How do i open that ini file, can u tell me xterm commands :P

you got 2 option by using open ssh or download leafpad from extras then use this command :
root
leafpad /etc/powervr.d/hildon-desktop.ini
then change the value 0 to 1 save it then restart hopr this helps

there's a typo there.... it's /etc/powervr.d/hildon-desktop.ini

Re: Make n900 smooth, is there even more ?

Hey, over the passed few months, I've tried flipping the switch on /ect/powervr.d/hildon-desktop.ini three times. Each time I turned it on and rebooted, it seemed to have vertical sync enabled for transitions, but the framerate doesn't stay consistent. Anyone else notice this?

i believe my lags and hangs are results of a buggy app plus wrong voltage overclocking configuration.

yeah now it worked, so far looks good.

Actually after playing around for a while this did a big difference i think.

Re: Make n900 smooth, is there even more ?

i went ahead and re-enabled it, fourth time. i'm running ideal profile, 500 to 900 i think, maybe 1Ghz, and this time around the UI itself, not the transitions, lagged beyond belief! scrolling through the app menu was delayed by 3 seconds.

i just disabled it and runnin good now. everyone else seems to benefit from it. maybe i'll enable it immediately in the next reflash.

In my experience lags are generally when the N900 is low on memory and swapping (they can be caused by buggy apps though), and I have never had it hang completely except when I tried turning on that setting in /etc/powervr.d/hildon-desktop.ini. The only issue I've had from overclocking is random reboots from a too low voltage profile.

It should work with wifi tethering out-of-the-box. May I remind you that the same script is running on my router also.

Pls note also my new tutorial in my signature!

What did this do ?? I havent noticed single lag after this, amazing. Only when using internet my phone may lag, so i should try packet injection mentioned above :P

Overclocking makes your device unstable, period.

1. The N900 comes overclocked from Nokia. So we should expect unstability?

2. Why don't I have instability? I overclock at 900 mhz all the time. How do I get the instability?

change the value from 0 to 1

This is actually known to cause instability and frequent crashing.
If you really want your device to be smooth, disable the blur effect in the transitions.ini instead.

For me it made miracles, not a single freeze or crash after that.
Can u tell me how to edit the blurr effect via xterm, might try that aswell to get more boost :P ?

download the app call transition from fap, reboot (not sure if its needed), than open the app, and just zero everything out, hit apply, than restart desktop.

Yet everyone else seems to have super smooth N900s. Don't know whether I am just unlucky with N900s, whether others are pretending their devices are flawless or whether I have something I install that kills the device. Whatever it is this is the most frustrating device I have ever owned. My favourite phone ever due to all the customisations but still the most frustrating ever.

Change to different voltage..xlv or ulv or something...

Re: Make n900 smooth, is there even more ?

I overclocked min-max to 1.15Ghz and watch Youtube in 360p and it's very smooth for some videos. But it gets hot after awhile so have to watch out for that. But i can watch it w/ min-max 500Mhz-1.15Ghz. As far as surfing the web without flash...it is super smooth...and it wouldn't get hot. I normally just use overclocked from 500Mhz to 1.15Ghz and everything is fine. Never have to restart or anything. You just have to test out which profile fit your device. If this device have hardware acceleration....it'll be smooth in watching flash video....but then it'll probably get too hot. I think that's why they don't recommend going over 240p youtube format, maybe cuz it gets hot. I don't know...watching flash video is using too much resource even for PC!! That's why i guess Steve Jobs dont' want it for iphone.

nice to hear, have been looking for 6 months how to speed up the phone as its performance is very poor for me. But after all of these modifications its last doing the job i thought it would do. Still updating the list if i find something useful.

Please do!
I even did step 5 http://n900-tune-up.sourceforge.net/ and it worked well.

A few questions: for transitions control, you suggested, everything 10 and then blank 15, and rotation 40%.
So place everything: blur, task zoom, task rearrange, app open, launcher in, etc as 10?
And blank min, blank max as 15?
Rotate % i placed as 40%, but should i place rotate in, and out as 40?

I should do that step 5 also. Well only rotate% 40, rotate in and out 10. Blank min,max 15, everything else 10. Ofc you can play around and check if it makes any difference, those values are only my suggestion.

That vid is awesome! My n900 runs as smooth, although i do not have mine device Overclocked.
Im trying to find ways to save on battery life. Usually with moderate use, i get through a day and then some, but with heavy use...well you know. Got any tips besides the usual, lower screen dimness, wifi off, 2g on, email set to check on manual, etc?

Thats the problem we have, poor battery. Im currently looking for extra battery... I want raw working power and therefore dont care very much about battery life. What comes to my mind, lovering voltages and underclocking could save some battery. I bought this one but it didnt work... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.44944

1.
Reflash new maemo with latest PR + CSSU

http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU

2.
programs to install:
-swappolube, with proposed settings
-transitioncontrol, everything 10, blank 15 and rotate 40%
-tweakflash, froyo flash
-tracker cfg (Enable “LowMemoryMode”, Set Indexing Throttle to 10) save and restart tracker, rebuild if wanted
-theme customizer and apply fast animations

3.
- overclock. 24/7 900-1100mhz. (i suggest to use default voltages as its more stable for me.) Check jakimans oc guide http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=774

- remove touchscreen vibration and system sounds from settings
- apply cssu features (download software if needed)

-Disable autoupdate (when you connect to internet this is why your phone lags) type to xterm (you dont have to root): gconftool -s --type int /apps/hildon/update-notifier/check_interval 1440000

4.
-Remove all unnecessary widgets and shortcuts

-download leafpad, open xterm and type:
root
leafpad /etc/powervr.d/hildon-desktop.ini
change the value from 0 to 1 save and reboot
______________________________

Below here is outdated and old stuff:
______________________________

I guess almost everything is in this program now: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...846#post913846

-Download modified hildon desktop (suggest matans desktop)
Add matans repository and download via application manager http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Matan

5. This one i havent tried yet because it may not work with swappolube, its for audio boost anyway http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=63997

6. I also removed fourth desktop, and now using just 3

7. After all tweaks remember to reboot.

- If your phone lags with overclocked, it may be caused if you have too low voltages. Try lovering mhz or putting more voltages.

- what i have learned so far in this thread, tweaking dsp could help. Anything else ?

After all of this my n900 works like i thought it would.

If you find your n900 slow try my tweak steps. Opinions and thoughts are welcome.

worth checking: Jakimans tweaks http://shootspeak.com/2010/12/05/nok...rmance-tweaks/

To speed up your internet (i dont suggest this as it works very bad for me)
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=67710

I just updated my post a bit. Tracker cfg controls how your media mp3, images and other are "listed" in your phone. As i have understood your phone searches music files all the time and that may give bad performance sometimes. I red those tunes in jakimans guide. I noticed that if you add example mp3 files in your phone it wont start searching them immediately, only when you open your mediaplayer it searches them. Hope you understood something :)
