Re: Rumor: N9 to have 1.2Ghz Atom

If I was going to place a bet here, I'd put it on Intel CPU. The reason is that MeeGo is a child of both Nokia and Intel and that Intel at some point in the future will release MeeGo devices. This means that Intel will expect to have available 3rd-party apps that were developed for MeeGo phones instantly, which is not possible if there is a different architecture.

See this thread for a related talk.

The hardware enumeration from the boot log fragment showed a lot of non-typical-PC hardware (e.g. GPS on I2C bus).

I don't think that a crappy 1,5 GHz Atom would decode 1080p in realtime at all
Depends more on the GPU, my Acer Revo R3610p (1.6GHz Atom 330 Dual Core) running XBMC plays 1080p h.264 with about 15% CPU utilisation. This is because the NVidia ION GPU it has has hardware-accelerated h.264 decoding.

I rather guess that Nokia may bring out some MeeGo Tablet, that may have an Atom processor.
Of course, thus my comment that Nokia working on Atom-based development kits doesn't necessarily have anything to do with *handsets*, tablets are probably a better target with Atom?

Seen any Apple adverts recently?

In fact, any phone or computer adverts - just this morning I saw an advert for the intel core i5, which promised me that having one in my PC would enable me to experience images like never before...

Hmmmm...

Either that, or adverts will boast a feature common to lots of devices but maybe less known, so everyone will go 'Ooooh with the xPhone I can do xxxx' so I'm going to buy one of those instead of the yPhone'...

Does this happen with windows mobile or the iPhone? Actually what seems to happen is a 'mobile version' of PC software is made, which bears little resemblance to the 'full version'

(also called the Barnum Effect after P.T. Barnum's observation that "we've got something for everyone") is the observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. This effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some beliefs and practices, such as astrology, fortune telling, Androids, iPhones, :D:D:D:D

can someone tell how the atom is different compared to snapdragon/hummingbird/tegra/orion?
Not having a dualcore in 2011, and been said it has dreamspecs...
so many questions(ram, gpu, EMMC, infraredport..will it be 3x powerfull compared to n900..)answers on 16feb

Quote one.

AFAIK they depend mostly on using images and positive interpretations of them by the audience rather than explicitly mentioning a 'promise'. You can't claim product misrepresentation when the customer is doing the interpretation not based on written claims.

This should be fine too, if the user is unfamiliar with said feature.

But I think you've missed the point of my post, which was made in reply to Andrew's.

Then why develop an ARM variant of Meego at all? Seems like a waste of resouces if they only intend to use it on x86 devices.

My prediction is that the N9 will be released late March and have an ARM CPU.

I like x86. It's a nice pocket heater :)

if (x86 compatibility($N9)) {
port('VMWare');
}
