I pulled the trigger on a second N900
 

For someone like me that really appreciates what the N900 is and what it offers the recent Nokrosoft news were a real bummer. I was really looking forward to a Nokia Meego device that offered everything the N900 did and more. However, by the way things look now I doubt that such a device will ever come to be. Sure, there is supposed to be a Nokia Meego device coming this year. But, it seems doubtful that it will have a keyboard, to say the least of an FM Trasnmitter, etc.

The idea of switching over to Android is not completely negative. After all, it is Linux under the hood, way under. However, not having PyQt and PySide, to play with is just a bummer. Same with Web OS.

When I bought my N900 I purchased a three year warranty for it. So, I am supposedly covered for three years. However, what good is a warranty if when my N900 finally dies there is nothing in the market available that I want as a replacement. So, I have been seriously considering getting a second N900.

There are few things I don't like about the N900. One of them is the built-in media player, especially because it lacks an Equalizer. I mean, even with my old Palm devices I could get better sound quality out of the device. Eventually, a couple of media players appeared with an equalizer included, but they lacked just too many features. In particular, I do enjoy being able to just randomly play files from my whole collection and neither of those players had that feature. So, I have been putting up with the in-built media player for more than a year now.

Thankfully, thanks to Somebody (Nikolay Tischenko) from Novosibirsk, Russia, and a Slackware user no less, this is now changed. Nikolay has released Someplayer, which is the best music player I have ever enjoyed on a portable device.

The player is released under the GPLv2 license. It has all the features I could ask for, including an equalizer. Ahhh, what a difference a little equalization makes! I can't take the N900 of my ears now.

So now, with the N900 being the awesome media player I had always wanted it to be, and with the recent development and regular updates of the Community SSU, I decided I am all set.

The N900 is now everything *I* need on a portable device. I love it as is. No need to wait for the next wizzy bang this or that. I am sitting on the N900 for the foreseeable future. I don't care about Flash 10 whatever. For me, a great music player was the last void on the N900 feature set. Sure, it could have other improvements, but for me this is it. So I pulled the trigger.

Hopefully by the time my two N900s die a good Meego device is ready to replace them. :cool:

Thanks for the good post. I rarely bother to read this "long" posts (I'm looking at you, Mentalist Traceur ;)) but this was written quite well so I managed to read it all the way through.

I agree with you, there's not a good replacement for N900, for now, in the market. I've made quite clear about how I think about Android so I'm not going to go there now. I've considered WebOS if MeeGo fails to be my replacement, since I'm end-user with little information of power-using so I'd really just need Terminal/irssi, MMS and I'd be set.

However, I've also considered buying a second N900, maybe just for testing purposes. I'd love to install Community SSU again but I'm trying to keep my N900 stable, since I'm quite done with re-flashing.

I took my 2nd N900 too. Can be used by wife (as an excuse ;) ) but mainly because I feel so much safer with it :) :) And it made me try some more adventurous things including nitdroid and cssu!

Thanks for sharing that. But, it does not change my mind. It may be that the upcoming Meego device is all that, but I still have my doubts. In the talk he says that the Meego device will have some very elegant hardware. What does that mean? Keyboardless? Capacitive screen? I am not interested in any of those.

I could wait a few months until the specs leak, but by then the N900 stock could be depleted. There is a saying that goes "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". Besides, what is the price going to be for that device? I can get an N900 brand new, with warranty, for $350. I doubt that I can get an N950 for that amount. No, I made up my mind. I am going with the N900 all the way. ;)

I've been debating it. My bigger issue is the only place to get them now seems to be through NokiaUSA (I live in the US), which frankly has the worst customer support I've ever experienced.

Ohh. :) Thanks... last I looked at Amazon they were out of stock and not looking to have more in stock any time soon. Guess that changed? Now the debate... wait for 950 or get a second 900?

(Think there's a chance of up-porting Maemo to the 950? :rolleyes: )
