Pants on Fire
hey, for all over clocking people, is it possible to have a program, that alerts when the cpu/battery getss to EFFFIN HOT ????? like it could give a notification " PANTS ON FIRE" so the user like me (noOb) can reduce the clock speed from 1200mhz to 600mhz stock ?

Re: Pants on Fire
look at conky??????????
|
Re: Pants on Fire
how can i ask conky to alert me ?.. and i dont find any cpu tem in it !!!!
|
Re: Pants on Fire
CPUFreqUI shows cpu temperature...
|
Re: Pants on Fire
its actually a rather good idea, should be easy to implement, but you've probably alienated a lot of people with a stupid and irrelevent thread title. i know a lotta folk here will think troll and avoid.

you have to enable it first and use a different conky.conf search the entire beutify conky thread.
hers a pic |
Re: Pants on Fire
i rather not search, but how can i get the conky in the pic above ??????? for god sake any simpler method ?

Re: Pants on Fire
One of the posters here created a script that adjusts the overclocking profile based on battery level and temperature. I don't much like it because once you have worked out the optimal voltage profile for your device you shouldn't need to change it, thus this script is a sub-optimal way of running, but it can be used as an example of how to change overclocking settings based on temperature. If you are interested here is the relevant thread.
Alternatively, do you really need to be running @1200MHz when you aren't using it? If not then there is a guide on the wiki of how to change the clock speed when your N900 is locked/unlocked which will prevent "pants on fire" problems, and when you are using it you should be able to feel it getting too hot and rectify the situation manually. |
Re: Pants on Fire
i wouldnt run it at 1200mhz at all, honestly. the temp jump from 1150 to 1200 is substantial, but the performance gain isnt noticable, either way, keep on rockin.

Re: Pants on Fire
ok go to this thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...pu+temp&page=4
post nr 71.copy and paste the code to /etc/conky/conky.conf be sure you delete the code in there first.i hope you now how to copy and paste code to system folders. after that you have to enable the temp sensor for conky. go xterm an: sudo gainroot echo bq27x00_battery >> /etc/modules after that reboot and conky will show you your temp success |

Re: Pants on Fire
man im sorry, but have to ask, how do u copy system files ??? like i got the code fro the post.. in windows browser, i can copy text there,,, and in my n9000 im using file box, was able to locate conky confi... but have no clue how to oepn and paste the code !!! :S:S:S:S:S im a noob
|
Re: Pants on Fire
and below post 71, is a zip file, which i downloaded, it has a config file, shal i use that to replace the one in n900? and if yes, is there a way ?
|
Re: Pants on Fire
there are different wys for that.for example leafpad.
i use midnight commander.its a good working file explorer with many functions. download it go xterm. type root mc (thats cause midnight commander needs root to edit system files) then go to your conky conf tap on edit, erease the old code tap on the upper bar and push "paste" (you have to copy james code first) then exit and don't forget to save, type this in xterm: sudo gainroot echo bq27x00_battery >> /etc/modules reboot and you are finish;) |
Re: Pants on Fire
cute explorer is crap you can't paste code to system files with it

Re: Pants on Fire
hope ur not to busy, but im in crises causse i erased all the text in the file, and not able to paste the code from the browser on n900 ....
|
Re: Pants on Fire
no problem dude.you have to paste it with the upper bar.
there should be written something like mc@root n900. tap on it and there is a paste button. |
Re: Pants on Fire
okay man done, i coppied the entire code from 1st line till last, pasted it, but when i say save, it says " SAVE AS" some options, i dont change any thing, then i hit ok, it says "CANNOT SAVE" any idea whats wrong now ?
|
Re: Pants on Fire
are you sure your opened midnight commander as root?
don't use the icon from the menu.you have to give mc root permissions. xterm and root then mc |

no problem

Re: Pants on Fire
You're probably shortening the life of your N900 significantly by overclocking it like that, but i guess you already know that

Re: Pants on Fire
I don't wanna say you're wrong, but where'd you read that?
I just checked ARM's site, as far as it's concerned, the Cortex A8 is a variant in the Cortex-A series, four variants are available - A5, A8, A9, A15. There's only one Cortex-A8 available on their site, and it says Quote:

Re: Pants on Fire
you know the whole reason i decided to customize the conky source was so people wouldn't need to do that anymore... just type ${battery_temp} and save your cpu cycles. you guys are going to get that version eventually so you might as well get used to it :)
|
Re: Pants on Fire
You can easily do this with Desktop Command Execution Widget.
The command will be: Code:
echo $(cat /sys/class/power_supply/bq27200-0/temp)°CCode:
echo bq27x00_battery >> /etc/modules |
Re: Pants on Fire
Even if the processor itself is safe, there is the matter of the other hardware components that interact with it. For example the other day I learned while at the IRC channel that the controller for the internal memory gets stressed out beyond specs if you OC the processor.

Re: Pants on Fire
True, but most users, as in like 99% of users who've been overclocked for months seem okay. Plus, as long as you don't set the limits to the same number, say /usr/sbin/kernel-config limits 1000 1000, most of the time it's clocked at 0.
