FAT32 is Dirty
 

I had the N900 plugged in my laptop when I started the laptop. I got the blue screen and some scan started off and I saw "FAT32 is dirty" in one of the scan status. Can someone advise how do we 'clean' the FAT32? Perhaps defrag it under mass storage mode or something? Of is there a specific application or process with the N900?

Sorry but its the first time I'm reading such terminology , how a file system can be dirty? Maybe its damaged or has errors but dirty? :D


Try to connect N900 via mass storage mode and check for error in Windows

Whenever I plug in mass storage, I'll always get warning "OfficeScan detected unauthorized access to devices connected to your computer".

Can we run file defragment through mass storage mode? or any similar defragment process from the N900?

Can you use the N900 as a mass storage device? Ignore the messages? Or Kill/terminate application whatever that officescan is?

It's just a warning and I could always use mass storage.

My concern was when I left the N900 plugged in when I started the laptop and I got the 'blue screen' and some scan result saying FAT32 is dirty...

Anyone tried that and got the same result? So far my N900 is still usable and my SD contents still intact.

Another thing was how do we 'defragment' the file in N900 like we do for PC?

Errors like this may occur after false ejection of the device from your pc. Do a filesystem check from the device in X-Terminal. You need rootsh from extras installed

Why Officescan?

I thought that was a security software for corporate networks.
They use it where I work, simply because the network handles highly sensitive data on clients.

Unless you tell Officescan to go ahead and kill what it's found, your N900 should be fine. But I use Avira Antivirus on my home PC and that flashes up a warning that Auto-Run is disabled for security everytime I plug my N900 in as mass storage.

I'm assuming your laptop is Windows?
I guess I'm the only Windows guy here. lol

In general, dirty is a term used for NTFS file system when it has a dirty bit set due to a non-clean dismount of the volume. So if your MyDocs partition which is FAT32 on the N900 is said to be dirty, it can be cleared by running "chkdsk /f" on that drive from the command prompt. (or right click properties on that drive from Windows Explorer and go to tools - error checking - check now and make sure to check the box for auto fix)

Defragmentation is used for HDDs when files are fragmented into pieces across the disk. Doing it on a flash-based memory won't do anything, and you shouldn't do it.
Error-checking? Worked for me back in the days of Windows.
But FSCK-method is faster.

Yes, I'm still Windows. How do I run "chkdsk/f"? On my laptop via mass storage mode? Or is there a way directly on the N900? By the way, could we identify if it was the 32Gb or the SD card?

Well, does your laptop still bluescreen if you connect your N900 via mass storage? If it doesn't, then it's easy.

Just hook up the N900 via mass storage.
Then you will see 2 new drives in explorer. (eg. F and G drive)

Now go to command prompt in WIndows. (Start - Run - type "cmd")

Then run:

chkntfs f:
chkntfs g:

This just checks for the dirty flag and will tell you which one is set.
Then run:

chkdsk f: /f
chkdsk g: /f

(depending on which drive letter is said to be dirty)
Once the chkdsk completes, it will clear the dirty bit.

if you can't get into windows, you can use a recovery disk if your using vista or 7 and if your still on XP you would need the installation disk and you would boot into the recovery console instead of the installation by pressing R
