Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
...........this is normal behavior, you get the sounds + low battery warning, thats why i made the LED notify, also i have disabled my battery icon in the top, this also takes out most of the BME, i don't get any sounds or warnings when i connect via USB, only the option for connection, and i also don't get any sounds or warnings when the battery gets low.
And jedi and vi_ + you please stop getting in a fight in my thread, it is clogged enough as it is. |

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
hello. i have a nokia battery. i think its genuine got it from a mobile shop like 2 months back. used it 2 days then switched to the battery that came in the box. now i used it again. it worked for 12 hours nice and showed a 55 percent charge remaning. but then all of a sudden the bar turned red and its shut off. your widget was also showing -0.6 percent and then it died. im charging it back up. is this like a problem with the battery? or is it just the charge cycle? will it be normal once i charge and drain it full a couple of times?thanks

sometimes when charging my phone with normal battery, my battery graph shows the charge line flat. like its going up and at a point its flat line then after a while like it shows 30 min it goes back up. its like my phone is not charging when its a flat horizontal line? and then charges back when it shows going up?

echo "blacklist bq27x00_battery" >>/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist patched version of this module found in kp47 is 1005 confirmed to NOT work properly, due to its tendency to exclusively occupying i2c, causing charging instabilities/ wrong charging calibration etc. If that is the case,m blacklist will fix it (battery may need to be charged few time to get proper calibration), then just go to kernel-power v 47 thread and buggy pali about removing new bq, cause he seems to deny accepting facts about it being broken (module, not Pali). In other case, i would check if cable/charger isn't damaged ;) No battery should perform like that, be it fake or not - even really "disturbed"* ones don't drop from 50% to 0% *By disturbed, i got a side-story to tell - before arrival of my scuds, i was disassembling some old samsung li-ion batteries to use them as replacement for my Son's toys (instead of using 3x coin-size batteries, that provide 3V-4,5V, cost much and last short - i modify every toy with putting old phone battery inside, and charging port somewhere). Unfortunately, i screwed taking apart protection PCB part - accidentally crossed battery + and - for a quite long time, until "smoke" started to fly from battery, and i was able to smell lithium. I was my first attempt @ disassembling Li-Ion battery ever, and it's design was far from BL-5J ones described with photo-details by fr_frost, so i thought that just teared part of it's metal case (pcb was inside plastic, that was glued extremely hard to battery itself). Because battery was REALLY hot, i just dropped it into nearby pot with crushed ice (to cool it down - prepared that before starting disassembling, in case oh temperature problems), and when was sure that no lithium is leaking, sealed the pot. I was sure that battery was totally screwed at this point, and I was really tired (about 3 AM o'clock), so went to sleep. Next day morning, battery was swimming happily in pot of water. Further examination revealed that metal case was NOT damaged - just safety thing released Lithium, when internal pressure started getting high (i think that implementing this pressure-safety things made Li-Ion batteries less likely to explode, hitting everything around with teared sharp metal parts). So, literally battery just lost some of it capacity (and, ended up being about 1/4 thicker than before, cause still some expanded lithium was inside, just with too low pressure to open pressure-safety "system"). After all, I use this battery as 3x coin batteries replacement happily for quite long time, and its performing perfectly. Internal resistance didn't increased, turned out to be water-proof (at least during night time storage in pot of water ;) ), temperature and voltages as normal... Conclusion - I can't imagine how someone was able to "screw" battery during modding process (without literally cutting battery into 2 pieces, injuring himself and nearby people by expanding Lithium explosion), or how Li-Ion battery can be so damaged that it's capacity drop from 50% to 0%. Like dr_frost I'm waiting for HtheB story - maybe it will warn other people from repeating same mistakes? Or We'll be able to help/advice something? |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
Pisen and SUCD is famous brands in China, so the test result is just reasonable.
And for Pisen BL-5J, it is marked 1280mAH here in China. Thanks for the testing. |

If the capacity reported by battery through BSI pin is much different from its actuak capacity, and/or its capacity is significantly lower than original BL-5J, the bme battery meter will get confused and exhibit erratic behaviour.

About that little candle war here (because such a low and pathetic thing can't be even called flamewar) - guys, please, learn to use PM's. dr_frost already asked to stop fighting here, but even if he wouldn't - do You REALLY think that anyone except You want to go through this sh*t?
--- As for destructive vs non-destructive, soldering when done carefully, with overall brain usage and/or direct cooling battery itself with bag of crushed ice (or whatever cold) should be pretty straightforward. Of course, If you don't feel comfortable with soldering iron overall, it's better to use soldering wire - but i wonder if resistance due to risk of bad contact isn't real threat here. Of course, battery itself also isn't soldered to N900 pins ;), so it's no problem if You're REALLY sure that soldering wire connect battery terminals very thigh, even when You shake phone, etc. Side note - if you got only low-power electrical soldering iron (~30 W) using bad of ice around battery may cool everything, including flat cable You want to solder, too much. I use butan powered handheld soldering device, so I was able to finally solder cable to battery surface itself (on one of my batteries, flat wires just crushed and fall apart) doing it in "ice cloak", but for normal purposes better idea may be to "form" cable into flat connector, then tape it to battery using very elastic isolating tape. If You do it right, pulling tape very hard during "circles" around battery, your "connector" will stick so hard to battery surface, that it won't move even during heavy shaking. Also tested this - using proper layers of isolating, You can not only "connect" cable to battery "+" (which is literally 99% of battery metal case surface), but also to small part that is "-". But if that is the case, do it REALLY careful - you must be 100% sure that You covered all "+" surface with isolating tape, leaving exposed only small part (~ millimeter) of "-". Accomplished this with my 1st li-ion "toy battery" and works like a charm - even when connectors are not soldered, just "sticked" to surface, resistance is about 0,1 ohm. Anyway, I'm still waiting to see how disassembling of SCUD went wrong. Just curious. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
yea but if he screwed up 2 batteries already, chances are like me he is not a person with soldering experience (probably wont know the wattage of his soldeirng iron like me or the different types of solder/flux etc....)
non destructive is best - it has worked well for me and I can separate the batteries to use 1 at a time if I want the slimmer n900 profile |

I ve almost one week that my N900 is using the scud battery. I noticed a big difference, maybe 20% plus lifetime, considering that my stock nokia battery is over 1,5 year old.
Thank you dr_frost_dk. Great job:) |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
if you are still looking at batteries to test, I would be interested to see the testing of these guys:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2X-BL-5J-...item35aa7637ef I bought these and have them in a dual-battery. Apparent rating of 1320mah, on the metal of the battery cell it says 1200mah. But I also have dual-japods (the 1350mah), and it may be placebo, but the 1200mah's in dual seem to last longer than the japods in dual. And considering that deal comes with a desktop charger too, its not a bad value proposition. |

This is another feature we wanted so much next to hotswapping on high load - the only 1 drawback is that You cant do it with normal 5V charger, You must have one dedicated for Li-Ions. Carrying around massive RC charger might be not best idea, but modifying quasi-AA size Li-ION charger to charge our battery definitely IS both cheap and effective. You can not even merge it with car charger - i plan to do it just soldering cable and plug that i have lying around. In fact, at this point You can stop carrying N900 stock charger, unless You modify it and use as lightweight, high-efficiency power source for powered Hub and HEN - like i did. |

Have been through this many times, the 5800XL wont work in our N900 because the pins are facing the wrong way. Only way to use that battery is to mod it, but then you can just as well build a dual battery. Goto to the Q&A, don't post "why" just check it out. |

If your dual japod is worse then there is something wrong with the setup or you have gotten some fake japods.... Future tests are targeted at battery's that has the same capacity as scud or in that area. I can test those battery's if you "donate" them or something, PM for more info |

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
Info for everyone that may be interested in buying mugen covers - the're out of stock now, so every order is delaying HUGE amount of time. I ordered mine and payed 09.05.11 - they still don't even start to package my shipment... Also, their info suxx. They told me that they can't ship it to me right now on 18.05.11, only after i asked them why order status is still "Processing" (like when Your payment is just made) - if not for my question, i would be still waiting and wondering why the duck status doesn't change.
I think i don't need to mention that this "company" pissed me really off and i hope for some homebrew (orvjust from more reliable source) replacement for mugen covers... Sorry, putting second battery outside cover and loosing ability to hotswap microSD cards is not for me. In fact i thought about homebrew big cover from stainless steel (i got huge amount from disassembled microwave ovens lying around) before i ordered mugen, but i get no idea how to make good "clickers". If anyone have idea, I'll be most happy to kick mugen @ *** and make better cover myself. // Edit I also thought about cannibalize normal N900 backcover just for clickers, but thats is definitely NOT cost-effective... // Edit Finally, after i pushed them little further, they shipped my cover today... But, I think that chances that they're out of stock now again are pretty high ;) |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
Hello guys,
first thanks to all the people that helped in doing this beautiful modding, without it the N900 can't unleash all his power. After extensive reading of this thread, i've got my dual scud (the blue one) from Lucia Lui and the Mugen XL cover. I used electristan's method, because with copper wire i can supply more charge power, since i'm using the 1200mAh charger provided by Nokia. The battery seems to fit very well, hold in place, the cover closed up without problem. I've installed the Queen Beacon scripts made by dr_frost_dk, because, from what i understand, the battery reading from the system is not correct, since it stick at 1320mAh as top charge level. As pointed in some post, i've removed and blacklisted the module bq27x00_battery. Now i've some question: 1) This night i've charged the phone for about 9hrs, this morning the battery led was green, so i detached the phone from battery charger. The strange thing is that the QBW show me a 80% charge. Is it normal at the first charge? 2) How i can know that i'm using the dual battery? The contact seems correct, but there's a way to prove that the two battery are in parallel? Since my previous battery was 1,5 years old, a single Scud will give a benefit, so i need to know if i'm using really the two battery. 3) Since the stock battery icon in status area is useles, how i can remove it? Thanks in advance. Regards. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
Try to do one more recharge and see if it reaches over 80%, just do it when needed. If it cannot get past 80% then there could be a "loose" connection between your battery's, thats why i made my mod like i did, to avoid any connection problems.
I cannot remember where i removed/moved the file that shuts off the battery icon, but it is nice not to have it, it also removes all the "alarms" and other ignoring noises NOTE: i will be making a video in the next couple of days on how to make the dual battery like i did. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
I will try it in this night charge, tomorrow i will send a report.
So far seems that the phone used 10% of the battery, is at 70%, with: 1) 3G connection always on with mail check every 30 minutes 2) 30 minutes of skype/gtalk online 3) 1 hour of bluetooth on with headphone connected 4) 30 minutes of web browsing 5) 10 minutes of phone talk. I'm using power kernel v47, with smartflex on, ulv profile, 125-805 mhz, treshold 90, powersave bias 20. EDIT: Remove Vanilla Battery Icon from Status Area and Status Menu Credits to: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=66251 1) Open X-Terminal 2) sudo mv /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/status-area-applet-battery.desktop /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/status-area-applet-battery.backup Done. Reverse the command for having it again. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!)
There is also an app for rapid disabling/enabling of the status area widgets, should be "powatool" if I remember correctly.

In the chapter 2 there's a list of material, i compared the Tin with the Copper, and seems that the Copper has much lower resistivity than Tin (soldering wire): 1.68×10^-8 vs 1.09×10^-7 ohm metre. I take this information as is, i don't have an idea how this behavior will apply in our real case, real misuration etc, i used the simple principle low resistivity = better ;) Probabily, considered how short are the plug cable, you are right in saying that there's no real world difference. So, considering this, yesterday the phone last from 2.30 a.m. (when the phone begin to discharge when unplugged) to 9 p.m. around 19 hours, with 1) 3G connection always on with mail check every 30 minutes 2) 120 minutes of skype/gtalk online 3) 90 minutes of bluetooth on with headphone connected 4) 45 minutes of web browsing 5) 30 minutes of phone talk. 6) 40 minutes of gpodder audio streaming 7) 60 minutes with pedometer widget on (used during my daily jogging) What do you think about this duration? EDIT: I'm getting confused. Today i charged the phone through USB, after 2 hrs the QBW indicate 90 perc, then in the next 2 hrs it go to 95, with charging led still active. I unplugged the charge, made 20 mins of phone call and the perc go down to 75. So i disassembled the two battery and put one at time to see the charge. One was at 75 the other at 50, this should not possible if they are connected. So seems that the phone was using only one battery, but this not explain the longer charge period. Anyway i remade the connection with soldering wire that is more flexible and adaptable, switch on the phone and the charge say 65, that is the average of the two charge that i've detected. So i will test until for two days to see if it work. |
