[Announce] SMS Bomb: Mass SMS Sender

UPDATE: This application is currently in extras-testing. Please test it, and vote for it so it can move to the extras repository!

This application sends a specified number of sms messages to a phone number with a specified delay between each message. It supports several different sms services, including carrier sms, and google voice (using qgvdial).

------------------------------------------------------------

http://maemo.org/packages/view/smsbomb/

It should be available in extras-devel right now, and requires qgvdial to send sms messages via google voice (I did not include this as a dependency, and I do not check for it when the program starts).

Phone numbers should be entered in the +1555123456 format (with +1 being replaced by your appropriate country code).

Please leave any feedback / suggestions that you may have.

Feature Requests:
  • Contacts access
  • Flash SMS - complete

------------------------------------------------------------

Be very careful when sending large numbers of sms messages. It is very possible that your carrier (or google voice) may have a problem with you sending large numbers of messages.

I created this application purely for entertainment purposes, so please note the warning below:

Please note: I am not responsible for what you do with this application. It is purely meant for research purposes, and should not be used to harass, intimidate, or otherwise bother other people. I am also not responsible for loss of service, or any fees associated with using this program.

Thanks to sakya for smssend.

Works great, it can be very funny :D
Maybe that you can contact the developper of smssend for integrating the multi-send option to smssend, and make smsbomb a GUI for it, which depends on smssend :)
Also, for the setUID command, you can make it part of the deb postinst/postrm (to see with smssend deelopper).

No, it isn't. There's nothing to research. The technology is already well understood. We all have enough sense to comprehend the predominant reaction when receiving a whole truck load of unsolicited text / email / junk mail / whatever. It ain't cool.

I don't want to sound like the old guy that yells "Get off my lawn" but you know as well as I that this application was created to cause irritation.

With just a few tweaks it can also be made to send spam to a whole range of numbers, not just a single recipient. While it's simplistic to script up a repeating text message, actually doing so and then giving it to the masses is perhaps not a good idea.

The section for the recipients number is not long enough. its only 10 figures long where as a normal british number with +44 at the begining then mobile number is 12.

It looks like you got an older build. The newest version (0.2.0-5) fixes this, and allows up to 15 digits.

Re: [Announce] SMS Bomb: Mass SMS Sender

Meh, I say this should be given to the masses, just as Aircrack-NG and so onr. If everyone had to reinvent all the tools they want that might conceivably be misusable, humanity would take far longer to make substantial progress.

It's just as dangerous as giving the masses pen testing tools. Oh, except while for every legitimate pentester there's probably an instance of misuse of the tool, if these tools were not public, they would still end up in the hands of the seriously dangerous misusers, but in the hands of far fewer legitimate ones.

You need to enable the extras-devel repositories (see the wiki), and then install smsbomb.

Do you have smssend installed (it is listed as a dependency, so it should have installed automatically). Try running smssend in terminal, and make sure it is.

Can you launch this program from the command line, and let me know what it says when you try to send messages? It is possible that this is an issue with smssend (you could also try sending a message directly using smssend, and let me know if that works).

I don't have an unlimited texting plan (I use google voice), so I haven't done much testing of the SIM option. Has anyone else had success?

EDIT: Make sure you have 0.2.0-5 installed. There were some builds before that that didn't work. Update your catalogs, and then upgrade your applications.

Most carriers support email based sms sending, which I am looking into adding.

I sort of expected some people to react like this. I think you are blowing this out of proportion. It would be easier to write a new script to send out spam (eg: a simple bash script attached to smssend). And yes, some people are going to use this to annoy other people, but all other major cell phones have similar programs, and it obviously hasn't become a problem.

If anyone started spamming whole groups of numbers, I can almost guarantee that they would get in trouble with their carrier. This program doesn't do anything ground breaking, it just puts a pretty gui over something 5 lines in a bash script could accomplish (much like the aircrack guis do).

Re: [Announce] SMS Bomb: Mass SMS Sender

An interesting feature would be to send class0 SMS (or flash SMS)
With recent phones, the phone displays the text as a pop-up, without saving it nor showing the sender. On older phones the message is showed normally.
This is how it look on the iphone:
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/9259/imagedc.jpg

It also works on N900 (A member showed a screenshot of a received message and it is displayed on pop-up too, I don't have that post)

The question is does the telephony stack on N900 allow to send class0 sms without heavily hack it ?

Edit: found the thread, it seem that the N900 displays sender and date:

Can you add contacts access? So we don't have to type the number every time using.

I'm German and i got unlimited SMS per month, i would help you testing if you want, also have other phones so i can "spam" myself while testing without annoy s.o. else^^

Yes, it seems to be possible to send flash sms using pnatd, I'll add this option to smssend. ;)

I'd like to think I'm pretty easy going, I don't think I'm blowing this out of proportion, but it's definitely possible. If I could ask what might be a legitimate use for such an application?

I don't think the comparison with aircrack is quite fair, there are a substantial number of legitimate uses for that, same with nmap, etcetera, though I understand what you are saying. It's a tool, it's how you use it.

Please don't mistake me for denigrating your effort, I'm not doing that at all, quite the opposite given the rarity of developers, I'd say anything written for the N900 is better than nothing written for it :-)

Just earlier in this thread someone said they used it to wake up their son, I think. I do think that that's a bit of an annoying use, and I have my own opinions about parental involvement in kids lives and kids simply accepting parental control, but that's beside the point - assuming the reason for doing so was a good one, sending message spam in bursts to another phone allows you to get people's attention who otherwise wouldn't notice one or two phone messages going off.

I've had plenty of cases where I was either worried about someone's wellbeing or needed someone to give me some bit of information relevant to an urgent decision, and they didn't have their phones within easily-audible reach, or weren't paying attention. Now, I'm not thinking sending hundreds of messages to one phone in such a case is okay. But sending 5-10 in 30-60 second intervals would be nice. It gets you more phone rings than calling might, and unlike calling or manually texting, it's something you can fire off and then put your N900 in your pocket until you get a response. More likelyhood they'll notice.

Also, I just thought of what could legitimately be considered 'research'. With phone networks being as black-boxed as they are from the users, this really helps you measure something like SMS-network throughput - both in terms of speed (I send 30 messages, one-per-minute; check time stamps later on receiving phone to see when they came in), and how likely a message is to just 'vanish' into the dark web that is cell phone networks - I've had plenty of instances of messages from my partner (girlfriend doesn't properly describe relationship, but we're not legally married or engaged either) to me or from me to my partner just never made it to the other phone.

Of course, open-source telephony + Phone-equivalent of NMap would probably be even better for such purposes, but people aren't working to make that a reality nearly as much as they should.

I don't want this thread to turn into a huge argument, and I do understand where you are coming from. I debated whether or not I should release this, but decided to so I could figure out how to package and release programs in the repositories.

The main reason I wrote this application was to teach myself how to use qt designer and python. It was an idea that popped into my head, and it seemed very straightforward to implement.

It's more for entertainment purposes (haha, I sent you ten text messages) than for actual malicious uses (I sent you thousands of messages, and your bill is going to be huge), but in the end people can use it for whatever they see fit.

A 5 line bash script can do the same thing this script does. All this script does is slightly lower the entry bar.

Can you send the same message to multiple users using Google Voice in qvdial?

Contacts integration would be great or a way to select multiple contact from the contact app and fire an announcement :D

smsbomb doesn't start up. Maybe it's not working for PR 1.3.

I've smssend & qgvdial installed but when starting smsbomb it tries to load the gui then just close itself. Doesn't show any error or something. :(

1 ) smssend is already installed along side with smsbomb , as it's a part of the dependency as you said .

2) smssend runs in terminal and i'm able to send single messages using it .

I've used : smssend -s -n +91(thenumber):+91(numberagain) -m "text"

the message was sent and i've received it.

3) I'm in India , i don't think google voice and is only available in the U.S as far as i know .

4) I have an unlimited texting plan , though i dunno if it allows me to send bulk sms's .

5) i have 0.2.0-5 installed

So i'm sure i'm not doing anything wrong yet .

@xur17 , I just got an update for smssend 0.1-5 or something , this one i think fixed the issue for me with bombing sms's

Thanks a lot for voicing my concern :)

So SMS bomb for N900 now works with Airtel 3G

So, let me get this straight, you can send hundreds of sms's to the same number right? This really couldn't have been timed better.

Now, anyone got Stephen Elop's mobile number? ;)

I wrote the aircrack gui and I think it was the same reason as him. I just did it to learn a bit of python and PyQt. I released a script first, but so many people had trouble that i just decided to have a go at a GUI

Your dbus command to send messages using google voice made that part easier than getting sim based messages working.

I do agree that people need to be carefull about getting their google voice account banned. I have sent groups of 10 or so, but I would imagine sending hundreds or thousands would cause a problem. Just be carefull.

I am planning on adding the ability to send messages via emails (so it would be free), but I have to figure out what the best way is to implement that.

The flash option is also on the todo list. The creator of smssend mentioned that he will add that, so I will probably wait until he adds that.

smssend has flash support.

Anybody has been able to use `watch -n20 "smssend $arguments"` for a long time now.
