Well I'm stumped for the moment, the device wasn't automounted.
And it's still getting ext4 errors, which has to be the build itself as far as I can see.

I've tried it from two PC's (fedora and debian)

Getting raw image from here

I was using the power kernel/uboot, I removed that and used the default pr and exactly the same issue.

All I can think is the alpha is broken....has anyone got this working?

I can neither boot this:

http://repo.meego.com/MeeGo/builds/t...-armv7hl-n900/

nor the image deadmalc used.

I am using win32imager.

After a while (about 5 minutes) I get a black screen with where I see a white dash in the upper left corner - but that's it.

We tested this fine (and based a presentation on it) and so did others, do you see any errors with mmcblk0 during bootup?

Shouldn't it be mmcblk1 for the micro-sd card?

To answer the original question, I had it running with a minor work around. uboot would not boot it everytime. I had to type mmc1 init at the prompt and then run mmcboot. Otherwise, the phone would boot into maemo.

I had to wipe the DE alpha to get my card back, unfortunately. Next time around I will try to find a way to have 1st partition available for maemo and still have DE around.

In case encouragement helps, I am really, really, glad to see the DE being developed. Although I am not a developer, I would be happy as long as the phone/e-mail/IM parts work well.

Mfe and skype functionality of the stock N900 would be hard to replace though.

I'll reflash and post exactly what I see, when people say it takes a while for the first boot...how long is a while (10mins,30?)
I left it for about 5 mins...is that not long enough!

Re: MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900

Think I know the problem, i reflashed the memory card...
it was taking ages! it was reporting 1.5Mb/sec writing

It is a class 10 memory card and it used to give 15Mb/sec, so I think the memory card is duff, which is really annoying I've not used it other than flashing meego!

It didn't report any I/O errors or anything which is extremely annoying

So I'm just about to order another one and give it another go.... pffft!

Re: MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900

I've installed the 15-Apr image and it works fast at times (class 10).
Firefox address bar won't accept the HW KB enter nor backspace... Probably a known issue.

I have added locally the layout to allow Hebrew VKB, but the HW KB did not cooperate until I ran `setxkbmap -layout us,il` (switch langs is with the dreaded Shift+Ctrl) - but even with that it is missing some chars.

It will occur to other languages as well as it turns out that the HW layouts that were added by ukeyboard in Maemo do not exist/loaded in Meego (/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/ukeyboard).

How can we integrate those into Meego DE?

Submit a package with them, good excuse to learn RPM packaging :)

(Get an account on build.pub.meego.com and it's easy from there)

Since it is N900 specific, shouldn't those changes from ukeyboard be integrated to /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-51 instead of creating a complementing package?

I'm afaraid of a similar fate to "what goes in Extras stays in Extras".
It is affecting more then one language since the symbols file in ukeyboard contain more than several languages...

Interestingily enough, those symbols are in the xkb upstream. So best to submit there.

Making myself more clear, the nokia_vndr/rx-51 ones are in xkb upstream as far as I know. You can submit them upstream so everyone using xkb can use them.

It means that the DE release is in VERY EARLY stages and is more like a "proof of concept" with very limited functionality and applications.
the system will boot into a handset ux, depending on whether your sim is pin locked, yopu may or may not be able to use very basic telephony functios and most of the other applications are either buggy or merely are acting as placeholders in the current menus.

pycage 2011-04-30 22:28

Re: MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900

Well, I was able to make a phone call with it. But otherwise, there's currently not much to see. The applications crash a lot and the text labels contain mostly placeholders.
It looks like it will have a great future, though.

Ok: I have a question which has been asked, but no real answer was produced..

Meego: This is to be installed on SD, I know.
Can I partition my eMMC and install it there like Nitdroid?
I only have a slow class 2 SD (8GB and a 16GB but - class 2! :( )

I have done the google fu, but found nothing good enough.

If I will take it upstream it might be updated only when XKB package is updated in Meego, unless I specifically request a backport by the Meego team.

I asked the Meego IM team and they have said that they are considering to neglect xkb in the future.

Considering both cases, I will need to take it upstream and create a maybe create a package for the next Meego release which will somehow need to be dependent on xkb usage ( just in case it won't be included). Thus adding the ukeyboard symbols file and a relevant entry to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. But if I'll create such a package, can it be included in the N900 DE release so that users will have it out of the box?

I'm a noob at git... created a mess :(

Anyway the merged rx-51 is at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36739

I have tested it in Meego and it worked OK. Hebrew HW layout become available after `setxkbmap -layout he` and switch between English and Hebrew was done by the uncomfortable Ctrl+Shift

Update:
Also opened a Meego bug for backport rx-51 https://bugs.meego.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16973

For the people, who aren't following the mailling lists here's how the new dialer looks so far in QML, I believe it's created by Tom Swindell (AKA alterego).

It looks really good so far.

Added.
Upstream now includes the patched rx-51.
Ctrl+Shift is not very usable for changing languages, so we need to figure out why Ctrl+Space doesn't work
(at least for me - I will see if it reproduced for other multi layout languages)

Other then that, I will query around to see how Meego will allow users to choose the hardware keyboard
layout as in the 15-Apr release I could only find the virtual keyboard layout.

Excellent :) Then we can probably get it included in MeeGo.com too. Add the bug report/git commit to the ideas page and we'll get it included.

I have been following this forum for info regarding Meego development:
http://trac.tspre.org/meetbot/meego-meeting/2011/

I can only see discussions up until April 21 in that link.
Has it been moved to another location?
Thanks

I hate quoting myself but in my search to make it work with Ctrl+Space I found the following gem hiding in symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-51
Code:

// Ctrl+Space switches between 1st and 5th level (hardcoded in hildon)
:(
1) The best shortcut that I could find for now is Ctrl+FN which in Maemo popped the symbols dialog.
2) For some reason while in the Hebrew layout (US layout is unaffected), FN+Space does not output '@', but Shift+Space does. Since this was copied as is from ukeyboard, I am confused.

Update:
This issue with the "@" reproduces for all multi layout languages, like Greek, Macedonian, etc...
Still searching why...

Re: MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900

I have to many ideas QtQuick I want to have/write in for LinuxDesktop and Meego atm. But I have to short time... Posting ideas here maybe someone also intrested to see this in Meego.

* Terminalapp:

A better handset based terminalapp in QtQuick is a must for Meego DE. xterm just sucks on handset. I have started too look at the libvte stuff but its seems to bee to big project port it.

However I did make a very simple ugly hack skeleton in QtDeclarative to start bash in a QProcess and list dir (ls) and rendering it in QtQuick. Now I am trying to parse some of the ANSI Escape strings soo lets see whats happen in the future. Maybe I will release my crapcode later on :-D

* PasswordManager

Store passwords/pincodes in phone encrypted ofcourse. I havent seen any good in Maemo atm?

* pictureupoloder for my own site :-D

* cut/copy/paste app between linux desktop and Meego

.....

Well in that case let me explain:) It was a joke in reference to people saying MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition is only for developers. As if it was enforced somehow, like for example deleting a random file unless you compile something on device every day.

It does not delete a random file though, so don't worry.
