Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
I thing that "old" blue Scuds capacity of 1520 should be removed, to not confuse any new user - new blue Scuds are ~1200 mAh (tested thoroughly 3 of them).
I haven't got my new yellow scuds yet, still waiting for delivery :) /Estel |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
I got my new yellow scuds yesterday and tested them - I got 1530 mAh, so my results are totally in line with dr_frost_dk's.
Looking at the batteries, it's obvious, that they're exactly same as "old" blue scuds, just got different label, and are shipped with less over-package-like (smaller), yet metal box ;) So, I think we can delete old value of 1520 from blue scuds (and put 1250 in there), and remove different color from yellow scuds, + give them 1520 mAh (real value can fluctuate between 1500 and 1530, it is normal), cause they're exactly same cells as former 1520 mAh blue scuds. This also mean another thing - I again got a bunch of "winner" scuds, so I can prepare soldered dual-scuds as custom "order" for interested people, again :) /Estel |

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
This is a great thread :D
Going to buy a N900 as this has a great community and i like modding :) After looking through this and other threads, here are some (also battery related) questions: 1. Does anyone (preferably Europe) want to sell his SCUD/ Mugen Cover and/or even an N900? PM me ;) 2. Is there anything else of notice when bying the phone, batteries (SCUD for dual mod) and cover? Does the microSD card still work, as i have read? |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
What is the difference between these SCUD:
http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/6...5mAh-2pcs.html and these: http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm...olesalers.html I saw that the second only has 1420mAnh or are these the same as the ones from the 1st page test? |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Just checking in, been busy lately, have found another battery for testing, will do this in January, not expecting anything like the scud's, but it is from DX so it is a battery almost everybody normally can buy with ease.

1. Probably one of first thing after purchasing - just after placing screen protector on position ;) You should do, is to solder down USB port. It is easier that it may sound (still, it requires some moderate soldering skill), but it's absolutely must-do, if You doesn't want to sign a prayer every time You insert/remove USB plug. 2. microSD - of course it works with Mugen Cover. furthermore, it's recommended for power users, to get magnet out of Mugen Cover, and glue it to corresponding place on device itself - this way, You can remove cover without auto-disabling of microSD card. Especially useful, if You're using swap on microSD, instead of internal eMMC (most likely, you'll want to do so, alongside some swap-related tweaks in system - it's real performance (I/O wise) boots, even if You got only class 2 microSD card). 3. Dual-scuds and Mugen cover - you just need to consider quite long time of delivery from Asia, and carefully choose supplier of batteries (most likely, you'll want to buy from LuciaLui on Aliexpress, as she is only one person who - currently - sell "true" scuds with ~1500 mAh). As for Mugen cover, You can buy it only from Mugen, as per instruction in first post - you may want to apply camera lens shutter mod (Mugen-cover doesn't contain openable shutter for camera, just small switch for recognizing by hardware - physically, camera is "open" for outside world all the time). Check my signature for details. 4. I can always prepare ready-to-use dual-scuds and Mugen Covers with camera lens shutter mod already applied in exchange for a fixed donation to Mugen-Cover-Power proiect (also see signature) + hardware (batteries and Mugen cover itself) cost + shipping ("raw" materials to me, and modified thing to You) cost. Interested people also need to consider possible delays (Mugenians can be picky or "forget" to send package, delivery time may wary, custom offices may went berserker... Someone here know about it already - too well ;) ). Of course, there may be also someone interested in doing so, or, from time to time, or just wanting to sell used dual-scuds (consider possible [although, most likely small] capacity loss), or accessories like Mugen Cover. And, again - every project here is "Open", be it hardware or software, so if you like modding, You're confident in your skills, and have spare time (always more than You would expect, from such project :P ) you may do everything on Your own. /Estel |

1. put it on my to-do list 2. also on the list now 3. already ordered the yellow scuds 2 weeks ago, so that i can hopefully start next year  4. got the cover from yanness, who posted in this thread about some leftovers (thanks again!) Ok, I guess that is the hardware part. Software-wise, I guess the battery script from this thread, then after playing around maybe easy debian and then surely the android/nitdroid software. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
so i bought an original bl-5j battery from a local store (i cant use a credit card right now to buy the scuds) and i noticed there are differences with the battery that originally came with the N900.
here are 2 pictures of the 2 batteries left: the battery that came with n900 right:battery i just bought http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/9653/img2182j.jpg the new battery (right one) has a small bump next to 3.7 volts is this something to worry about? http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4291/img2183p.jpg the new battery (right one) has an additional marking CE and there are differences at the serial number. Anybody can help me short this out? P.S sorry if I am posting kind of off-topic. |

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
is it possible to dual mod two batteries with different capacities, e.g. scud und polarcell?
|
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Quote:
Doing a mod like that will work, but will cause problems like not getting a FULL charge and not getting everything out of the battery's (Full Discharge) It will still without a doubt give you more battery life then a single battery, but i will still recommend same battery's or battery's of very similar capacity. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Ok, then I will skip on dual mod for now and just have two replacement cells in my pocket :)

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
I'm interested in the SCUD battery, but only one piece, can I assume that this one is the same as the link provided in the first post?

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Dr. Frost,
I read about half of this thread but didn't come across if you had ever tested that Maven battery? I'm interested to find out if the the company's claims are accurate. By the way, thanks for an excellent post. I really appreciate a well thought out and thorough guide. Sincerely, Abe |

Do you have a link to that battery then i can get it and test it. I don't mind testing battery's that are not in the realm of the SCUD's, if it is a battery you use and want peace of mind on if it is the right capacity then post a link and i will look into it. |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Here in Serbia I found this battery for sale in almost every store. http://www.daxcell.net/Nokia-5800-BL-5J--1750-mAh-9556
This HINORX battery is, let me put this on one word, trash. Only about 450mAh and no warranty at all. |

Get a donation thing running and i will test the normal BL-5J and the classic mugen XL battery |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Mugen is extremely overpriced, and for sure got *less* capacity that dual-scud. At best, You can expect their advertised capacity (2800, or so, i don't remember it now).
/Estel // Edit dr_frost_dk, as far as I remember, there is no need to test "normal" Nokia's BL-5J, as it was tested already (listed on first page) and got 1300 mAh. Also, remember, that anyone who owns mugen battery can test it using only N900, via method from my signature. I'm also against paying Mugenian's for their overpriced battery, sounds like big waste of donations :p |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!

And the original BL-5J got 1320mAh, my already used original battery that came with my new N900 (had few cycles on it before i tested it) got 1300mAh |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Dr. Frost,
Are you familiar with any stories of Mugen batteries exploding et cetera? A battery is the one part that I am averted to testing out as I fear incredibly cheap manufacturing. Thank you, Abe |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Not heard about exploding/fire venting mugen battery's, but have heard some complaining about bad quality, short lived battery's, even the XL for our N900.

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Dr. Frost,
I have some good news for you. Because of your hard work and dedication, I am going to order you a Mugen at the same time I order myself one. I very much appreciate your work with the battery mod and would absolutely do the same myself if not for one factor: using a separate charging cable. I already carry enough cables around. Anyway, I'm not joking. PM me your address if you'd like and I will order a Mugen battery for you and you can post the results after testing it. Sincerely, Abe |

Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Something worth considering ...
Having mangled a pair of cheapo knock-off BL-5Js trying to pair them up (they were really badly made) as a practice run, it occurred to me I'd be better of getting some refurb Nokia BL-5Js (you can find a few reputable refurb sellers on Ebay). Got a pair of real Nokia batteries for £3 each and they are both 1) decent capacity and 2) exactly the sort of thing you need for practicing on. So - I daresay that is another option if you don't wish to go down the Scud route? BTW - I employed this dual battery trick for my back-up ZTE Blade. Awesome uptime (6 days 13 hours) albeit with careful use of powerbar (the wifi is at best dodgy in this unit, so turning off wifi and bluetooth when not needed is necessary). Cheers for the inspiration :) |
Re: Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1) SCUD is BACK!!!
Anyone know if it is the new or old Mugen backplate/back cover that has the camera switch? I've seen images of one with and one without.
Thanks, Abe |
