Closing Gizmo is not an issue. Although gizmo will be closed, the sipphone account (associate with the gizmo account) will not be closed (thats a separate company). Just get a PSTN for sipphone # from ipkall and put it in GV to forward to. No need to touch the phone

Are you saying that the Gizmo5 SIP proxy, proxy01.sipphone.com, will continue to operate? How do you know that?

The SipBroker provider white pages search (HERE) shows a green check mark next to the names of such VSPs. Avoid those with a red X next to their name.

Not being very SIP savvy, can you explain if these VSPs (not even sure what they are) can be used like Gizmo5 and Whistle as softphones with phone numbers that can accept Google Voice calls...I used to use Gizmo5, now use Whistle (but no speakerphone, that I'd like)...wonder if there are others...Just found my way to this forum, more for developers I see, but wonder if someone can clarify...Thanks, Rick

Sipphone is kind a separate company and has nothing to do with google voice. Nothing mentioned on their site regarding the termination. Check

My interpretation of the somewhat unclear March 4 Gizmo5 shutdown notice is that all Gizmo5 services will be terminated, including the SIP registrar/proxy (proxy01.sipphone.com). After that happens there will be no direct way to receive Google Voice calls on a SIP client, however one should be able to receive Google Voice calls to any phone number forwarded to a SIP address.

So the steps are:

1. Get service with some VSP providing SIP service and a free phone number,
OR,
Get service with a VSP providing only the SIP services (such as Voxalot) and get a free phone number at IPkall or anywhere else that suits you.

2. Connect the SIP client on your Internet tablet to your VSP's SIP proxy using your SIP credentials.

3. Add your phone number (from step 1) to your Google account and receive Google Voice calls on your your SIP client.

Based on the following question sent to Gizmo5 support and their reply (below) I don't think your Gizmo5 phone number will work at all.

Quote:

Question: What will happen to the 1747 numbers, will they still work if you have a hardware device and use those numbers as a forwarding number in GV?
What about the business accounts?

Reply: Unfortunately at this time, Google Voice does not have the capabilities to be configured with an ATA device.
Thank you for your patience.

I hope you do realize the sipphone.com web site haven't been updated for several years. Their online forum is closed for any new posts, their support and account login links forwards to Gizmo5,... You do get the picture?

I'm in the same boat. I have several relatives that we all use the sipphone SIP services to communicate to each others. (We are all using HardWare SIP ATA devices. We never used the PC softphone.) One of them even have incoming PSTN phone number and calling credit balance.

Anyone have any quesses if Google will open some SIP server/proxy to replace sipphone/Gizmo5?

Voip.ms, like many other VSPs, does not provide a free DID, you get a SIP address for the main account and one SIP address for each sub account. I'm not sure, but at voip.ms you may have to configure a sub account in order to have a SIP address reachable from outside the voip.ms network. Once you have a SIP address you can forward your third party DID (such as IPkall) to your SIP address.
