June 29th. So... is today the day?

Ok, I've been waiting for today for way too long now. Is today the day of the next update?

For what has been told in these forums, today Nokia people take their holidays so if they don't release the firmware today they aren't going to do so till the middle of august.

Today is the last day of the first semester, and Nokia said they would release the firmware during the first semester. But I can see they telling us the job toke them more than what they pretended because the changes were bigger.

On the other hand it would make no sense for Textrat to laught about us for so long if they weren't going to release the firmware today.

Ok. My idea in this treat is to sumarize everything that has been asked for for the next firmware, so we can then check what has been made and what hasn't.

Hope nobody uses this thread to opine about the things that has been asked, neither to argument about who lies and who don't. Let's try it becomes simply a list, please.

1. Flash 9
2. Skype
3. Skype Video
4. Java
5. Ajax
6. Opera 9.
7. Open Source Browser
8. PIM
9. Phone PIM controler using bluetooth.
10. Phone SIM capable.
11. Phone bluetooth speakers emulator.
12. A2DP sender.
13. SMB, SSH, MC,... integrated into the firmware (installed from scratch).
14. Some open source outhouse project such CANOLA integrated into the main firmware.
15. Mplayer as the Video Player.
16. Touchable Interface for Audio-video (that is: without having to use the stylus).
17. Touchable interface for File Management.
18. Touchable interface for the rest of aplications.
19. Cool efects at the windows managements level.
20. Video Player with lots of other codecs.
21. Sirius Radio.
22. Youtube mobile.
23. 3gp video capable.
24. landscape-portrait habilities.

Edited...
25. Hability to connect to Myth or other TV-streamers.
26. An standard and integrated SIP client.
27. OpenGL
28. Dramatically improved power management.
29. SDHC support.
30. Better hand writting recognition.

Oops. And a fridge, a toaster and DVD player.

Ok, you continue.

Why not add a fridge, a toaster, a television and a DVD-player?

If you look at the list it is not that much. Anyway, I'm not expecting Nokia to fullfill 100% of expectations, I simply wnated to have an extensive list of what has been asked for. Who knows, maybe they can use it as a guide for the next release.

In Finland, holidays take place 25/06 -25 /07, usually. Knowing how Nokia is well organized, you can bet that if they had planned to release theis update on 29/06, they know about vacation timeframe so they would have made sure that update is ready by 22/06 then everything goes on tracks by itself.

This being said, Nokia has already been delaying release date. Example N95 was announced for release Q4 / 2006, but was released Q2 2007. So predictability is not 100% reliable.

So it s not safe to base deduction on assumptions :-)

yes, integrated sip is really the only thing they promised for the 770 and never built into any ITOS. gizmo works fine in principle but is eating all my memory and my cpu cycles. (it also doesnt integrate with the address book)

I guess the plan was to have it based on Telepathy-Sofiasip; don't know why things move so slowly.

yeah, the hell with Skype, give us a shackle-free SIP phone !

What I d like

- an OS that allows a dramatically improved power management.

Especially if there is Skype, or any proper VoIP and we start using it consistently, I don't know how to walk around with a few meters of cable between the N800 and the charger.

I already dim my screen to the min in order to save power....

One of the benefits of staying with a 770 is a *total* absence of stress regarding Nokia release deadlines :-)

^ Wise words spoken here. You better take this seriously...

But no need to panic: The situation is nowhere near that bad as the N95 example above. ;)

however let s thank Mara for indicating that we re not talking about 2 quarters delay.

Nokia Shop in Helsinki asked to check the update page. said that this will be the very first place showing the release.

Who here will be the first to post the screen shot of the new update available?

Spanish Nokia N800 update page:

"¡OS 2007 edición v. 2.2006.51-6 ya está disponible!"

Translation: "OS 2007 edition v. 2.2006.51-6 is available now!" :o

I noticed the update wizard did get updated.. but the new firmware isn't there. Can those of you in the know tell me if repeatedly hitting F5 today is a waste of time?

Um... maybe you misunderstood me. I'm kidding you that your identification of tomorrow as the cutoff date could lead some to think you're giving them a release date. ;)

The Nokia website is bowing before the might of my once every 30 seconds refreshing of the firmware page. Mouhahahahaaaaaaaaa.

No, I'm okay. Really.

The update wizard version change was about a week ago (at least - that's when I noticed it), so might not be directly linked...

Ha, yes. Dumb me.

HELLO YOU ALL HERE: I DID NOT SAY THIS IS THE RELEASE DATE. I NOTICED INNOCENTLY THAT S1 ENDS TOMORROW NOT TODAY - FROM A CALENDAR POINT OF VIEW.

But 30 minutes ago I DID write that it s not safe to base deductions from assumptions.

Crazy how believers want what they want to believe in to become true and by doing so make it happen. Jesus Christ must have had a hell of a time 2000 years ago.

You don't want to know. But if you think you do, read the "no personal attacks" thread near the bottom of the forum.

Hey, at least they RELEASED UPDATE to the update wizard... :D Would that fill half of the promise?

As far as I can tell... you'll be happier to treat today as any other normal Friday: Go out, have fun, take a beer...

Coming back on the original topic of this thread.

Did some one declared that 29/06 had to be the latest possible date for a release in S2?
On which grounds? working week instead of calendar week? Can't a release be programmed to be uploaded beforehand?

why not 30/06?

Since there is so much talk about getting skype on the n800 i wanted to write a brief tutotrial on how I accomplished this just 1 hour ago.

1.download skype on your laptop.
2.install skype, open program
3.put your n800 underneath your laptop
4.enjoy

please note this has not been tested with a desktop or with skype for linux

Bernard 2007-06-29 16:00

Re: June 29th. So... is today the day?

Since I don't think that Nokia will be releasing an update on saturday, I will just rant a bit:

I think it is a very bad thing that Nokia promised Skype in the first half and doesn't deliver, without even a mention of the delay.
I think it is disrespectful to your own customers, and gives the impression that Nokia doesn't give a crap about them.
I know this is common practice, and for new product releases that is annoying nut understandable.
In this case it is unforgivable for such a big company and rude, because people already bought the product, and the promises was a part in the buying decision.
People need to be able to trust a big company, and this shows you can't even depend on the market leader in cellphones! (a very bad and arrogant attitude of Nokia)
For the Internet Tablet product it is even more a bad call: It is based on open source software, and that depends on open communication about changes in software. Nokia doesn't even tell the community that there is a delay, that is good communication skills!

If a new game console is released with the promise of a lot of cool games to be released for Christmas, and people buy it because of that, they WILL feel very badly when all games are delayed without even a mention.

The majority of OS 2006 and OS 2007 releases have occurred on a Friday.

Re: June 29th. So... is today the day?

Although I would really like the update to come today, I understand that it's not always possible to meet deadlines in the software world. What surprises me is that Nokia seems to be mute in terms of any mention of when an update is due. And as mentioned above, if the update does not come out today or tomorrow, I am saddened that they didn’t see fit to say “Sorry but we’re not going to make our promise of Skype in the first half of 2007.

Anyway, that is my only criticism. I love the n800 and think they have done a good job with it so far and look forward to seeing further improvements to help this platform grow.
