Ocosmos Ocs1

Well here is a really nice UMPC running Windows 7 and the new Intel Atom Oaktrail platform. Here is nice demonstration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRTtm9iGihc
The product hasn't hit the market yet because the Oaktrail processor hasn't been released. I am actually very happy to see more UMPCs because honestly I don't like the limitations and locked down nature of smartphones. Ram is unknown and pricing is unknown, but I here that something like this could potentially be 400-500 dollars. The specs are pretty crazy also. This is also being advertised as a gaming device it has two dpad mouse controllers and two shoulder buttons.
Operating System: Windows 7 Starter Edition
Screen: 4.8 inch 1024x600 capacitive touchscreen
Storage: 32gb ssd
Processor: 1.5ghz oaktrail
GPU: Intel GMA 600
Connectivity: Full size USB 2.0, Mini USB, Microhdmi, Wifi 802.11b/g/n, Microsd, and GPS
Camera: 1.3mp camera on the front and 3.0mp camera
The device seems really cool but I think it has two flaws it uses capacitive touchscreen, which doesn't work well with a Desktop PC OS and it doesn't seem to have that great of a keyboard, but everything else seems great. I also canceled my order on an Archos 43 because Archos seems to be pulling some bs with the ordering. I will be in the market for a UMPC soon, so this might be it. I think Ocosmos stumbled upon a device that is a Nokia n810, Nokia n800, Nokia n900, Viliv n5/s5, Openpandora, Archos 5, and Dell Streak killer all rolled up into one device. I personally would want to run Ubuntu or Meego on this.

I found out the oaktrail processor is only 32nm compared to the 45nm of previous Atom processors, so that should mean much better battery life. The Viliv n5 was already able to around 4-6 hours of battery. This thing could get 8-10 hours of battery life if proper hardware optimizations are done. I never liked smartphones for there limitations and this could be the solution to that. Of course you can already get good UMPC's from Viliv for around the same price as a smartphone. I'm digging the form factor a lot.

The screen size is just right, but the device itself is huge. Also, the GMA 600 is another PowerVR chip so running a sane OS on this will be tricky.

Well yah that can be a problem, however there were drivers for the GMA 500 working. There is support for the GMA 500 available https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...oCardsPoulsbo/
So we will see about the about GMA 600.

Re: Ocosmos Ocs1

I think my n810 replacement has arrived. The only deal breaker for me would be the capacitive screen, well the device only a prototype so that might change before oaktrail is released.

We need to get MeeGo running on this, I don't know why but everything must run MeeGo!

i considered getting the Viliv n5 http://www.dynamism.com/viliv-n5.shtml, PsiXpda http://www.psixpda.com/ and the Umid M1 http://www.dynamism.com/notebooks/umid-mbook-m1.shtml, but I think it will be worth the wait for this baby.

I hope to see more UMPC's when oaktrail arrives. I also like how this thing has a keyboard too. Here is a funny video of the folks at Ocosmos smashing an iPad for some reason it is a hilarious video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkOlDbmvUxw

I found out a few more details from engadget http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/o...h-gaming-hand/
The handheld can have up to 64gb of storage and 2gb of ram. Pretty cool I'm loving this thing every time I here more about it.

RRM, the unit looks nice and I appreciate the youtube narrator's comments on the keyboard. But the problems are -- Windows (need I say more?), no price mentioned (a common irritation with early news items), not available until summer 2011 (I'll bet by then there will be a lot more options to drown this one out).

When more info surfaces, maybe it could be my dream PC replacement in handheld form factor, but for now I think I will continue to drool over the Galaxy Tab (and more realistically set my sights on an Archos).

Unknown pricing and release date suck, but you can't release the price or the release date when the processor powering your product isn't on the market. As for Windows just install some Linux distro and your not limited to what the software experience the company gives you unlike smartphones where manufacturers have complete control over the user experience. I myself would want Ubuntu something like this, thus I shall install because I have th choice and flexibility.
