavy at all and it has a very sturdy firm stand attached. It's use for my dad to access web and to do his accounting work away from the home desktop and also outside of home. |

Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
My Archos 70 will be coming on Wednesday, maybe I'll put up a review by the end of the week.
The thing I'm disappointed with in Archos is that they didn't state how much RAM both the 70 and the 101 ship with. Also, they state on the website that they come with 2.2... and in the fine print say "available November 12" I'm looking forward to see your review of the 101. Can you poke around and see how much RAM you've got? Because I called Archos, and even the tech support guys couldn't confirm whether or not the 70 came with 256mb or 512mb RAM. Makes me nervous... |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
the one thing i want to know is if the 101 come with a pdf reader installed, and if so can it handle a a4 or letter sized sheet with some degree of readability in portrait.

Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
@ orion88freedom
Could you possible pull up 'top' in the terminal and see how much RAM your 101 has? Much appreciated. |

i'm afraid I'm not that advanced to be able to pull ram info from "top" in "terminal" for archos 101. But I can confirm that it has 256 mb ram as it was listed in the paperwork that I got from the shop where I got archos 101. |

oh, and how many fingers can the screen tell apart? can you for instance type with a all ten if the 101 have the stand in the low angle setting? |

The office pack's free version is even slower to be honest. Unless you can install the android market's apk I don't think you'll have much success with pdf viewers. The screen can't differentiate much fingers. Definitely not all 8 fingers and 2 thumbs. The maximum I've managed to work with it is 1 thumb and 2 fingers :) |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
bah, making the lower angle option for the stand virtually pointless. Damn it archos!
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Yeah, I just got my Archos 70 and it's got 256mb RAM.... dissapointing. But it's still a nice/cheapo tablet to mess around with

Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Updated the Archos 101 with Froyo and sideloaded the android market....got the flash player from there and the rest of the goodies like the angry birds and even the seasons edition....all looking GOOD !!!

Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Give us a review! What's the screen like? What's the battery life like?
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Whats like when carry in your hand? My 7" a81e is slightly too big.
I bumped into someone using a Motorola Droid X (thats what he told me), it has a 4.3" screen and just like our N810, has g sensor/gps/2.2 and is very very responsive. 2yr contract +$150. bun |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Well let me give you a brief review dear sirs.
The battery life is pretty amazing I have to say. It lasts for ages. I can easily get 8 to 9 hours with 75% brightness and 75% volume and no sounds or vibrations when touching on screen. I initially struggled so much with the screen responsiveness purely because I was thinking in my head that it's an Archos 101 but trying to use it like a N900...lol. So I pressing hard on the screen for the icons to move but i struggled. Later I found out that all I needed was to move across on the screen with "feather" touch and the responsiveness is BRILLIANT. The screen is slightly glossy but I've seen somewhere in the archos fan's forum links to purchasing a protective film which reduces the gloss but does not reduce the sensitivity or brightness of the screen. Sideloading the android market on to it is a breeze...very easy and quick. Oh you guys have to see the angry birds on this 10" screen. It's a beauty. I was jumping up and down like a 5 yr boy who just received a ps3.....ok well maybe not that much. But honestly, it's VERY VERY GOOD. My disappointment was when the flash was installed (which doesnt come with the froyo update due to some agreement lacking between archos n adobe) the vids on youtube were quite choppy. I wouldn't go check youtube vids on this yet. I'm waiting for a proper flash release for this to see any good difference in the vids. But all other flash positives and capabilities are there. I've not tried the facebook vids yet...but will check that too. I've not junked out the archos with loads and loads of apps but i read on the archos fans forums that there's a limit on archos to install apps just like the n900....this is another disappointment. But all the positives outweight the negatives....I like it !!! |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
So what do you all think about my mini review? Is it helpful? I would like to know what other details you guys would like to know. I am new to all this reviewing and testing stuff. But it makes me so hyper. Lol
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
My only wish is that they increase the RAM and the space available for installing apps.
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Thanks for the review! It sounds like a great system, especially considering the price!
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Oh yeah, I agree. For that price with all of these goodies, we can't really complain. It may seem a lil slower after 2.2 but in fact it isn't....my dad's happy with it now, he gets to access all the functions that required flash...
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
How was the accelerometer response after the 2.2 update?
|
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
Oh surprisingly it's better in terms of response....took me by surprise....

GPS? I am jealous, totally jealous on your battery. Mine wont even last 3 - 4 hrs. Forget it. I got a81e. I think I love the Droid X, with HDMI output and HD video recording, but the cost is too deep, $599.00 US. Thanks for the minireview. And glad you enjoy your toy. bun |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
i bought one of these tabs back in nov for a xmas gift.
it all seems ok. but ill have to send ours back as the speakers seem to have blown. all i can here is very distorted sound. and the thind has not even played anything. it barly gets used for anything other than web browsing. so im fairly gutted about that. has anyone had any luck using the 101 as a phone by tethering it to a n900. i cant seem to get mine to even connect. also. i have had no luck finding the n900 mobile hotspot usin the 101 i may have a play with it today. |
Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
There's been another firmware over the Xmas holidays that I received. All it seems to have done is make the archos slightly more bearable in terms of general performance and use. No other noticeable change. But makes it a heck lot more bearable. Battery usage seems to have decreased. Went from 88% to 41% after a good use of WIFI powered browsing for a good 3 or more hours. Does that sound reasonable to you guys?

Re: Archos 101 - internet tablet
There is obviously a bug in sleeping-mode which can drain the battery. I've started to disable wlan before sending the device to sleep.
Besides that I can't complain about battery life of my archos 70. |
