Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
1 Attachment(s)
Just released in SZ (China). New iPad clones run Android 2.2 / Windows 7 with "decent" hardware equal to iPad, supporting Flash 10.1 and multitasking.
8" Android 2.2 aPad - 1GHz Cortex A8 Processor - 512MB DDR2 10.1" Windows 7 ePad - 1.66GHz Atom N455 - 2GB DDR3 - 32GB SSD Any reviews, discussion on those? I have laid my money down and waiting for the courier to show up. Been burnt before and not holding my breath, but as an ebook reader and wifi surfer? |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
The 10.1 looks like specs for a netbook. Looks too good to be true....I think it's a scam. I would suggest an Archos 101. It's very good.

Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
There are a whole number of these out there, unfortunately they all seem to be cheap copies which puts me off. The only reputable ones I've seen are the Galaxy Tab and the Dell Streak which are both quite small so even more useless than the Ipad!

Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
I honestly think Archos 101 is a very good competitor to iPad if you know how to use it....HDMI, full USB, excellent video formats playable, good screen, nice solid state 16gb etc etc.....

Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
theres no way i would buy any chinese copy products, where is the nearet service centre ect!
my wife decided she wanted an ipad for xmas so we played with both ipad and galaxy tab in currys uk, just flipping the page of an e book backwards and forwards, the galaxy was stuttering on every page turn, the ipad never stuttered once, so im now down 599 pounds! |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
I would buy a cheap clone in a heartbeat. I have very little faith in customer service anyway, having done it for many years and realizing how common ignorance is.
So if I can't get a clone to work, I can throw it away. |

I have seen reviews on youtube for the aPad and it looks okay. The clones in general are probably decent but not spectacular. Still - for basic use, it definitely beats plopping down $500 for an iPad. |

I've heard it's the best tablet available after the tweeks, leaving the iPad in the dust. But I truly know 3.0/Honeycomb is the tablet OS, and it will land about the time iPad2 hits shelves. Expect a colourful '11. |

@dannycamps
There's a big difference between the ARM11 Viewsonic ViewTab 7 and the dual-core Viewsonic G-Tablet. Don't confuse the two, that would be a mistake. Read more here |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
the g-tablet with custom roms from xda is good, the tegra 2 is fast and the ui very responsive... i got this over the archos as its twice the memory and a dual core processor. the stock viewsonic tap n tap ui is crap but its very easy to flash. i also have full market access after following another xda hack, very good tablet.

AND LOVE IT... Ultimately though, it depends on what you are going to be using it for is the main factor between choosing anything based on specs. Cheaper isn't always better! After the freedom of the N900 I really don't like the limitations of the iPad / Apple (I also have mini & ATV 1st gen). But the iPad serves my basic needs very well. Instant web browser and pocket-sized remote control for XBMC / iTunes etc :) http://www.ipadhacks.com/wp-content/...pad-pocket.jpg |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
Wow, thanks for the heads up on G-Tablet. Just ordered one from Amazin' Amazon =)

Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
Sure thing. I will mainly be comparing it against the iPad, since that's my current tablet.
I guess I've to go hit xda-dev and read up now... |

Over time, I've also found/accumulated more ways/gadgets to 'overcome' 'not having 3G'... :D So, we'll see... |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
You can plug in a USB 3G antennae (costs <$80).
All you need to do is slide in your 3G SIM card, and your good to go* The biggest drawback is having the damn dongle on whenever you want to access the internet (or having it on 24/7 if you want push email/constant access). *as long as the usb-stick is supported and the custom ROM you flashed supports 3G connectivity. Has anyone preordered a Notion Ink Adam. I really want to know how that beast stacks up, is the UI fluid? usb host just works? PixelQi upto snuff? |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
I picked up a Viewsonic G Tablet last night after reading through so many great reviews on the XDA forum and was eager to flash to one of the many great ROM’s available.
Unfortunately, once I started playing with it, this amazingly spec’d device I was slammed in the face with the fact the screen truly is terrible. At odd angles, it is similar to an ancient laptop. Since one of the reasons I wanted a tablet was to replace the Kindle my wife procured from me, this is a deal killer. I want a tablet. I want one badly. Not going to try forcing the issue anymore. I will wait for a solid Maemo tablet or for Android to mature. |

Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
I've hear the G-Tablet's screen is better than all the KIRFs (obviously) and much better than the Toshiba Folio 100.
Obviously everyone says its not as good as the iPad's or the Galaxy Tab's for that matter. However, it is decent and I've heard the quality is on par with the Archos devices (except you know it has more pixels and less gloss = good). |
Re: Android 2.2 iPad Alternatives
I know this isn't of any importance nor does it help you; however I'm not a big fan of copies of bad ideas - better tablets exist than the iPad. Heck, the fact that the Galaxy Tab, albeit flawed, has a forward facing camera and a rear camera. Or improve upon what you're copying at least.
Despite the fact that I have an iPad, it's a very flawed tablet. I do have to code for it though... so that's why I have it. Anyway, look elsewhere. |
