Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
That's correct; USB wiring is is black ground, red positive, green/white data +ve/-ve (see my pictures on the previous page).
Aside from hen/the bme being set up correctly to accept charging during host mode, is it really that simple to splice in a power supply? I assume that'd be a dumb male USB port? |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
You don't usually want to mess with splicing USB cables. Data transfer might be messed up when the cable's shielding and parallel wires have a break - especially in highspeed mode.
instead you can use commercially available adapters, as they ship with a lot of peripherals, especially HDDs but also other power greedy stuff. Similar to this: http://media.share.ovi.com/m1/s/2667...690eda6846.jpg The silver-transparent adapter came with the white 3G-Dongle. It is a USB-AM<->USB-AF extension with a branch to an auxiliary 2nd USB-AM from the first one. The 2nd plug is only for powering VBUS, and is supposed to get plugged into a second host port to supply the 3G stick with an additional 500mA. Here it's plugged to a USB wallwart charger, thus powering both ends of the whole cable nest with 5V. You can use such a setup right now for powering the peripheral so N900 doesn't have to provide the current - just plug in the N900 side of cable immediately after you clicked "VBUS boost on" in h-e-n GUI. The N900 will not mind any external supply supporting the internal 5V booster. see http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...203#post921203 for powering the N900 while in hostmode. cheers jOERG |
patch for mount.sh
- list=`awk '$4~"[0-9]$"{print $4}' /proc/partitions | grep -v "mmcblk*" | grep -v "loop*"`
+ list=`awk '$3~"[0-9]$"{print $4}' /proc/partitions | grep -v "mmcblk*" | grep -v "loop*"` original awk line will not enumerate patitions without numbers in name of part. this minor change made script search criteria #blocks not name&number and will mount partitions ( as expected ) without number in partition name like "sda" |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
hello , pendrive , mouse or keyboard run well in my n900 but
i bought this usb hub http://www.soyntec.com/us-en/item/nexoos_395_black and i tried and tried with charger o without charger and only with one thing , for example only hub+mouse or only hub+keyboard and nothing , and well?? i saw a quake 2 video in youtube with hub with mouse and keyboard . if my mouse and my keyboard run well in hen without hub , only one conected and my mouse and my keyboard normally are using with low speed mode , it is more compatibility in theory why with hub are not running , ??? any idea?? thanks for hen |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
hi samipower,
try to enumerate hub first (using highspeed, hubs convert speed for e.g mouse etc). Check in dmesg and lsusb if everything went fine. Then plug in mouse and keyboard. Happy new year! cheers jOERG |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
now all well
1- hen high speed mode 2- vboost 3- conect hub usb and click enumerate 4- conect keyboard in hub and clik enumerate and keyboard run well 5- conect mouse and without enumerate. only connect , mouse move point cursor well. hub now are running with keyboard+mouse very well aah without hub charger , only with n900 energy power mouse have 5v and 100ma ,keyboard i dont know but the tho things are running with n900 energy power and very happy new year to all world |

hi guys.
wishing you all a very happy new year. I tried a usb light and it worked. just connect in any speed and press Vbus and you are on. Good luck. thanks. http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/...ent-1M42OV.jpg |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Just here to confirm it works on my N900.
PR1.2 Kernel Power v46 I'll take a picture of it later. This is incredible, you guys. I've never seen such streamlined and sophisticated homebrew before. All it took to connect a flash drive, were about 4 ticks of the stylus. |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Should I update my Nokia N900 to version 1.3 ?
|
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
IIRC, joerg_rw is on PR1.1.1 or PR1.2, so nope, you don't have to update :)

Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
I tried the host mode but the hostmode gui fails to mount the device (if I mount it by hand
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/flash all is good, but neither the mount nor the unmount button work on the hostmode-gui app. the kernel messages show nothing about mounting procedures. I suspect it is because when I run the app from the menu it does not have priviliges to mount it. ________ WEB SHOWS |

USB host mode breaks after transmitting lots of data
I took my N900 with me to my skying holiday as an "offload device" for my photos, when the card of my camera would fill up.
This is the first time where I really "stressed out" USB host-mode. The first day, I had around 100 Megs of photos to transfer (using gphoto), and midway through the transfer, the phone suddenly became very slow, until the transfer broke up. I rebooted, and continued (with a USB card reader that I had with me, fortunately). Eventually, the same thing happened (slower, and slower transfer). Eventually, the light on the card reader went off, just as if VBUS power had been cut (but this was not the case). After quitting and relaunching h-e-n, and removing zero-sized files, I could finish the copy. The other days, I already started with the card reader, but same thing kept happening, as long as there was a big enough amount of photos. It looks as if there might be some resource (memory buffer?) starvation issue. Any ideas? Thanks, Alain |
Re: USB host mode breaks after transmitting lots of data
A known flaw/bug of maemo. Probably related to swap usage. You run into it as well when copying from uSD to eMMC, no matter if via cp in xterm or via USB mass storage mode and desktop PC.
Somebody suggested rsync with bandwidth limit, another suggestion is to reduce swappiness (see swapolube ?) Anyway I am glad to say it's for sure unrelated to h-e-n cheers jOERG |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
What does "unable to connect, no file system available" mean? I've managed to succesfully mount a card reader once but it didn't stay connected for long. Now i just get that message. Whats the deal my friends?

Mechanically - it's discouraged to use this type of rigid adapters. Very risky for your N900's USB receptacle. You heard they come off easily, didn't you? /j |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
For me the wired stuff appears more dangerous. But I guess it depends on the user. Sitting on the charger cable and then making rapid movements for instance :D

Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release

However... is this actually true? Has anybody used such adapters and can contribute any "war stories"? Because they do look convenient: a lot less cabling lying around on the desk, and lots less to take with you when traveling. Maybe a good compromise would be a Micro-USB-to-A adapter which has a short (just 2-3 centimenters) length of flexible cable between both ends. That would be almost as compact as this one, yet still flexible enough to cancel that evil USB-Port eating leverage. Does anybody know whether such a beast exist, and, if so, where to find it? |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
check the threads related to USB. There are all sorts of adapters mentioned, also a short CA-101.
And then there's the N8 OTG adapter that you can file to shape. If somebody would post a collection of stable links to all the posts about adapters, that would probably be appreciated by a lot of users. /j |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
I have words hyperlinked in post #1, best solution in my opinion is the Nokia CA-101D (101D = short, 101 = stock) and a female-female adapter.
|
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Quote:
http://i51.tinypic.com/3588jzd.jpg From top to bottom: 1) CA167 + female-to-female USB adapter 2) CA101D + female-to-female USB adapter 3) CA157 + micro-AB female to micro-B male USB adapter (alternative to filing corners) 4) female to micro-B male USB adapter The only place I could find a "micro-AB female to micro-B male USB adapter" was on ebay so this is a bit more expensive than the other options (although I found one at CPC/Farnell afterwards). I prefer to use cable (4) as this is the most direct one which I bought (also from ebay) thanks to iDont's post #399 in this thread. Edit: obviously if you use cable (3) with the adapter then you must always keep the adapter and cable connected together when using with an N900 otherwise you could stress the port as has been stated on numerous occasions in posts about the N900's usb port. |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release

If you want proof then how much money are you willing to contribute to buying enough N900s to doing a statistically valid study on this? (the money going to buy all the N900s needed for the study) Because without a proper study, all we have to go on is educated guesses based on fairly simple physics knowledge of how levers work. Anecdotes, no matter how many of them you have, never add up to statistically valid data, but if you want a vaguely related one, I have a 3G USB dongle for my netbook, this had no cable so just stuck out of the port putting strain on its connector it broke several times in the 18 months I was using it, fortunately it was easy to fix, but it kept happening, until I got fed up and stuck a short USB cable on it, bear in mind when reading this that the connector on the USB dongle should be stronger than the USB port on the N900. Now we know the N900s USB port is prone to breaking, the question is are you really prepared to risk yours for a little convenience? |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Quote:
My 'war stories' amount to: I'm careful with my port, if I REALLY believe it's in danger, I have a usb-male-to-usb-female cord I can use to extend the reach from the little adapter, so that the bulk of the weight rest s elsewhere. Just remember you're working with a pretty strong lever. Keep that in mind, and be careful, and the risk of your ripping your port out isn't that bad. On the other hand, it depends on how careful you are, how prone you are to accidentally doing things that you'd define as clumsy, that might result in you hitting whatever you've got plugged in. What I do, is when I hold the N900, I thread whatever I have plugged in between my fingers of the hand on the side it's plugged in to. So my hand takes the weight of whatever's plugged in to the port through the adapter, by letting the adapter rest in it. I would not stick a usb stick and leave it just supported by the port through the adapter, if you get that kind. If you do though, it's really not that bad so long as you don't do it constantly, don't jerk your N900 around sharply, etc. But I wouldn't push it just to verify that, because you never know if your port happens to be having a weak moment. I say, the main deciding factor is, how confident are you, knowing your dexterity, as much of the laws of physics as you know, and generally your own carefulness and physical competence at controlling and being mindful of your body, that you won't end up accidentally pressing the very tip of some USB stick, or leave the entire contraption supported by just the port on the N900? No one can really answer that for you. I got this usb adapter, I'm happy with it because it's small enough that I can easily stick it in my pocket without any folding/twisting of wires, and it's fine for what I use it for (IE, I don't need to be running around with USB dongles attached to my N900). I'm careful enough and trust myself enough that I can say that for my use cases, I'm not really taking any more of a risk with it than I would be with a longer cord adapter. |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Well, just to be careful, I got this puppy for just 2.92:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=230571682098 A tad longer than I had hoped for, but still more convenient than the extra long cable that shipped with the N900 combined with a female-A-to-female-A adapter that I bought at Conrad's. |

On a side note: Has anyone ever seen any microUSB plugs suitable for use with mylar cable? All I can find are cable-based connectors and 90° angle via or surface mount parts. The cable ones are nice, but are far longer than they need to be to compensate for the plastic casing. My idea would be to make a mylar ribbon based USB extension cable that I could run UNDER my case and out a slit on the side. If done properly it could lead to a docking station like thing, or a magnetic plug like the mac power cords... could be nice, if I could just find a supply for the connectors. |
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
The two data wires are a twisted pair, and the four together are shielded, so it's basiaclly going to have to be cylindrical AFAIK.
|
Re: [Announce] USB hostmode beta release
Quote:
It's not like twisted pair is mandatory for USB, it's just a means to achieve a certain electrical property. There are other means to achieve the same. On PCBs for example you are doing this all the time: differential signals need parallel traces (you hardly can twist them ;-D ), and shielding can be done by placing these parallel traces between two layers of ground plane, and running a ground trace in parallel to left and right of the diff pair on same plane. /j |
