[SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

Perhaps there will be a new coding competition in several weeks and I wonder what kind of useful applications are there still missing at the N900.
Note:
Even if you are a good programmer... sometimes the problem is simply the lack of a good idea. And for this I created this thread. Simply to try to inspire some developer as soon as the competition starts.
We have plenty of useful and outstanding applications. But do they cover all needs? What is missing?

And I don't talking about joke applications like a Coffee cooking App, X-Ray body scanner or a iPhone fart app.

No, I'm hunting for great, outstanding and practical ideas.
Perhaps a N900 parking assist system if something like this could be possible without expensive external Hardware. (I couldn't imagine myself but perhaps someone has a great idea how to implement this - signal transit time from earspeaker to microphone or something like this?)

So please. Post here what you would like to see in the future at your favorite Maemo / MeeGo Device (N900 and his successors). Perhaps a gifted developer would like the Idea too. :)

Edit:
And please, take some effort to describe exactly about what you're talking. And don't throw only names of some applications in this forum that nobody knows what this application could do. Thanks. :)

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

I already posted so many ideas on the forum (or at least that is how the past feels in my memory), kinda a lot of work to try to find all the threads and evaluate each idea on whether it goes over the "just a toy" threshold...

Web forums isn't really the best format for such things to start with; i've head a good experience using Jira, it worked well for classifying and organizing issues and ideas as well as for discussing them (though perhaps it still won't help ideas spread when there are lots of them flying around, people still gotta go around telling others to go read the stuff they want more people to be aware off), i know Jira isn't open and stuff, but i haven't really dealt much with any competitors and alternatives, the few i did use was just very rarelly, they felt clumsier and less streamlined, but it could be just lack of practice on my side (and perhaps on the operators too)

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

1. The cool new app Hivemind could use further development.

2. I think that an app that would read, say, a newspaper article (or anything else in a clipboard buffer) aloud is possible but not completely implemented yet. A good voice is not so easy and I don't think there is one now, but even a crappy voice, which does exist, is better than nothing.

3. I'm using the 9-screen setup made possible by Matan's modified Hildon desktop, but an app that made the whole thing even easier to set up would probably be welcomed.

4. I wonder if an easier way to flash could be implemented? Maybe without using a PC, so people with broken USBs could use it. I'm sure that anyone who did so would be worshipped by some.

My 2 most wished for apps are (in no particular order)

A dedicated forum app like forum runner
Something that would allow me to read all my digital subscriptions that currently require Zinio Reader. Not sure if this is possible as I suspect it is closed source?

Not very useful, but fun and a 2nd proof of concept:
3D-image creator from the front and back camera (with LED light on) would be nice to have also as with iPhone's Trimensional (and this).

Offline speech recognizing type-method, dictionary and word translation would be a killer.

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

I've got a list... but they should be 'easy'

AisleRiot; I know there is an N8xx version of this, and that it works, but it would be awesome to be updated with the clutter animations and actually be put in the fremantle repositories.

PPTP VPN Client; Or a fortinet VPN SSL Client. Anyone get this to work? I tried the setup scripts before and never quite got it to work. It'd be nice for a 'universal' VPN gui, like network-manager or even better, if someone could integrate it into the built-in connections manager.

Gnome-Games (or KDE Games); I guess this could overwrite the want for AisleRiot, I find it odd that Mahjongg from Gnome came with the phone, but none of the other Gnome games made it.

PUAE; The effort to actually get equal features from WinUAE to Unix style operating systems is awesome. It's about time. I would love for it to be up to date and working. There is even a Qt interface in the works. This would/could replace UAE4ALL and E-UAE in the repositories (actually if I recall, the E-UAE in the repositories is based on this code.)

Flash 10.1; Just kidding.

dget; I'm not sure if this is already out there, but how awesone would it be to be able to get a .dsc file out of debian proper, and be able to create a package based on that. I'm pretty sure the gcc and build-essentials are already there (haven't ever tried to look, but have read about people developing ON the N900).

That's all for now.

Use of the front webcam.
A dedicated app for the maemo forums.
An app that makes all the widgets useable on all homescreens at the same time( right now you have to do it manually)
An extension or update for fapman so you can use it to install applications you already have in mydocs or the sd card
ability to sync facebook with your calendar
a computer app just like ps3 media server for the n900 (ps3 media server works fine, but you cant forward)
and a widget calculator (would be awesome)

gpsrecorder, gps-data-logger and gpsjinni could have that feature.
gpsrecorder, I think, is somewhat actively developed still and supports both GPS_location and cellID based location (?).

I find that apps that are endorsed by companies are always missing from Maemo. they are usually on IPhone, Android and Blackberry, but I've never seen Maemo. Gok Wan's app, myFittnessPal, banking apps, rightmove, sky+ etc. We never get a look in on those! I'm seriously considering running Nitroid just to get the apps. Not skilled in that area at all so it scareds me half to death, but I'm getting sick of it!

I'm missing

* OVI maps as in S^3 devices (with voice guides and OVI sync)
* PPTP vpn (I know it is possible with custom kernels, but I don't want to change my kernel)
* stable call recorder - Recaller needs some improvements to become such.
* Kindle
* wellness diary or similar, that could manage my diet, calories etc...
* sports tracker
* RememberTheMilk - native one

For those interested, two existing wiki pages on this topic
http://wiki.maemo.org/Applications_y...ther_platforms
http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_wish-list

Is there an alternative way we should organize this material? Most open source developers scratch an itch but sometimes will implement what is desired. Also some better organization of this information could give ideas for commercial apps.

Things I would expect in an alternate way of organizing
  • Wishlist
  • Voting
  • Alternatives Listed
  • For ports, marking of challenges, whether it be in dependencies, hw capability, or interface
  • Ranking based on Voting and status of alternatives, porting capability

Thoughts?

EDIT: Added ports comment

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

Two ideas I've had for small apps:

1. If the alarm D-bus signals allow it, I'd like a small, non-GUI application that registers itself to be called anytime the alarm goes off. Once called, the application would for a short time monitor the accelerometer for, say, a triple tap on the device. If the triple tap came, the application would dismiss the alarm. Otherwise, the app would simply close itself.

This would allow me to easily dismiss alarms while my N900 remains in my pocket. I'd appreciate that option each time it reminds me of an appointment to which I'm already driving.

2. I'd like a addition to the status menu with several buttons, a bit like the Simple Brightness Applet. However, instead of various brightness levels, the buttons on this new applet would be for different units of time, perhaps 1/2 hr, 1 hr, 1-1/2 hrs, 2 hrs, and 2-1/2 hrs. Tapping one of the times would immediately switch the phone from General profile to Silent profile and register an event with alarmd the selected amount of time in the future. The alarmd event, when it arrived, would prompt the applet to switch back to the General profile.

This would allow the phone to autimatically return to it's normal, useful, noisy self after being curtious during events such as meetings, movies, and dates.

100% agreed.
Those are the two things I miss in the 'smart' phones currently available. In particular none of them have a really useable DateBook style application (the type of thing that freed us from pen & paper diaries 15 years ago - it seems odd that 'smart' phones have taken such a giant leap backwards in this regard, when they were supposed to merge the capabilities of PDAs and make them obsolete).

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

a) I have already suggested an enhanced contacts app but didn't get much buzz around it. I really think a lot of limitations could be easily bypassed

b) Better backup. E.g., a backup application that saves user data (contacts, call logs, calendar items, etc) in a human readable format and back. This allows for partial error recovery and data merging. This could be scheduled for repeated backups.

c) If at all possible, a call UI replacement. An app could launch over the phone app and allow for slide to answer, slide to hang up, bigger pictures, animated call portraits, all kinds of neat stuff. Don't know how viable it is, but I assume that is an app like espeakcaller can be launched on call and phone speaker switcher can switch speakers then an UI app could launch and send over answer, hang up, etc.

d) Of course, games. I'd kill for a good tower defense game. After I got the new Android I didn't put it down for days.

Also, L2TP couldn't hurt.

ETA: Uuuuu, handwriting recognition.

I have servers for games
like
Battlefield badcompany 2, Left4dead, left4dead2, Leadandgold, AliensVSpredator.

I would like to see a widget or an app to check the server and how many players and the ping of the servers.

since ANDROID has these kinds of apps a while now. why cant N900 has it too?

also, Hotfile Client app to download and upload like DropBox, or atleast rapidshare client for upload and download.

better MSN client,
we need widgets that shows your status in many games and your ranks.

N900 is crap when it comes to communication and sharing with friends and gamers.

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

I think the n900 has most apps that any user could want I can see from all the previous posts that some people want improved apps but I cant say that any of the current apps dont fulfil the jobs that have to. However there are a few app I would like to see in the future.

1) I would like to see a ringtone maker/editor, something really simple like a bar that lets you chose the start time and end time of any track and then either save it as a new tone or make the phone start ringing from that point of that track.

2) Another App I would like to see is gnutella client. I dont know if theres any open source client for this but I know there was one for the symbianOS. (i dont know what the forums view is on p2p but its just an idea)

Some cross platform online games would also be pretty sweet, e.g a pool game

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

Video Editor (correct hand-shaking, for instance)

Image/Icon Editor (pixel-by-pixel, with zoom for more exact pointing; with transparency support; would be useful for cases when you want to draw icon for hildon menu or Fennec extension)

Use of the front webcam for photographs and video

An extension or update for fapman so you can use it to install applications you already have in mydocs or the sd card

a geographic alarm: to sound when approaching a specific address/place

OVI maps as in S^3 devices (with voice guides and OVI sync) (note http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=66985 )

ringtone maker/editor

Open-source replacements of Panorama and FrontView Scanner.

Panorama doesn't like vertical movements of the camera, works only with horizontal, while I would like to use both horizontal and vertical movements in one photograph to make it both higher and wider than usual photograph.

FrontView Scanner allows to select only rectangles, not triangles, not pentagon, not hexagon. It sounds as absurd, but... What about scanning triangular post stamp? Or curved sheet of paper which can be represented as hexagon?

QWERTY keyboard, which supports both portrait and landscape, has Ctrl, Fn and Shift buttons. Supports all the layouts the default vk supports.

Just improve current apps. Faster, bug free, more features, polished UI. We have load of gps apps, note taking apps, timers etc. I just see row of things half done complete / right where part that is missing is on another app that is missing again other things.

It would be awesome to have some Game development kits for the N900

The Unity3d engine was mentioned earlier and would be great to see but personally I would like to see the Platinum Arts Sandbox engine Running on N900

This is a FREE and OPEN SOURCE, yet simple open world engine that can create some fairly impressive 3D graphics and could have the potential to for us to our own games. It has already had outings on the iPhone with Cube2 (the original sauerbraten game).

Here's the demo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g44Ww...layer_embedded

I have already suggested this here too

C'mon guys! Let's get 3G Video call first (to complete the 'phone' functionality and put a stop to all those threads).

Second, I'd vote for Ovi maps with turn-by-turn navigation (at least like the regular Ovi maps on Symbian).

Someone mentioned lightsaber...I think that sounds very interesting also :D

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

1. Definitely PPTP VPN. I needed bandages for my thumbs after I had configured it using power kernel and a lot of scripting customizations (e.g. od doesnīt have the same parameters as GNU od :D ). It was a real pain to get it running although I learned a lot. I am still some sort of linux noob and havenīt figured out how to create my own user friendly packages.

2. Bluetooth HID configs and keymaps for most of the working BT keyboards. I got the Chinfai foldable one but neither does my N900 connect nor do I have a decent keymap. Diving into XFree keyboard specification gave me the creeps.

3. A full filesystem backup. I was raging mad when I had to reinstall all my applications after an upgrade to the last fremantle distribution. I would rather have restored my phone back to the previous state but I couldnīt!!! I donīt care about what is on my memory card. I care about the root filesystem.

4. All standard apps like e.g. PPTP VPN, decent BT HID and FSBackup available right from the start, included in distribution, right after you do a firmware upgrade, out of the box. When I bought my N900 I thought I was modifying a Debian Linux not writing it all myself from the scratch.

5. For the future: no so tight app certification. I dumped my N95 because I could hardly find (!) and install any application: certificate timeout. I want to play sudoku. I donīt want to spend days on finding out which signed package is still installable. I am pleased by messages that tell me about an untrusted origin of an application. I am enraged by requesters that tell me that I cannot install the application at all!

No more symbian syndrome, please!

6. Working MMS would be nice. I still didnīt dare to install the package that told me it could send and receive MMS "hopefully" :D
@all: does it work for you?

Please continue running sites like this one. When something doesnīt work the community helps. (Bandaged) thumbs up!

Re: [SURVEY:] What kind of Applications are you missing at the N900?

Hello,

I have a simple idea for a simple alarm, hope someone is up to the challenge.

Is it possible to make an application you activate on you main screen (Via widget for example), and after 5 second, or defined time, the alarm would go on if someone or something moves the phone ?

Its a rough idea with lots of room for improvement, for example:

- timer to set it of after a few seconds with password or predefined movements (this would be tough..)
- If the alarm goes off, take a picture from the front camera
- Option to simply shutdown the N900 if wrong code or movement
- Option to call for another predefined numeber, if code is wrong.

Whats your thoughts ?

Best regards
