gnuite.com down?

Halp!!!! I'm on the road and trying to use maemomapper for the next leg and the server seems to be down! Can I point it to somewhere else?

Re: gnuite.com down?

A lot of people seem to be having sporadic problems with the google maps urls these last few days. I am not sure what is going on. I suspect they may have implemented some sort of anti-leeching protocol or something, as I have had some map downloads cut off midstream, not want to resume and then if I switch IPs they work again...

Re: gnuite.com down?

LAst night I put in an address for directions and it came back with a trip that circumnavigated the planet twice and went to the North Pole!

Re: gnuite.com down?

I just have to say that if it's an "Anti-leeching" thing then that's %^$$ed up. I guess that's their right and all.

This is really messing me up. Fortunately I can use the GPS to get a clue as to where I'm going but I was hoping for the specificity of the route.

Re: gnuite.com down?

In case anyone else has this problem I've found a nice work around. Go to:

http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx

And follow the directions.

When you get the GPX file be SURE to set for "full" and "Track". Apparently MaemoMapper wants a track route to display for routes. Bluetooth that file to your IT and load it up. Now I can relax some.

works in a pinch, but i miss being able to build custom routes in mameo-mapper :(

Re: gnuite.com down?

I agree but since after my next stop I'm entering territory I've never driven before, I'll take it over nothing at all. But it is good that there is some kind of option. Happy the temps are dropping tomorrow for the next leg.

I hope you didn't actually follow that route! :)

The issue should be fixed... Thanks for the surprise, Google! :P

When I run Maemo Mapper these days, I only get the choice of OpenStreet maps, which seem more or less useless. How do I get back to the old map choices (hybrid, etc.)?

OpenStreetMap is the "default repository" only because it is the only repository for which I am definitely sure that it is legal to use Maemo Mapper. To use other (possibly illegal) repositories, you must either add the repositories manually or use the "Download..." button on the "Manage Repositories" dialog box.

Holy cow, Google Maps's HTML source has changed almost beyond recognition. Until I can sort this out this new obfuscation, waypoints will be unavailable. :/

Sorry for the inconvenience.

It actually wasn't so bad. I have fixed the GPX Driving Directions Web Service. Waypoints should now work.

Ugh...bummer, just when I needed to use it today. A work around is to use gmaptogpx app located here http://www.elsewhere.org/GMapToGPX/. Make sure to click on "Points" & "Track" to get the format needed for MM. Then just copy the directions and import into MM.

Yeah, I've been trying to get that javascript to run locally off of my filesystem. (I want to add a "Save Directions" Button. All that copy/paste is a pain in the a**.)

Anyone done this? If so, how did you format the URL in microb? ([EDIT] using file:/// instead of http:// works in firefox, but not on the tablet...)

cheers,
kernelpanic

Full seemed to work as well. Thanks for this tip, btw! I am off to catch a ferry to Visby Friday morning, and really wanted the directions on MM.

piotr,

1. go to http://elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx. Scroll down to Instructions, long-click the 'GMaptoGPX' link under #1 and add it to your bookmarks.
2. go to maps.google.com and get directions. From there, click your bookmark. It'll open the gmaptogpx script.
3. Use the buttons at the top to decide how many points you want in your route. (I use 'full')Then copy the GPX data from the text box and paste into a text file. Save that file with a GPX extension.
4. Open the GPX file in your mapping app.

HTH,
kernelpanic

I tried it but when i try to import it into Maemo Mapper GPX parsing error occurs. How to fix it?

@piotrek it worked for me just some minutes ago.

On the other hand, can anyone nudge me in the right direction of configuring mapper to get maps from google? Since gnuite is down, the download doesn't work :/

The parsing error means that it's not in the right form for MM. You need to click on "Full", and someone else said that "points and track" works as well. After you click on Full then copy-paste ALL of the the file into a text editor and save it.

Good luck!

GPSBabel says that there is a problem with this line <trkpt lat="50.08321" lon="20.20394"><cmt>Continue on Aleja Jana Pawła II</cmt></trkpt>. When I removed that everything worked fine. Where can be a problem?

I bet it's that funny character... What is that anyhow (phonetically)?

piotrekkowalski 2008-05-07 19:05

Re: gnuite.com down?

It is begining of the word "weed". It is phonetically like english "w" in words. I don't understand why this character is a problem because there are more Polish characters in these directions and they are being well parsed...

gnuite 2008-05-07 20:13

Re: gnuite.com down?

Maybe sure the file is in proper UTF-8 format. If it's actually in Latin 1 (ISO-8859-1), then some of the more common non-English characters may work correctly, but not all of them.

Benson 2008-05-07 20:35

Re: gnuite.com down?

Yeah, I expect it's an encoding issue of that sort. UTF-8 vs. some 8-bit encoding, though I wouldn't have known which was appropriate...

bac522 2008-05-08 13:58

Re: gnuite.com down?

Ok, I'm getting routes the normal way, but I'm finding the waypoints are totally screwed up. I get all my waypoints at the beginning for the route, looks like the problem is coming from the directions I'm getting with http://gnuite.com:8080/cgi-bin/gpx.cgi which probably means google made a change.

Re: gnuite.com down?

They did indeed make a change, and I'm working to correct the web service now. It's a pretty drastic change, but I should be able to fix it within the next hour or so.

Okay, it should be fixed. Let me know if there are any more issues.

Excellent looks a lot better. Didn't realize how much I relied on those popup waypoint messages when driving.
