Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1)

i got a mugen back cover for my n900 last week and two batteries.

all was good but the last couple of days the battery has only been lasting a day, where as last week i was getting two and a half days.

wires all seem to be fine.

can anyone offer any advice?

if running dual scud do you need to do something special other than running them in parallel?

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1)

dr_frost_dk is asking You (andy_con) how You connected both batteries together (we know that in parallel - at least I hope so ;) - but, is it soldered, just tight-contact or whatsnot?).

Also, it would be like if You could perform some current tests with bq27200.sh 5 or, if You prefer that, batterygraph/batteryeye.

It may be totally unrelated to batteries, just something in software, waking up CPU.

Just check my signature, for fuel gauge calibration and bq27200.sh download location. BTW, link to instruction is also on first post of this thread, close to very beginning of it, written in big bold letters ;)

Anyway, I really think it is software issue. for GUI, fool-proof method, just use package (from extras repositories, not sure if -testing, -devel or basic one) batterygraph or batteryeye. Monitoring usage in standby or during certain activities may show what is eating battery life.

i have been trying to measure battery capacity. i place bq27200.sh in usr/bin and the ic2 file in the first location.not in any folder.in the ./ location. where other folders like .dev bin boot are located.still i get this:

i have already seen the guide/instructions but they are rubbish. they state

Pre-Requirements:
bq27200.sh script by shadowjk - place it wherever You want (i suggest /usr/bin, this way You may execute it by typing just "bq27200.sh", without quotes - no need for full path), and chmod +x it.
i2cget from shadowjk's website - place it in ./ (root - *not* MyDocs, or any other place)

how do i out it in the right folder? the instructions tell you where to save it but not how to save it

It seems that following this (relatively simple) tutorial still requires (very) *basic* skills in using xterm. Well, it's not GUI based - and, probably never will be, due to custom nature and time width of calibration process (I think at best, someone may write script to semi-automate it) - so, some educational reading about linux terminal (really, really basic commands) is a must.

Anyway, instructions are clear - download file from one place, put it in another place, and use it, by writing thing that I have put into quotes. Sorry, won't be simpler than that, just read with understanding, pls:

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1)

Open terminal, gain root (you need 'rootsh', 'sudoer' or similar package, refer to it's documentation for 'how to gain root'). Then, write (again, as root!):

mv /path/to/bq27200.sh /usr/bin/

...and hit enter (of course, instead of /path/to/, write *real* path to file). File should be on place now - and You got new line to write in. So, write and execute:

chmod +x /usr/bin/bq27200.sh

...Now, You got everything set up. Now, just by writing and executing:

bq27200.sh

You got one-time dump of info regarding fuel gauge etc. Ho ever, if You execute:

bq27200.sh 5

...You will got "table" in terminal, showing most often used info, and refreshing it every 5 seconds. To stop it, You need to press ctrl+c on your N900 keyboard (just closing terminal will leave it running "invisible" in the background).

Ho ever, considering fact, that You got problems with basic terminal commands (no irony or offense here - You just need to learn this) I'm quite doubtful, that You'll be able to "parse" info you've got correctly. So, I strongly advise You using battery-eye or batterygraph. Those are GUI applications, you should have no problem using them.

Write here if You got any questions, or any conclusions. If You would just like to thanks - at some point - no need for separate post with that, just hit "thanks" button in right bottom corner of one's post.

Good luck!

Now, before you run bq27200.sh script, go to /usr/sbin/

# cd /usr/sbin/
# bq27200.sh

Run those two command lines when your battery is fully loaded and you detach it from the charger.

Use your phone normally until battery starts to get almost empty.
Then run following commands again in xterminal window and leave it running.
# cd /usr/sbin
# bq27200.sh 10

Use your phone normally until battery goes fully empty and the device shuts down. You can connect the charger after the phone has shut down.

Now when you boot your device back up, you can see the true measured capacity of your battery by running:
# cd /usr/sbin/
# bq27200.sh

(One reason why it is this "complicated" is because bq27200.sh script has a bug; hardcoding i2cget path.)

1) bq27200.sh is in /usr/bin (a kludge. should be in /usr/local/bin), which is in your PATH-environment variable so dont care about where it is, just run it when in /usr/sbin where i2cget is for you.

2) It is nice to know.

If you did it by the instructions, then that is the current effective capacity of your battery when fully charged.

You could measure again and double check.

Also after couple of months you'll see the capacity is some smaller due to battery wearing out with time.

True. Technically, it should not be a problem - it just need *very* minor re-touch of bq27200.sh (to make it depends on ic2get package, instead of double-providing it), and proper Maemo packaging. To be honest, I thought about putting it into repos, just waited, if anyone request it ;) (so, basically, anyone else think it should be put into repos).

I'll get into Maemo packaging instructions again, later - I hoped to get up into learning it properly one day, and this easy, little (for packaging, of course - not to write it at the first place...) script is nice excuse for that ;)

Warning! Possible quality drop of latest SCUD batch!

...or, it's just, that large quantity of fake BL-5J Scuds appeared on market. Still, My (received yesterday) shipment of 5 Scuds:
http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm...olesalers.html
...bought from 100% trusted seller (*not* LuciaLui, though), turned out to be crappy 1200 mAh.

I'll post pictures of pakaging later - I'm now traveling, so I'll be able to do it no sooner, than on sunday evening - because there are subtle differences in packaging.

Also - what is more important - the battery itself is *thinner* than 1500 mAh scuds. It's of regular BL-5J battery thickness now.

I'm not sure, if SCUDians just decided to sell batteries of lower quality (my last shipment of "real" scuds got sticker with 2011.04 packaging date, this one is 2011.06), or I just bought fake Scuds - I'll try to check that.

Meanwhile, it would be great, if someone buying from LuciaLui lately, would be able to confirm/deny. Also, photos of such SCUD (especially, lower part with plastic cap) would help - I think I'm able to recognize, if it's 1500 mAh or 1200 mAh one.

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1)

damm that sucks, but unfortunately this is sometimes what you get with Chinese sellers, i have bought so much in the last many years, and when you buy something at start (or start of product coming on their list) then you get a good product, but buy the SAME product 2-4 months later then you get a really crappy product.

Estel 2011-10-13 10:28

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1)

I've updated last post with link to offer with suspicious SCUD's. I think we should add this seller to "untrusted" list. I'm not sure if it is seller fault or SCUD fault, but at least, we know that SCUDs from this seller are "bad", for sure.

If that would turn out to be whole SCUD quality drop, that would really suck - in such a case, I think that "christgift" would turn out to have best offer, considering ultra-low price. Still, I'm aware that it might be just fake SCUDs I've bought. One forum member from China said already - in this very thread - that SCUD is well-respected battery manufacturer in China, so there is still hope for good SCUD's somewhere ;)

Meanwhile, I'm happy that I have quite high stock of full-quality Scuds already - from time to time, someone use my offer of assembling dual-scud or mugen backcover with camera lens cover (or both ;) ) for a "donation".

So, I still can prepare a total of four "real" dual-scuds, for four interested people (or less, if anyone want more than 1 dual-scud).
