N800 - Austin Texas

If anyone is up for it... I was looking for local modile users in the Austin area to possibly develop with or just shoot the $h*t with modile devices. Just reply to this post, I should have a local site up by Friday, basically storing some of my projects and hopefully some additional devs too. Maybe User Group or sumthin.

I'm in Austin and using a 770 that I've had for a year or so. I'm not sure I would be able to add much on the technical side, but I be interested.

I live in Washington State but will be in Austin June 9 -16 teaching seminars at UT Informal Classes. Not a programmer, but now crazy about the n800. I'd be happy to meet up during that week.

San Antonio here...I'm not a huge Linux guru, but would be interested in seeing what others are running on their N800's (or 770's)...

I have plenty of excuses to drive to Austin, this would be one more :-)

I was wrong-- it's June 23 through 25, sorry. I'll bring faceplates! ;)

I'll be in Finland just before that-- my first trip over the Atlantic! Hoo boy.

Sounds good serial. I sent you and Tex a PM. Im also about to flip a lid.. just saw a guy here at extreme pizza using a USB gender changer with a wireless mouse on the N800. @ss told me it was a secret he wouldnt give up. OMW to FRYZ to buy a changer... Im determined to win in DOOM.

Texrat 2007-05-29 21:35

Re: N800 - Austin Texas

Haven't received a pm yet, negen. Still writing? ;)

The mouse deal sounds interesting-- let us all know if you crack it!

As for a user group, I reserved http://ldug.org for an international one. I launched a site to guage interest and it's been idle for a few weeks as I determine the next step. In all likelihood I will need to pass off some of the work to someone else with more time; my career just heated up big time. No matter what though I intend to support what I started, one way or another... including support for local chapters if the thing gets rolling.

Yes... unfortunately. :D

To earn some necessary cred, though, it really needs to be hosted on a Linux server. I may move it to one soon.

Tex... Honestly IMO if the site is well driven, and effective... any community should respect the languages it is written in. I am not affraid to say that I am a very good(paid) .net dev with a strong knowledge of MSSQL as a backend. So in other words if we can make a strong data driven site using .net... lets go with it if the host is cheap.

I'm a decent .net developer myself although more experienced with SQL Server.

While I appreciate your input, I feel very strongly about this. One of the main drivers behind my taking out the domain was (besides meetups) the desire to support the growth of linux-based devices. Running the global user group web page on anything other than Linux would be, in my humble opinion, a tacit admission of failure-- especially if the platform was owned by the one organization dedicated to stamping out Linux. ;)

Don't get me wrong-- I've been a Microsoft developer for over 20 years and Partner for over 5 now, so it isn't an anti-MS thing... but I believe in internal consistency, and in this regard, any user group should eat, breathe and bleed its own credo. If for no other reason, running the group site on any other platform opens the group to unnecessary and counterproductive criticism, if not eventual in-fighting. Best to avoid all that.

Re: N800 - Austin Texas

Greetings all!

I was delighted to see this thread. I am an Austinite and also crazy about my N800. I am not a developer and know nothing about Linux, but the one thing that really 'sold' me on the N800 was the idea that I could really customize my toy.

Of course, easier said than done, but it is doable and to those who complain of the difficulties, I need only remind them that we have come a long way.

Now, I KNOW the N800 is going to be replaced (and soon, no doubt) with something even more refined, but for now, this is the most delightful little sandbox to play I could have ever imagined all those years ago reading science fiction!

I'd love to get together here in ATX with like-minded folks. We might even test the toys somewhere over a beer:)

I am a webmaster at the u of t, so a lot of my take has to do with the usability of web apps for small devices.

If you are planning a meet, please let me know!

Cheers,

Phillip

Re: N800 - Austin Texas

I doubt the N800 will be replaced quite as quickly as it did the 770... but yeah, there will hopefully be a follow-up. That depends on the success of the N800 of course.

As I noted in a previous post, I'll try to remember to bring some N800 faceplates with me when I come down. If I have time between traveling, training, and other new job activities I'll paint up a few too.

(oh, and GreyGhost: I'm writing a novel in which UT figures prominently-- you may be able to help me there)

Everything is still alive SeRi@lDiE, just the corp dog leash attached to my hip wont give me time to breath or communicate often. What are the exact dates everyone will be here, or be open?

Re: N800 - Austin Texas

I'm still here...I will have some time this coming Sunday evening, say 6 to 8 or 9. Perhaps we could all meet for a beer somewhere. I'll happily suggest places if y'all would like and/or meet at most any place. I'm in South Austin, so I'd prefer south/central.

Cheers!

Did anything go down yet with the sort-of-planned Austin GTG?

If everyone decides on a date, time and place, I can drive up and bring my mobile WiFi router...then we can all have net access wherever we decide to meet up. And I won't even charge for access :D

I'm near 183/Mopac. If someone wants to nominate a time I can actually make, we could chat. Maybe someone can work out why I can't get the radio app to appear on my home or my menus... :-)

Ah well, it's Monday am and I've just picked up here...I would be happy to meet this evening, somewhere in the University/downtown area, say around 6-8pm for beer/coffee. I can suggest places or will meet if you have a place in mind.

Interested? Please email me (phillip.dubov@gamil.com) if you want to get together (I have to work today, so this forum isn't the best way for me to communicate:) and we'll see what we can work out!

Peace!
