Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Recently I listed my N900 on ebay here http://bit.ly/myebayitems , hoping to sell it and get an N8. I have been debating over this for a year now. I like the N900, but after a year of using it, my main issues with it are its too bulky, and I really want a phone now, not a mobile computer. But the N900 has so many great features. I would like to hear from a community of N900 experts. What do you think I should do? dump the n900 for the n8. Or keep the n900?

I voted keep the N900, but if you need to change a phone due to some problems, then I suggest getting the E7.

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Keep the N900
The N8 only is better in camera |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
keep your n900 because its more durable than n8 the plastic part can be easily damage if you drop it... im telling you this because my bro-in-law use my sisters n900 and they drop that more than 50X and you wont even see a big scratch and then he bought the n8 after a month it got drop 2x the hdmi part is crack already and the plastic part of the bezel is full of dents...

I can't imagine otherwise why someone would keep dropping (>50X) the N900 or any other phones??? |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I played with an N8 and wasn't impressed at all. uter **** and the browser is awful.
|
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
N8 is only cool because it's used in "Tron Legacy" ;)
What do you think is better on N8? The browser(s) on the N900 is/are the best and thats the most important thing for me. N8 only have a better camera and hdmi out instead of tv out...and no nice hw-keyboard like n900/e7 |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
No, do NOT get an N8. I work for an Australian telco dealing with complaints, and IMHO - it's the next N97. And I don't mean simply chronologically, but problem-wise as well. A browse of the comments under the specs for the N8 on gsmarena.com will reveal all.

Keep you're N900......my mate has an N8 and although it's ok, it does feel like a toy compared to my N900.

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Well, I have both N8 & N900.
I prefer using the N900 for texting, internet access and day-to-day use because of the hardware keyboard.. The N8 lacks this- and I personally love the N900's keyboard too much.. N8 is great.. It has a great camera, nice apps/games and 'proper' support from Nokia (well until now anyways).. The OS is still 'old', but apparantly new UI and features are on the way... but as I said, the N900 has a keyboard, a better OS (more powerful...) and a community which you can always refer too... I use my N8 as a second phone- mainly for taking pictures, OVI maps and games, but the N900 is my real phone/mobile computer. |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I recently pulled the usb port out of my n900 and was told it couldn't be repaired, even under warranty. After a bit of a kick off to vodafone, they offered me an n8 so I said ok. I have since sent the n900 off for repair after being told it can be fixed and should be covered. Only after using another not so smart phone do you realise quite how brilliant the n900 is. N8 problems. Crap browser, I mean truly crap, no open link in new window, mobile instead of desktop sites, horrible ui. Camera has built in compression, 1mb pics from 12mp sensor? This can be overcome with a mod which does make the camera brilliant. Hdmi is not that much better than video out. I really miss the hardware keyboard. You think the maemo email client is bad? And last, apart from a few admittedly good games, the app store is useless compared to maemo extras, testing and dev. No tv guide, no stellarium. And it's only 16gb. Wait till symbian pr 2 comes out and see if they improve the browser, if not wait, you will be disappointed. I really hope they fix my n900, I now really appreciate how good it is.

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Don't give Nokia any more of your money, they make shoddy products and the N8 is a prime example of their garbage output over the preceding few years.
I suggest plugging for one of the giant HTCs (HD2, HD7 or Desire HD). I have the HD2, and you can flash Desire's Android ROM to nand as you can WinMo7. Both run perfectly, and you have a choice of flavours, including the various Desire roms as well as os without HTC Sense. Hard wearing, durable, GOOD LOOKING and USABLE, decent battery life (keeps up with the current handsets in that regard), decent price. |

My wife has an N8 and it's a pretty good device. The actual phone functions are the best you can get and it's also a handy little media beast.
What I like best about it is its media center capability via hdmi-out. |

I posted this in another thread but it still holds true:

I did the change from N900 to Nokia N8, just got it few days ago (company bought for us) and I am glad with it. Even though N8's browser infuriates me at times I hope that with the new update things will get better.http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...957#post922957 |

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Thanks for the suggestions. It is obvious that the majority of this community would keep their N900s. The n900 is a powerful device. But for some reason I am eager to get the N8. I have been a Nokia fan since 1996 and have always tried to get the latest Nokia products as soon as possible. I guess I am an addict. :p :)
Good news for international buyers. The phone is no longer only restricted to US Buyers, it is now open to international buyers as well http://bit.ly/myebayitems |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
The limited ability to customize the n8 home screen/widgets is a big let down after using the n900, imo. You can only put 6 widgets or so on each screen and they must go in a given grid format (6x1 in portrait and 2x3 in landscape, i believe).

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
If you want to switch to the N8 at least wait until PR2.0 for it is out since it's supposed to be a pretty big update.

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
get both :p
seriously, they both serve different purposes. it's like deciding to get a van or sedan for your car. they both have each pros and cons so let see what you need. if you're a typical phone call, sms and camera guy, sell your N900 and get N8 right away. but if you're computer geek who rarely has phone call (seriously, use N900 to phone call is the last thing I wanna do with my N900. I got my other phone for daily phone call and texts), stick with N900 or wait for any meego devices, sell N900 and get that meego thing :) |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I bought two N8s in late December, intending to give one to my brother as a gift... but I unboxed one N8, played with it for a couple hours, and just managed to get it back in the mail the same day for an Amazon return :)
The hardware is mostly nice, minus the silly plastic doors for SIM, microSD, and HDMI slots, and I'm guessing that they opted to leave the USB slot uncovered, just to keep the silly plastic doors count @ 3 :D And I agree with a few other posters in this thread... web browser is awful, Contacts, Conversations, and unified inbox is a joke compared to the N900, and Symbian^3 just seemed a bit silly and inconsistent, with a mix of 'Exit', 'Done', 'Cancel', etc... to dismiss dialogs, and some settings are buried in submenus, control panels, etc...... nowhere near the well-conceived UI of the N900. I was really looking forward to the N8, giving the touchscreen-only (no keyboard) phone a shot, for Swype and some other interesting apps... but I wasn't impressed with the N8 at all. Maybe PR2.0 will breathe some life into Symbian^3 with some real improvements (namely the awful web browser), but I may be more interested in the E7 if/when it shows up in the US as the final chance to give Symbian^3 another chance. I think the N9 is the more likely next purchase for me, if the N9 actually shows up at all w/Meego. |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I have both the N900 and the N8. I use them for different things. There are some things you can not do on the N8. Browse the web with the full desktop experience for one. The lack of a hardware keyboard is another item. In the N8's favor the virtual keyboard doesn't go on a garble-a-thon everytime you use it like the N900 does.
The N8 is a great phone, text, camera device. If you want to do some real web work, real computing the N900 is the preferred device. As I've stated in this forum before, if I lost the N8 I wouldn't run out and replace it. Last week I bought a back-up n900 for just in case. |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
In my view now we've got CSSU support the N900 is miles better than the N8, as given the promises Meamo had about Ovi maps etc I would make sure PR2.0 actually arrives before getting an N8 as the whole symbian OS may get scrapped depending on what Elop as to say on the 11th.
If you want to move away from a N900 for a "real" smartphone the Nexus S looks impressive and at least you will get regular Android updates for a couple of years or you could wait a few months for the Motarola Atrix as that amybe a real step up from the N900? |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I would be very wary to invest in Symbian now. Keep the N900 until Nokia announces the bi-annual drop of a steady plan within a week or so.

I would certainly choose the N8 over any of the Android devices I have tried, but of course there is The Big Announcement on Friday, though I very much doubt Symbian will be scrapped. |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I have both.
Hardly any overlap in capabilities/features. Both get carried around and used. Use N8 as: -Main phone (i can actual answer a call the 1st time i try) -Camera - simple amazing (missed having N82 camera and fed up of bad quality N900 photos). -GPS nav is great (im in europe though). -Quick office viewer free (functionally poor but at least it's provided). -Symbian looks basic but is smooth (no intermitent slow downs) Use N900: -For everything else. -Even after all this time I still can't believe how good the browser is. Only problem is you need a large pocket and 2 power sources to charge up. I wouldn't swap it though, as you will get as irritated by the N8's perculiarities as you may have done with the N900. I only wish that Nokia had the foresight to combine the features of both phones - particularly the camera and xenon flash which no other highend handset has. |

I currently have both, and I say no.. I mean if you've got used to Maemo.. you will miss a lot of the things that the N900 can do.
I have both phones so I am enjoying the best of the two.. :) |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
I have both and i say no,personally i think it was a mistake to buy N8 because im used to N900 and when im using N8 i feel the outdated Symbian OS a lot. When PR 2.0 comes out maybe i change my idea but at this time N8 if far behind(only in camera is better).

Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
forgot to mention the connections manager is awful compared to the n900s and battery life is not much better with no option of swapping batterys.

My Nokia N900 sold on ebay today for $285 plus $50 shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MESOX:IT
I just bought its replacement, The Nokia N8, on Amazon today for only $350. It arrives on friday. I'm excited. :) |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
The fact that you are considering switching to a Nokia N8 means your heart is not in the Nokia N900 and for that reason - good luck.
They are totally different devices (symbian versus maemo). I have had the Nokia N8 before on a trial and it was like stepping back in time. In terms of size, well the first thing that struck me with the N8 is how solid it felt, but at the same time it's long and thin and I nearly dropped it a few times. It's an odd shape. Symbian seemed old (not that it is), and I missed the application updates that I got on the N900. Not having a keyboard for me was a major factor, and a problem as I tweet and blog a lot and even Swype on the N8 didn't make this easier. Application wise, well there is just so much more on offer with the N900. There is no chance I could ever consider the N8 over the Nokia N900. No chance at all! |
Re: Should I switch my N900 for an N8!
Got my N8 today. I'm not disappointed. But I miss my keyboard from the N900. :(
The N8 feels great. It is by far the best Symbian platform I have ever seen. It feels good holding a phone in one hand after being two handed on the N900 for a while. :) Nice piece of technology. The games are excellent too especially Need for Speed. The phones sensor is more responsive than the N900. |
