We need Viber on N900
hey guys,
Viber is competing with Skype at the moment. Is there a way to get Viber on our N900 so that we can make free calls to people other than skype. If we need to do something to make the developer to port it to N900 then please advise. |
Re: We need Viber on N900
i dont need viber. msn/skype/icq/etc. is enough

|
Re: We need Viber on N900
yeah if only we have the source code.
|
Re: We need Viber on N900
If it's such a badass thing, why it doesn't even have an article about it on Wikipedia?
|
Re: We need Viber on N900
Oh god, please don't port it. Am I the only one who got spammed by their iTool friends with automated text messages saying "Hi join Viper, free phone calls on your mobile"
The only reason Viber is picking up is because it works better than Skype on iCrap devices which can't multi task to save their life without blowing through battery. |
Re: We need Viber on N900
Wow, it's like skype, but better with less functionality, only available on a few devices and a 1/100th of the userbase!
Sarcasm aside, seem like a very closed source thing, so if you want it you'd have to ask the developers at Viber Media Inc |

Re: We need Viber on N900
Regarding the issue of "rich multimedia" clients like Viber and WhatsApp, it seems to me that the incumbent operators start to get concerned about these applications taking a big dent in their SMS-Voice revenues.
They are all commited to a new type of applications called RCS-e (Rich Communications Suite - enhanced). Google for it to know more about it. There are many RCS-e clients from many vendors (including Nokia, Ericsson and others), and I think it would be nice to port them to maemo. Some of them are open-sourced as specified here before... http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=70433, altough I think this doubago stuff is a bit outdated. Anyway I think an RCS client ported from linux to maemo would be nice and expand the lifecycle of the product. Regards. |
Re: We need Viber on N900
I dont know why people start talking about the things they dont know.
I am sure all of the above who dont like viber are actually the ones who have never seen/tried it. I can keep my N900 for some more time if I get Viber on it :) |
Re: We need Viber on N900
I am so sorry If I will be mean to some of you guys but I cannot stand anymore and not say something !!
I really don't care anymore of those mambo jambo geek bullshits. We all wants our life to be simple why maemo developers haven't still developed Viber or even SIRI ? Probably just because they don't have paid to do something ok I understand that, what I don't understand is why they think are the smartest ones ? |
Re: We need Viber on N900
I think if N9 had Viber , N900 will have .
|
Re: We need Viber on N900

|
Re: We need Viber on N900

|
Re: We need Viber on N900
better develop Wechat for N900 and N9... much more functional compared to Whatssap and Viber...
|
Re: We need Viber on N900
its not possible and i'm afraid it never will be. for others out there Maemo 5/N900 is dead. N900/Maemo 5 is alive only for this community and hardcore N900 users.

Most hideous example is the Viber port on Symbian. They get the contacts for free. The user gets nothing but an IM client, no voice communication like on iPhone whatsoever. Ok, if you are too lazy to put contacts in your list, the system will do that for you. But at what price - give up all your friends contact info for your own convenience? Nice to have all possibilities open on N900, but frankly, why support them? |
Re: We need Viber on N900
Viber is one of those sellout services that belong in the world of Android and Apple. They sell your privacy for a cheap service. Though I with great hesitation threw away my privacy when I chose webmail in the mid '90s.
We throw away our privacy by opting in to using mobile phone service and we discard it with email, facebook, and twitter. Our habits, purchases, and search terms on Amazon and eBay are commodities we trade for good and sometimes even crappy deals. Nobody could be bothered to include usable crypto plugins for email that we could get our non-geek friends to use and almost nobody could be bothered to implement something radical like freenet. As for sending to a server in Israel even if the Mosad has a backdoor you are getting less snooped than if you route packets through the US, UK, or commonwealth where the entire raw throughput is stored in bulk rather than passed on by request. Israel just doesn't have the unlimited funds the US and to a lesser extent the UK does even if it wanted to. I remember a day when a court order was required to tap a phone line, now it just requires a hunch for the interested US or UK agency to to access the already universally tapped stored information. Maemo was always a dead end as seen on the N770, N800, N810, and N900; too much freedom (as in beer and as in speech) creepy corporate sellout/spy apps are what make the normal iOS and droid universe. |
Re: We need Viber on N900
Gloomy fellas in here. Another idea getting shot down but those that have Yappari know what I mean. Its make the N900 better and extends the life.

Re: We need Viber on N900
DfLo1913, please understand that I am not against a viber app, more that I consider the service to be less in line with the open nature of the N900. I admit to being a hypocrite, I have a skype account and use it. If there were a viber app I might use it over skype so if it were possible I hope it could be written. Perhaps if not a native Maemo/Meego app the apkenv crew can crack open the android app.

Re: We need Viber on N900
Do we really need another wazup thread? Do we really need it? How many times we were through pointless discussions about some closed source, sh|tty useless software, that even developers are not interested into porting for N900?
Do you really think that anyone able to reverse-engineer it will be, at the same time, so clueless to be interested in this program, at all? I got nice suggestion for all little sheeps whining "bring it to us!" - either learn and do it yourself (by the time you gather required knowledge, you'll probably lose interest in using such crap, and enter new, more beautiful world of existence ;) ), or crowdsource funds and pay viber's creator for doing N900 port. Everyone is happy. /Estel |
