Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

Sorry I'm not very techy with all this jargon, but bottom line, is there any way to continue the same kind of service that we had with Gizmo5 + DialCentral?

Do I need to somehow get a SIP # again? And if I do, how do I get it to work with DialCentral, since I would no longer be using the Gizmo application...

Thanks!

One good option is to get a different mobile device, one that will run Google's Mobile App, see here. I don't think there's a non-tech-savy way to replace Gizmo5. Sometimes it's best to select the software you want to use, then go buy the hardware to run that software.

I am fine paying 1 ¢ per minute if Google activates this service :) Any other takers?

If it is standards compliant SIP, then yes.
I may be willing to pay upto 2 cents. I think thats the competing rate.

For about $0.01/minute you can make calls from your N810 without Google Voice, using some service such as voip.ms or callwithus.com.

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

As far as I understand, there are voip providers which give a free incoming number and do not charge for incoming calls. This, combined with DialCentral or TOR on n810 is the way for free calls using Google voice.

There's no real need to get a new phone. the Nokia tablet series has been good enough and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

So Google basically bought out Gizmo aka Sipphone and instead of improving the service they've now killed it for everyone except US-based Google-users while us outsiders can't even use their gtalk (to make calls to actual phones)? Is that the gist of it?

Bad Google!

And there's no way for the (former) Gizmo users to keep their long-standing 1-747-XXXetc number?

Well that's rather inconsiderate given that the users of that well-liked (except support) service are now losing their number, (fully paid for) VOIP access and native platform support. "Progress" works in mysterious ways.

This isn't a successful way to make Android look more attractive...

So, apart from copying gizmo phonebook elsewhere, what now?

The final verdict in this issue is that there is no free service like Gizmo5 that would allow both free incoming and outgoing calls combined with Google Voice, right?

The cheapest service so far looks sipgate which allows receiving free calls but charging 2-3 cents per outgoing call within the States.

I signed up for localphone. Works pretty well. I can connect to it with my SIP phones (like N900), get multiple incoming numbers cheaply, and the call rate is about half of Google's rate (albeit not free within U.S.)

So get a DID (phone number) from localphone and forward your Google number to it. That number can also forward to your SIP account if you prefer. Incoming calls are free. Calls forward to SIP are free.

If you have multiple incoming numbers you can set your outgoing caller ID to any of them.

It's great for me since I call international a lot. For domestic calls, I can call out using my google voice app for free.

So far my Gizmo sip #is still working. Received a call last night and I'm not getting an account error in the status bar applet.

Gizmo5 SIP account connects, but calls are no longer... Goodbye Gizmo5 :(

Sipgate is now accepting new users, but the problem is it doesn't send SMS invitation to pure Google Voice number :D

Anybody get sipgate to work with N8xx? Keep erroring out.

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

Got it. For those coming from Gizmo Some weird things here. If you use it. Use your Sipgate ID for the initial username and "sipgate.com" after the "@"

Transport: auto
Keep alive: Register

Authentication SIP ID, SIP password (again this is not the login and password you made when creating the account)

Autodetect Stun does work.

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

Well whatdoyaknow....Sipgate is GoogleVoice. Just tried to set up the forwarding and got this message:

"Cell phone numbers cannot be shared across Google Voice accounts."

Not cool.

I may be wrong. I just verified the number. Looks like I'm in business.

I just have an N800 and no cell phone.

Can I use a friend's cell phone to get a sipgate account?

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

I have Google Voice forwarding to sipgate no problem.

@Addison As long as your friend is willing, I don't think it will be an issue. Just signed up yesterday, I think you only need the cell phone to get the invitation number, works through email after that for registering.

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

You can still make free calls with Google Voice and an ATA with several free VOIP services, this explains the way to to this...

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

I so goofed!

I signed up with Sipgate using the Tear web browser on my N800. Such a mistake. *lol*

It defaulted to saying that I'm a business owner by default.

If I changed it to residential the browser kept going to the next page before I could fill out any info.

So yeah, I now have a business number and I'm super confused on this.

Poopers. :)

Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

Sipgate still doesn't seem to accept new registrations.. :(
So what is the final conclusion here on a Gizmo alternative?

I use Skype meanwhile, but it is a rip off comparing to Gizmo5 prices. - Especially to non-North America and if you factor it connection fees. - I don't understand why Skype is still a money loosing company.

As far as Google Voice goes, is there a solution to use it on N900 natively? (Beside, I hate Google for killing Gizmo after acquiring it).

Thank you for your alternatives suggestions!

There is a thread here made by xur17 where he describes how to use yate to connect to Google Voice.
