It means they abandoned the phone they were going to release last year and they'll be releasing something more up-to-date soon.

That they have done this seems pretty obvious without an article to confirm it if you compare the originally rumoured specs for the N9 to new phones that were demoed at CES.

Why? There are already plenty of Android phones. I want an updated Maemo/Meego phone.
