Offline Navigation

Is there any software that will allow me to download maps of certain cities and use that for offline navigation?

Try searching for Maemo Mapper by Gnuite. Quite a handy little app. Allows you to download several different map types (google, virtual earth, etc.) at various zoom levels directly to an internal repository for offline viewing. What's better is that if you have a bluetooth GPS reciever you can use it as a navigation tool with spoken directions (sounds like Stephen Hawking guiding your journey) and *most* everything else coming from a dedicated navigation device.

Thanks

can you choose which cities you want to download? Like for example, I am going to Tahoe this weekend, can I download all of tahoe for my trip?

you can use the app called winmapper, that will allow you to specify a city, and which zoom levels to include.

you'll have to search for it, as i dont have the link handy

Yes, you can specify an area to download, zoom levels, and what type of map (street, satelite, hybrid).

You can download those maps directly in Maemo Mapper, yes... A future version will allow you to specify a single point of reference (e.g. "Tahoe") and download surrounding maps.

Until then, you just need to find the latitude and longitude of the corners of the rectangle inside which you'd like to download maps. You can use Google Earth to find the coordinates easily.

Wow, winmapper works like a charm. It downloaded maps quickly and easily. Now, I am going to go try them!

Re: Offline Navigation

I'm totally confused on how to run winmapper. I brought up the interface and filled in 40.1, -84.1 for the top left and 40.0, -84.0 for the bottom right. I selected zoom level 6. I clicked on Download for top left and got the error message: "System error: -2146697210. Line: 0"

Ignoring that, I selected region and street towards the bottom and the clicked on Download at the very bottom and it procedded to download something and then gave me a popup saying All Don!

I went to the directory where the maps were supposed to be stored and found under directory 6, I found two subdirectories: 545 and 546. Both directories were empty.

Is there a user manual for winmapper or at least a sample for using it?

I downloaded by city name and it downloaded great. I transferred it to my mem card and installed. I changed the map repository to the new folder on my mem card, but can't seem to get it to work.

I also moved them to the "maps" folder on the internal memory, but still no luck. Can someone tell me how to do this, please?

Re: Offline Navigation

Are you doing this from your PC with winmapper then downloading to N770? And how do you find the long & lat coordinates.
Thanks, JB

In my case I made up the lat/lon coordinates. I know that they cover a block of terrain in my area. I would like to see a simple step-by-step list of how to use winmapper.

I would as well. I downloaded the maps for San Deigo on my sd card, but not sure what I do to get maemomapper to read those. Also even when I'm in offline mode, maemomapper always yells at me to go to online mode. Any way to disable this?

I downloaded from http://ioanghip.googlepages.com/winmapper.htm . It tried to download map, it created lots of directories but all are empty. I tried searching this forum, but couldn''t find any remedy. Does anybody else had this problem ? Any pointers to fix this (empty dirs) problem will also help.

Thanks.

Same story here. I tried winmapper a few days ago using known latlong corners and gots lots of empty subdirectories. I gave up.

Looks like a very useful program but I am missing some key parameter to make it work!

I removed the proxy server I was behind and connected directly to the net and then winmapper worked like a charm.

Wow, great news for you, too bad for me :(. I can pre-authenticate to my proxy server but disabling it altogether is a deal breaker. I wish there were some way around this.
