Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Wonder if anyone can help - I installed FastSMSEvo after installing the CSSU (purely for the portrait T9 alpha-num input method, rather than that poxy QWERTY Maemo has built in), but I can't get it launch after a reboot - I have seen people complaining of it being slow to load (mainly due to loading all the dicitonaries) but for me, it simply refuses to.

Previously it was loading but only after dicking about with various apps first - loaded FastSMS so that I know the keyboard was loaded, then tried it in Conversations, both "To" field and main text body field, no result, Email body text field, no result, Email "To" field, result - processor going like the clappers for 3 seconds then the keyboard appeared. After that it loaded instantly with any other app that called for it.

Now, since upgrading to CSSU 12.5 it simply won't load. Are there any known conflicts that could have this effect? Is there a shell script I can run to get it to load OS wide at boot?

I used
Code:

apt-get install --reinstall fastsmsevo
and it still doesn't work. I'll try uninstalling then re-installing again and report back with edit.

[EDIT]
Nope, still the same after a complete uninstall / reinstall. Keyboard will not launch from conversations, had to go into Email to get it to launch and that's after using FastSMS to originally launch the keyboard itself.....

Nope, no joy with purge either.

Have found that if I launch FastSMS and then launch Conversations it then works consistently.

Strange, reinstalling worked for me...stupid question: have you tried reinstalling and then rebooting?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

For me the only bug is still the bit where if I restart hildon-desktop, while still in the terminal, fastsms pops up that attempted-keyboard (it's a fastsms process caused popup, but the keyboard itself doesn't load) that gets in the way. Can't click out of it. Typing "killall fastsms" gets rid of the box.

So... whenever you're free of your exams realsportscars, what do the latest versions of fastsms do that might be linked to the launching/starting of hildon-desktop?

Tried fastsmsevo, but in order to fully use it, i need more languages, such as russian. Can i expect seeing that in future updates?

The qwerty needs alternative layouts, eq. such that include ä and ö.

I noticed this bug too. Seems a few "top loaded" hildon plugins and widgets suffer from this. Wasn't sure if it was related to fastsms. Thanks for confirming it.

Those keys are already in the keyboard. The key just to the right of the "123" symbol key, with the apostrophe on it - contains accented letters.

Not all of them, of course, but a lot of them. Definitely has the two you wanted. (Also, you can change the language settings in FastSMS itself, which might mean you may be able to get different language-specific accented letters in the main layout too.)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

I'm quite back :)
I'm not going to quote everyone but I'm trying to answer to all last messages...

New Languages: I can add new latin-based languages easily, check first post in "FastSMS" thread to discover what I need. I absolutely can't add new languages(that I don't know) without support.
I'm planning to add also support to non latin languages, strating from greek, but here I need a collaborative people to understand the language...

New Layout in qwerty: As before I need support from people, but I can easily add they. A lot of people ask for something and then disappears: sorry but I only know italian and a bit of english :)

Bug@reboot: I noticed the same thing while trying to first start vkb in conversation in portrait. ATM you have to start fastsms from icon, don't close it, and then use conversation, or mail or etc as normal (fastsms will be hidden after the first use of the vkb)

Symbol: I will add this layout and also a "smile" one. I have to say that in qwerty there are few symbol still missing and while using the T9 layout you can modify plain.txt or the first part of your language.idc

hildon-desktop: I will try to manage this adding the features to autostart fastsmsevo at boot time (this may also fix the problem linked to first start in conversation) but please consider that restart hildon-desktop is not an every-day task

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Hey,

Is there any chance of that touch screen vibration when using your keyboard?

It seems to have slipped from the conversation but its still a really desirable feature.

Also, possibly as some future improvements you could:
  • Implement the option to add a new word to the dictionary
  • Add a dictionary and text prediction for the QWERTY keyboards
  • Add a settings menu applet so we can configure the Virtual Keyboard

P.s. I am going to try and get some knowledge of the settings applets and I might POSSIBLY be able to help you out with that one.

But not until I have some more free time though. Unfortunately Im swamped with college work :(

Do you mean an option to enable/disable vibration ONLY in vkb? (For example: no vibration while using touch screen in apps, but enabled while using the vkb)
However I will look on how use "tactile" features and perhaps one of my friend will join in this project, so we can speed up the work...

A menu already exists in fastsms, but perhaps you mean something different...BTW I will try to add very soon a way to access it from vkb

EDIT: yes to first point. Second one is hard to answer: I can't use the factory dictionary due I don't know how access it using Qt, but I can try to use the T9 one

Yeah, so basically. I currently have no vibration on apart from the 'tactile' plugin which the CSSU has made more useful.
I would like your keyboard to have a vibration feedback when I press the keys.
But I dont want to have vibration feedback on in other apps.
ONLY on your keyboard.

It should be a D-Bus Command but I am not sure what the command is.

I didnt realise there was settings for it in the FastSMS app. That solves my issue. I was talking about a VirtualKeyboard settings applet in the Settings area of Maemo, but if you can configure it using FastSMS then there is no point.

Looking forward to the Add Word option from your VirtualKeyboard.

Hmm, well the dictionary for the T9 in your keyboard would be perfect to use. Don't need to use the standard maemo one.

As long as we can add words to the QWERTY dictionary as well, unless it uses the exact same file as the T9 dictionary.

Yeah they are definately busy, but it might be worth dropping MohammadAG a PM asking about how to build a settings applet?

So will you look into how to get the Vibration working on your keyboard?

Would need to be

Code:

Keyboard Opened
Executes D-Bus Signal to enable touch screen vibration
Keyboard Closed
Executes D-Bus Signal to disable touch screen vibration

If it is so easy...I can add this very very soon!

EDIT: Do you know where I can find the right Dbus signal?

EDIT AGAIN: Sorry, but I thinked that you was talking about "tactile" :) I will look for "normal" vibration asap

DBus Signal For Touch Screen Vibration?

Hopefully someone will be able to tell us the DBUS signal required for this to work :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

your vkb its great, but i dont know it consider as bug or not. Everytime first type it start with capital font eventhough caps lock is disabled. While using alfa numeric and disable fastsmswrite there is not indicator " stand line " to indicate where is the locatian.
This is my request for qwerty keyboard to move from one word to another word its hard actually, so can u enable stand line with arrow below, so we can move the line by pressin the arrow and drag it similiar to android keyboard. That will be great.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

This totally hasn't been known for months or anything:
http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Jebba/DBUS#dbus-send-tick

-Edit-
Oh, and instead of using the "enable/disable" thing, the dbus-send-tick thing linked above simply makes one quick vibration - the same vibration that the system already uses for other 'tactile' responses to UI presses.

So it'd just have to be

[button press]
[vibration tick]

instead of

[button press]
[vibration on]
[button press ends]
[vibration off]

hawaii 2011-03-02 04:49

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

It would actually make more sense and be less taxing on resources to enable screen vibration while the keyboard has focus and then disable when the keyboard goes away, instead of pinning a user-generated dbus signal every time a character is selected.

As fine as dbus is with a ridiculous amount of threads passing for IPC, I'm sure it would fair better without this added usage.

I did mean that when this keyboard is opened the vibration is enabled :P

So instead of:

[vibration off]

Have this which should be less strenuous on the CPU:

Code:

[keyboard opened]
[touch screen vibration on]
[keyboard closed]
[touch screen vibration off]

If you understood what I meant originally then my apologies, just wanted to clarify it more :)

is it possible to have the keys that's normally in the sym (function+ctrl) part of the default keyboard? in particular the percentage sign..
also is there a reason the ampersand doesn't show up on the keyboard? it works but it hasa blank space on the keyboard layout.

I was hoping to use FastSMSEvo, but I think it has some problem or conflict with another vkb on my system, and I cant remember how to remove it

A long time ago, I installed this: http://blog.rburchell.com/2010/06/ma...es-we-can.html
never really used it, but it might be overriding fastsmsevo because evo doesnt appear when the vkb is called for; only this thing appears. Is it a fault of fastsmsevo or this thing? Any ideas how I can remove it and try fastsmsevo?

Also elsewhere in this thread I read the problem that fastSMS isnt showing the caret line of where new text will be inserted.. Mine's behaving like that too.. if i tap in the TO box, i see the caret |
If i tap in the write-message area, it shows briefly then disappears and doesnt come back. What went wrong?

Do you still need assistance? I'll be happy to try to submit some pictures (thrown together in paint or something) showing where each key should go, along with UTF codes for the keys, for Russian layouts. And I can try to start you off with a word list, although I'm not exactly up to date on the slang.

I'll see if I can help you implement an xkb-like customizable mapping system if I can figure out the Qt way to do so in time for it to be useful.

I'm making this post primarily because I remembered I never said this: MANUALLY restarting hildon-desktop is not a day-to-day task. There are programs that restart hildon-desktop as part of changing various related settings - there's been a demand for that since the CSSU has added so manu hildon-desktop features.

I'm gonna try to find the time to look through your source code and see if I can learn some Qt as soon as I can. I'm about to intensify my job searching as me and my GF have plans to get our own place and we definitely need an income to not completely mooch our parents. But I'll do my best to find the time to help as promised a few pages back.

Probably the fault of "both" - when two things conflict, it's kinda hard to say it's just one or the other at fault.

Also, you should always do your best to remember what everything you installed is called. Open up an app manager and search for "portrait". It should be called something like "portrait-input-method" or "portrait-virtual-keyboard". You should be able to recognize it when you see the name, it's pretty indicative of what it is. If you still can't figure out what it is let me know and I'll figure out the name for you.

Anyway, uninstall that, and reboot. If that still doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall FastSMSEvo, and reboot again.

Nothing wrong, I think it does this normally. Could be preferable to have it do it normally though. *Shrug* Also, I don't think it's called a "caret". The term I'd use for the symbol is "bar", not sure what it's supposed to be called though, you might be right.

I'm sure he's working on it, or will when he has time. I already mentioned earlier that he's got a few repeat keys he could replace with more symbols.

I have noticed this bug, Try opening conversations in landscape, and then press the text box. The keyboard will take awhile to open initially, but when it has opened.

You can then close it and you should be able to access it in portrait mode :)

It doesn't open up for me in landscape as well. How long do I have to wait before the vkb shows up? I've waited like 5 minutes so far. lol

I'd still love for the overlay window / input area to be half the size it currently is. Makes exiting and committing MUCH easier with one hand, versus reach up to a small 1/4" sized area.

Hmm, Have you tried rebooting?

Or possibly reinstalling the keyboard?

Try different apps to call it initially. For me conversations works best but Notes might be a good one to try.

See attached for picture of the recommended window preview size. You can get this by loading the VKB in landscape mode, then rotating it to portrait. It's drawn half way on the screen.

Yeah, I tried reinstalling it three times already.

Let me get something clear first. You need fastsms in order for fastsmsevo to work correct?

I tried to open the vkb while texting, but it does not work. I haven't tried it with Notes yet.
