Ah, sorry, misunderstanding. I thought it was about the blank screen.

Try and paste the error, plus the steps taken to get to that error, you receive here on the board so we can see what needs to be done.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

@anthonie
Thanks for the help. Surprisingly, I once again uninstalled it all and reinstalled and it seems to work now. I'm not sure if the image was extracted improperly the first time (same size as the one I just extracted again) or what but now it actually booted up.
I gotta set up an icon theme and all that I guess but so far, so good.

Any update on anybody trying Unity for this yet? Seems like it might be a nice addition.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

Don't count on unity. Too much of a resource hog. If you really want more eye candy, your best bet is E17. If you want to see what that looks like, go ahead and install the Archlinux distro from the first page. I think Juan updated the instructions there, otherwise you'll be able to find within the first 10 pages or so. The Illume theme, for instance, has a wonderful clean interface. I posted some screens in the thread before.

Right now I am working on getting Enlightenment (E17) to run on Gentoo, but don't count on anything being ready before end of next week.

Yeah, I was wondering if it'd be too heavy for the N900.
I remember using Enlightenment before (in Elive IIRC) and it was great. I might decide just to go with the ArchLinux route. I'll probably build that distro on my other comp though before attempting it on the phone (though I'm sure Juan's instructions should help me through it all anyway). Good project though for using Virtualbox.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

I finally installed Ubuntu on the Phone, but I noticed a few issues. When i open the ubuntu-lxde, and I go back to maemo task manager, the keyboard in ubuntu does not work anymore. The same thing happens when I open ubuntu-Lxde and I click on the N900 power button. Is there something to do to fix it???

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

@cincibluer6

Arch is pretty nice, al though I prefer Gentoo, being, IMO, more versatile. The Arch Mobile repo's lack most important software, for instance the make build engine is not there. So, you can try the bit of software that's available but after that you'll have to cross-compile on another machine.

@Boemien, you applied the qole-provided fixes?

That was a long week... Has anyone got Gentoo running correctly yet?
I see a lot of posts (not really a lot) with it not being very good.

Has anyone got it to boot to GUI yet?
I'm only now able to download. Been bush for a week (trail bike) :D

Edit: As for ubuntu keyboard - You are on the newest build? There are 2 (or more?) versions. Newest has working keyboard.
SoftCenter - Hit or miss. Works fine for me, just slow.

What do you mean with "not very good"? The OS or how itīs been working so far?

Root image provided by Juan is available atn. But itīs image is too small and hence there are lots of emerge problems.

Itīs been a bit of a busy week here too, so Iīve not been able to work on it. End of this week should bring more of a GUI. Unless you can provide me an image file of at least 4-6 gigs :)

There is no keyboard issue anymore. Use the search function for this thread, as it has been answered a few times already.

Do you understand what i am saying?? Do you have ubuntu installed on your phone?? try going back to maemo and then back to ubuntu, without closing it, and try to enter some text or whatever!!

I tried qole keyboard fix but it does not work!!!

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

just tried what you've said: ubuntu - maemo - ubuntu. I do have the keyboard issue..

It's not that big of an issue. It's working fine in easy debian. I'd say it wouldn't be that difficult to solve. We may just be able to find the easy debian scripts and copy & paste the parts we need :D

If anyone has meego chroot installed, does this keyboard issue exist? Not the original meego - 1.1b (2nd qole release).

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

Ok... Gentoo - Is it a problem with the archive or me?
I have downloaded twice - Tried to extract with mac and N900 - Errors.
On N900 just get a failed to extract (at about 195kb).
On mac - There is not enough disk space to perform the operation.

I have plenty of space...

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

There is no problem (well should not be) with ubuntu :)

What computer are you using? Mac/Linux/Windows?
Unzip/lzma on your pc and copy/paste to /MyDocs/

Edit: I'm going to try a lazy *** fix on the ubuntu keyboard tomorrow (21:35 here. Time to watch a movie with the wife).

My idea is crude and probably not effective - But all ideas are good ideas :)

I'm Counting on you mate!!! :D

Off-Topic: waaa Ubuntu It's a fully functional OS. I managed to install LMMS, a FL Studio like software. I will try to install other programs. Thanks to you all for working on it!!!

Edit: An other issue, when I click on "close all" to unmount the system, i still can't connect it via USB in Mas storage mode. I'm obliged to reboot the phone to be able to connect it via USB!! Is it a general issue???

Got it working!
But it's a hack job and I need to figure out how it's doing it.
This way I can update Juan's scripts.

BUT!

Keyboard focus between maemo - ubuntu - maemo - etc is working for me.

Are you using the newest Ubuntu image?
View/Download:

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=292

It's the same background. You have to setup your own look for LXDE (easy debian's theme effect's this too [mine does?])

kingoddball 2011-01-04 22:53

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

haha.. Sorry.

What I did was place the ubuntu image (that I linked 2 posts ago) into the Easy Debain (Qole's release) and it... Done something stupid.
When I booted easy debain - It done nothing, then I ran Ubuntu (by Juan's icon) and I have full keyboard focus anywhere :D

What I have found - Qole's work is damn good! ;)
We should be using his scripts for keyboard focus. If someone can find these and link them up, I will try and do it without screwing with Debian.

I just need the easy debian scripts. I don't know where these are on my N900.

But, so we can all have something to be happy about - Keyboard focus is easily fixed! Just a matter of cleaning some scripts (which I don't have).

Boemien 2011-01-05 00:11

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

So it seems to be a problem of script. As Juan is not on the project anymore, at least until February, maybe qole could help us fixing this "bug"

@kingoddball:
And Also did you notice the terminal problem into ubuntu? I can't enter anything! Are you facing the same problem??? to install softwares into ubuntu I am obliged to chroot ubuntu into the maemo terminal!

kingoddball 2011-01-05 01:22

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

I did notice the terminal problem lastnight. I didn't take any notice until you pointed it out (I use chroot for terminal access).

Maybe if we install a different terminal program. Easy Debian uses ROXterm.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

hi, been away from this thread for a while now but still seems people are strugglin with same issues, the only issues i faced on this was that u need easy deb to solve keyboard on terminal but when i have both ubuntu an deb installed the panels took up around the upper left corner but with only ubuntu installed tis fine (i prefer the ubuntu), i presume these setting are bein taken from the hildons gnome conf and the other prob was a duplication of media files (one file read twice)

but still non the less this is a fanastic bit o work an well done to the developers, with people askin for distro this an that surely the best way to go would be a super light weight distro like puppy, dsl an alike

Has anybody succeded installing ArchLinux as a distro for itself on the SD card, like NTDroid?

kingoddball 2011-01-17 09:33

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

@ Marcus: Possibly. Wouldn't be hard.
Find a compatible kernel (maybe ubuntu/NITbuntu) and extract the files to the ext3 formated (p2) SD card.

Might boot. Give it a try.

@ Istota: What files do you have to add? :)
If you or anyone else can find me the Easy Debian scripts, they will help solve the problem :D

Maybe the easy debian*.deb can be opened and scripts can be pulled from there?

I can not solve the software center (maybe someone else can) at this point.
