Uktube Out! Smooth playback of youtube on 770/N800

I have just made an application, UKTUBE. It allows you to play youtube clips on your n800 smoothly in fullscreen mode. It's total sweetness. Also, files are stored so that you can play them later on as well.

Read the blog entry, install the app and finally feel that your n800 is web 2.0 compliant (at least for the youtube part).

Oh, the app install instructions are in the blog.

Does it work with google video?

konttori 2007-06-21 10:00

Re: Uktube Out!

Nope. Not yet. OTOH, it's python, so, someone should be able to make it work on google pretty easily.

I just updated the blog to contain a youtube demonstration video. Man. I'm so excited. This is a great tool. Download it now!

Maybe in the future. This is just the beginning. But I'll be on vacation for a few days, so this is all there will be for a few days.

Konttori nice idea but i doont like the fact thatt its .flv and can only be playd in mplaayer.Pesonally hate mplayer because it crashs my nokia or it will distort everything on the sceen.

Re: Uktube Out!

Forgot to mention that the app works just as well on 770 as on N800.

Re: Uktube Out!

It always appears to get stuck at about 3600k regardless of the video.

konttori 2007-06-21 11:34

Re: Uktube Out!

Did you install mplayer? Because it needs that to play the clip.

zerojay 2007-06-21 12:20

Re: Uktube Out!

Yep, mplayer was already installed. The problem is that it would get stuck downloading at about 3600k each time. The full videos were always around 10000k. It would just appear to get stuck at 3600 or so. Wasn't able to get it to play anything at all yet.

Re: Uktube Out!

I have bee able to get 15 MB clips play just fine. Might just be that the UI ha jammed. Have a look at mmc1 and see if the file keeps getting bigger even after the stall. The UI was made in a hurry and does not work too well. If possible, post a link to a file you had problems. I might have the time to take a look

Wow. We are getting closer and closer to a solution where people won't even know there was previously a problem!

Great stuff. Can't wait till you have a chance to take this to the next level as you envision.

Nice Job on UKTUBE. I like it. Before, jerky, out of sync YouTube videos. Now, the video is sync'ed and I actually am enjoying YouTube on my N800. I'm a smilin'!

Am I the only one? When I click the 3rd link of the post on UK blog, it installs the media center (vers. 1.3), not UKtube :-/ Any idea? TIA.

Hey Laurent,

You may have been caught out by the same thing I was when installing the 'Media Centre' application to a directory other than 'Extras', namely, that the UKTube programme is placed under the 'Extras' directory regardless! Have a peek at the programmes under this directory and hopefully you'll see it.

Very nice idea.... but one small complaint.....the video seems to be losing some frames when all 3 applications... web, ukmp and mplayer work simultaneously.....but when i close all other applications and open it directly with the saved file using m player..... it plays perfect....any thoughts???

Yeah i also noticed that you must close all apps and then run mplayer for flawless playback. Btw file rename option would be nice because downloaded flvs are something like QwqtrG23asfasS.flv

Better than nothing but i still want optimized Flash 9 and Opera 9.

Great application. One remark: i live in the Netherlands and the youtubu url gets changed to nl.youtube.com. When i paste that url into uktube it exits without a message. When I change nl into www it works. Maybe something the application can do automaticaly.

Yes, it is exactly what has happened to me ;-) I've noticed it after the 2nd try.
Thx all for your help!

Here it doesn't work. Install works fine, but when i want to run the file, it shows the paste your link screeny. I paste and click show video--> program crashes. I have mplayer installed on my n800 and the python library, i think. Any ideas?

I found out what my problem was. The SD card that the program writes to was nearly full.

Good! I'll try that one

I'll try to fix this tomorrow morning along with the installer bug (the forced extras).

Speed problems while playing are probably related to you having flash support active on the browser. It's probably sucking some processor cycles from the mplayer, which results in some jitter in the playback.

Re: Uktube Out!

A suggestion.. allow us the ability to choose where to download the files to. I don't want them going to a memory card that is full (which was the reason why it didn't work before).

Re: Uktube Out!

New version is out now:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/downloa...-uktube0.2.deb

It handles youtube clips better than before (seems to download all clips while the previous version had problems with some of the clips).

Files are now stored with the video title instead of the youtube id. Much easier for the archived files.

nl.youtube.com and others are now converted to use www.youtube.com address.

Video playback is now smoother than before and it uses the default mplayer config (you can seek and stuff now).

Files are now stored in mmc1/Videos or mmc2/Videos.

UI stalls just a little less than before ;) - still, don't press the download button twice!

Can you make this a desktop applet? It could look like the Google-search, only with Youtube logo.

Wow!!! This a great application program. I just have one question as far as using the mplayer. How do you create playlists? & How do you play them randomly on the N800? I'm a newbie to mplayer. I did a search looking for clues on this site and found an interesting thread but I could not get it to work. Could someone please help me step by step? I would love to play videos randomly using mplayer? Thanks.

Works great. For some reason it stores the moview on my external card, but that is ok.

Re: Uktube Out!

New version coming tomorrow will also include a cropped mode (to get 16:9 movies with black borders to play really in full screen) and faster downloads. Also, it will include a delete-after playback mode which my wife suggested.

Re: Uktube Out!

Just out of curiousity, I'm not a youtube watcher myself and I know its proof of concept and all.

But wouldn't it be nice to build a little aggregator to parse the rss feeds you can get from youtube and have the links within the feeds pass the url onto UKTube ?

I think I'm right in thinking that the feeds from youtube contain the links you paste into UKTube.

eg. Top Favourite Feed : http://youtube.com/rss/global/top_favorites.rss

Just a thought, any feed reader creators out there wanna parse some xml

Dave

UKTUBE 0.3 is now out. Greatest feature is 16:9 video playback.
Read more on my blog:
http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.co...be-03-out.html

@ukki: can't make python applets yet, so nope.
@djasmith: rss aggregator may be on its way at some point, just not yet.
@bnk: Beats me. I'm not too familiar with mplayer. Maybe you can make a pls file of the items and open that in mplayer.

Re: Uktube Out!

If you have trouble installing the app, download the deb first to your device and install from the deb. garage.maemo.org is behaving weirdly and at least some people have had to download the deb before installing it.

Re: Uktube Out!

Youtube is in the process of changing all of their clips to a new format, which the Apple iPhone is using. Will this have any impact on N800 use ability good or bad?

zerojay 2007-06-26 20:41

Re: Uktube Out!

It's not a format the N800 supports, so neither.
