How Many ?

Does anybody have any sort of numbers on how many N800's have been sold to date not only in the US/North America but also UK/World Wide to date and on that note any numbers on the N770 US/WW ? I'm of course not asking anyone to break any NDA's or anything like that I'm just curious as probably many of other IT users and Forum readers when we ask for new apps or progress on firmware updates or when we hear of possible new hardware about every year or year and a half or so are we (IT users) on the so called bleading edge or are we getting closer to the so called main stream user base ? Are we talking 10k-50k-100k units, 500k to 1mi+ ?

I for one really like my IT (N800) but I'd really like to see many of the issues/bugs fixed on it as well, and many of the current issues I don't feel aren't at all related to the hardware, do I think the current layout/design is perfect, not at all but many of my current devices/electronics are not perfect either but that doesn't mean I'm going to replace them every year either, I and I'm sure many others just can't afford to replace things like this every year just because there's a new model. I realize that chips get smaller and better and more efficient and that many companies make their money on hardware and not necessarily the software but it is an awful lot to ask/expect of your customers to upgrade every 10-18 months. I'm just afraid that if and when the next tablet from Nokia comes out that the N800 users will suffer the same fate that the N770 users did.

Re: How Many ?

Greetings TTgowings:

Now that is an excellent question to ask, how many N800 were sold world wide?

If Nokia has sold 1 million plus, then more development will be done for the N800.

I think because of BlogSites like this one and many others giving a very good review of the N800, sales are hot.

Although in my country Canada, no retail store stocks the N800, it maybe a wait and see what happens strategy.

I hope someone finds a source somewhere on the net to know how many N800 are out there in the world.

Regards Robert

Re: How Many ?

I have no idea how many sales it amounts to, but on Amazon the N800 is currently listed as no. 2 in 'Top Sellers in Laptops & Notebooks', after Apple Macbook but before HP Pavilion, another macbook, and sony vaio.

Re: How Many ?

Maybe we could find out using a little bit of statistics. :

During the second world war the allied forces used statistics to make an assessment on the amount of bombs and material Hitler Germany produced.
They did this by decoding the serial numbers on broken parts that remained after a battle.

All the Internet tablets have a unique serial number that is the same as its Wifi MAC address. Maybe we could decode the number and link it to the "n-th" produced N800 ?
Does anybody know more about the Mac address and what the different parts mean? (I assume that some part might tell me what wifi chip is used or part of the number is linked to the manufacturer? But I don't know)

If we know what the number is of the produced N800 of a random group of owners, than we can apply statistics to estimate the total amount. (I will be happy to do the calculations, but I don't know how to get the production number out of the serial/mac code)

This is assuming the random draw of users in a representative group . One might argue that the average number of early adopters is higher among Internet Tablet Talk members than the normal public, so that might influence the estimate.
