Nokia N800 vs Dell Axim x51v
 

Hi all,

I've decided to sell my Axim X51v and get the Nokia N800 which will be arriving next week. I felt that the Nokia would be better for alot things I needed the Axim X51v for ie. better web browsing, nice big screen, Flash, streaming online video, it also connects to my GPSlim GPS receiver for Navicore software. Plus I like that its open so you can port. It also cost the same price as the Axim, back when I first bought the Axim. For me I feel that the Axim will slowly die, because no OS upgrades or any support from Dell. The things I regret from selling my Axim is because it had infrared (great for remote control) and this huge software base that keeps growing on WM (I particularly miss software like TomTom which I feel is alot better than Navicore) The Axim also has a faster processor(624 MHz Xscale) and 3d graphics card(better for the occasional game).

I'm really not sure if I made a good decision yet.

What do you think is better and why? Please don't JUST say its Linux, I know, Linux is great, but Linux and...

Have both at the moment, but the X51v is sitting on the counter.

PRO:The N800 has a bigger, "prettier" screen, lighter, battery life is about equal to the X51v with the exteneded battery. WM is stagnate(sp) for the X51v but Maemo is still progressing (although at a snails pace, to the general public).

CON: WM has MUCH better program base. A program to do most anything you want is available. Unlike the N800 where one must depend upon the graceous programming skills of a relative few programmers.

These are MY opinions for MY usage but should give you something to think about.

that is something to think about. Ideally being a programmer would be beneficial when having the N800 were as like you said WM would have an application that did something you'd want already. Thanks for the input. Do you think you'll be selling your Axim?

I will probably keep the Dell until the 3 main programs I use are duplicated on the N800 at the same level.

The Dell also plays movies better. Which hopefully will improve.

Yes, the Axim line is dead and Dell has as much said so. It was the best PDA for along time.

I talked with one ISV (Independent Software Vendor) that makes software for handheld devices and gives it away -- they are not open source, but their program binaries are FREE. I asked if they would be interested in developing a version for the N800 (they provide free binaries for a LOT of handheld platforms). They looked into it and got back to me and said that the software license agreement in the Nokia 800 development kit was too ambiguous -- they were afraid that they would have to give away their source code.

I would like for open source, non-open source, and for-profit entitities to all be able to easily make software for the N800 and use whatever business model they prefer. This is the way to get the largest software base.

When I had my Axim, the thing that I though was really keeping it back was the os. The hardware kicks pretty much any other pda out there's ***. The only reason I returned it was I really didn't like WM, that's why I went to the Zaurus in the first place, the Axim just reminded me. The Nokia is fun to play with, and that's about all I see using it for. I'm not that impressed with the on screen keyboard, and I don't like carrying around the bluetooth one I bought for it. If it had a real keyboard I'd probably use it more. That's the one thing I like about the Zaurus, they all have a keyboard. My current one is the 3100, so it's a clamshell model. I can type on it pretty good. Not as fast as a full sized keyboard, but fast enough to not annoy myself. The 6000, which I had before that has a slide out keyboard, and isn't as big. Still useful, but slower. Now if we had the same amount of software for the Nokia as the Zaurus, that would be way cool.

I still have my Axim X30.

I absolutely love my 770 for web browsing. That's what it was designed for and it shines. Now, I've tinkered with it and boot from a 2GB card so that I can install other stuff. Maemo mapper is really cool. However...


The axim makes it really easy to install apps on the SD card. I have a 2GB card in it holding several extra apps and the internal memory is spared. The axim has easy battery access. Batteries are swappable and I have a spare charging in the cradle all the time. Extended batteries are even better. The built in web browser stinks, but it's really fast for simple web pages. I can't even tell that the wireless is only 11b because pocket IE renders simple HTML so quickly. It bogs down on pretty web pages that the 770 can handle with ease, but there are times when I feel like the 770 is working hard for little payoff. The axim runs a free geocaching program called Cachemate. It's just one example of the tons of available apps for the ppc or WM platform. It also runs a free version of Google Maps which (sorry gnuite) blows the doors off Maemo Mapper in terms of performance and features. The way it loads and unloads map tiles is really slick. You don't store a huge library of maps, so you just have to be online all the time. I hardly matters because maps load so quickly. It's only drawback is that it doesn't plot your position from a bluetooth GPS. You can run Cachemate and Google maps at the same time and jump between the two apps. Also, I got a Dell portable folding keyboard for the X30 off ebay for $6 and it is sweet. It's almost like a laptop keyboard and the X30 plugs right onto it. Then, there's the IR port. I don't use it all the time, but it comes in handy when I need to move files between the axim and an old (nokia) mobile phone.

I won't be getting rid of either gadget any time soon...I think I'm attached to both of them.

If that's the case then I don't think it blows the doors off Maemo Mapper. I download the set of maps I need (one relatively large view and a set of detailed maps for the location I'm going to) and I don't need a network connection again.
