Not for the apt-cache command, but 'YES' for the apt-get command.
This is a wild guess, but you may try if installing ffmpeg resolves the codec issue
Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install ffmpeg

Which repositories do you have enabled? Did you 'apt-get update' before?
Are you using extras-testing and/or extras-devel?

both of them enabled.

updated now, and seems like it will install ffmpeg. I have done update before last try (may be 2-3 hours ago), so didn't update again just before apt-get install ffmpeg.

edit : result is same..

Okay, solved.

To who has problems with video playing, try using stock kernel.

I was using 250-900 Mhz, it had problem. Stock kernel was ok. Tried 125-1000 and it worked! Even 125 Mhz is an avoided one, it worked. Something mysterious happens in my N900 it seems. :) Worths trying. :)

edit: definately something mysterious happens, can't play vids again.
