Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

I'm confused, is there a new fedora image apart fromb the one that kept failing during decompression? the one on the first page right? thanks if so I will try it...

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

So what should I remove from my device to reinstall ubuntu back from scratch? I did uninstall the ubuntu-N900.deb and removed /home/user/.ubuntu is there anything else?

juandp77 2010-12-24 18:05

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

@extendedping: the first page has all the updates, once again if you are having problems to ncompress the file please do it in your computer and then copy the file to MyDocs or to sdcard

@ammyy: if you installed previous versions please do this:

sudo rm /usr/bin/ubuntu-lxde
sudo rm /usr/share/applications/hildon/ubuntu.desktop

there is no need to remove the /.ubuntu folder altought the scripts will create a new one if you delete it so it's not really a problem

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

looks like it failed because I only had 190m of the image. every attempt to download since fails at under 100m.

No chroot fedora under the tree :(

deny_winarto 2010-12-25 09:06

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

I'm the other way around,

It passes its own size again :
"unknown time remaining - 224 of 218 MB "

How is that possible??? What's the real size anyway?

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

Am I the only one getting the "profile setup" upon firefox launch, which btw doesn't save?

Weird thing is, I uninstalled Ubuntu, reinstalled Easy Debian, and I'm still asked to setup a user profile (for Iceweasel). I've used ED/Iceweasel for months and not until Ubuntu via chroot have I had this issue.

As always, thanks juandp for the excellent work.

For juandp's Easy Ubuntu, I'm going to say yes (basic Ubuntu not ARM optified). If you're after more "native" installation, here's a thread that started off how to dualboot Ubuntu 9.10, and it has later evolved to a Ubuntu 10.10 discussion:

hi kingoddball, I can post the the gentoo.img.ext2 (currently uploading) basically its just the roofts, what I need its someone how knows the installation process and customization (like installation of x-base desktop environment and xephyr) so from that I can build the scritps and the .deb installation file. I really don't have so many time, next week I will tarvel to Spain for my postgrade studies so I will not be abble to post, at least not in January

Hi Juan,
Now worries, I will help how I can.
Are you able to get a basic script running with a working chroot (like ubuntu/fedora etc)? I will just try copy the scripts from fedora and modify how it's needed?
It's all a good learning curve for me :)

When you upload it, please send me the link and I will do what I can :D

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

Thanks got the dropbox fedora. Unlzma worked but tar xvf makes phone reboot. I am as per advice going to copy it to a computer to untar. This is perhaps for another thread but I figure I'd ask here as I am sure people here do more uncompressing then most...did all these reboots with a little stress occure on the n900 prior to 1.3? I ask because I did several untars back then and never had any reboots.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux using Easy-Chroot

Hi, I am using easy fedora and ubuntu. In fedora: how can I perform a left mouse click(like a long tap in easy debian)?
In ubuntu: can I have different lxde for easy debian and for easy ubuntu? because what's happening now is that the designed lxde is common in both ubuntu and debian and I want to seperate them?
If someone knows the answer, be my guest!
Thanks

I had reboots every time i tried extracting the image on the phone. And not just Ubuntu but also Arch, even now Easy Debian. First time I've had problems with Debian (after PR1.3), weird.

Thanx Juan,

This image really needs some work. Tried an emerge --sync which ran for an hour, but tried to sync the whole repository and ran out of space. Will look into it later and report back. Thanks nevertheless.

if you ran out of space maybe we need a biger image, perhaps 3 or 3.5 gb

Wait with that.

Couple of questions first.

Your image has one of the same problems that mine also had: a profile problem that somehow I did not manage to get solved, within the chroot. I don't know what the problem is yet. Have you encountered this yourself?

Flags. Have any flags been set?

It looks to me as if there should be a better solution than just increasing the image size.

Re: [TUTORIAL-WIP] N900-LINUX: Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux

Sorry to come in with this but I can't seem to make Ubuntu run. I downloaded the image (had to take it off and decompress on the desktop though) and put that in MyDocs. Installed the .deb and rebooted. When I try to click on Ubuntu LXDE, it acts like it wants to start and then quits.
Any ideas on how to make it work? I can access chroot in the terminal for Ubuntu but don't know what I might do to make it work there.

First of all let me thanks to qole for the job he has done , I modify the scripts he used to run Meego in Xephyr in order to run this linux distros

WARNING: Do this at your own Risk!!!
There are still so much work to do, this is a work in progress project so keep that in mind if you want to install this

So lets go, first of all, you need this:

* Easy-chroot installed
* Easy-Debian (not necessary but recommended)
* Rootsh and nano installed on the device

Please follow all the steps in orden, pay special attention in the locations of the files.

Tried and it works! Very simple and easy instructions for Ubuntu. Thank you. :)

Actually we do. Iīll increase the size with dd today, because no matter what I tried I kept running into disk space problems after emerging what seemed to be the whole universe, the internet and the old bbs-archives in one :).

I donīt know where you got the image, but I noticed no negative USE flags had been set in /etc/make.conf. I assume that to be the reason we ran out of space here. So, Iīll increase the image and retry a new emerge --sync to get up to date and install a WM.

Travel safe!

I'm currently on page 18 and haven't found anything yet. I've seen the black screen problems but not with a failed boot. If I can't figure it out, I'll post results of going into Ubuntu chroot.
It is along the lines of having "no image file or partition specified." and there is no directory in /media/mmc1/ubuntu.img though I know the file is actually in MyDocs. I might try copying it to the card and rebooting and hoping for it to work.
