Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
kubuntu will b great if its in easy debain
|
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
It will be far too slow as a chroot.
Use it as a standalone. XFCE is too slow. LXDE is great. |
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
having just trashed a Easy Debian install because I wanted to go full Squeeze I can definitely feel the appeal of your work :P (easy debian as a stock OS is next to useless by now due to the obsolete software and inability to reliably install new software due to dependencies spread across lenny, squeeze and old-school sid -- Nice proof of concept though!))
Anyway, will definitely be doing this, so huge thanks ;) Think I'm going the Arch route, may be more work but it's what I normally use :D |
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
I have successfully extracted / partition from ubuntu maverick omap image. I have used the scripts on the first page to mount it and enter the chroot, but after starting the gnome-desktop, phone just reboots...
|
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
I foud out that my ubuntu maverick filesystem was broken, so I downloaded latest natty omap4 image, extracted the filesystem from disk image, checked with e2fsck and uploaded to n900. Phone now reboots even on simple comands like "echo" executed in chroot environment. Any advice?

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
I was able to start unity2d after disabling watchdog:
Code:
./flasher-3.5 --set-rd-flags=no-omap-wdBut when I was trying to close the chrooted Xephyr, phone initiated a correct reboot cycle and I was not able to start unity again. (Maybe related to multiboot. I guess it could enabled the watchdog. Will verify later, when I get microusb cable again.) |

So anybody figured out if it's possible to boot directly into these?
|
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
These are chroot. Virtual machine-ish things... You want to boot directly?
Multiboot and extract to SD and see how you go.... |

Just wondering why nobody has tried this yet, etc. installing ArchLinux on their N900. The problem is that I'm kind of clueless, so if somebody were to give it a shot, please do a step by step. |
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
No drivers for supporting the phone.
Chroot uses maemos drivers. Use ubuntu if you Want. It's all nicely done. |
Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
There are already attempts to boot custom distro on n900.
Debian for example: https://elektranox.org/n900/installation/index.html |

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
Is the Ubuntu image of the original post definitely lost, with no mirror at all? I tried the ubuntu-m5-v1.img.ext2.lzma file from Qole's website, but ubuntu-N900 fails at mounting it. :(

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
Gnome - Yep.
Find the right packages and if it will install. Yes. :D I've had a few others run. |

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux
dear everyone who miss the files,
i just finished the whole process with ubuntu, it is working fine (thanks juandp77). you can download the image files from here. For me, the "ubuntu-n900.deb" link is working, so you should install the .deb file. After i downloaded the image file (i mean the one with .lzma extension), i copied it to my n900 MyDocs' folder then i extracted it there with 7zip, but you can of course do this by extract it on your PC then copy the .ext2 file to n900's MyDocs folder. Then launch ubuntu LXDE and smile (: jm |
