What case and screen protector

Hey guys I have had mimes for over a month now and I don't have a screen protector nor do I have a case cover for it.

I've been looking on ebay for a cheap screen protector and case and have found these I don't know if they be any good at all.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NOKIA-N900-BLA...ht_1797wt_1139

Sorry for the noob questions however I want one thats cheap and can also hold against scratches etc.

I used screen protectors for years with my old Palm devices. They look ugly and harder to clean than the screen itself. In all cases, after the device died, I removed the screen protector and had a pristine screen, but one that I never really enjoyed! With the N900 I decided to go without a screen protector. I have had one for over a year and the screen still looks good. I much rather enjoy the screen to its full while the device lives.
Just my ¢2.

I bought 3 screen protectors for like 0.99$ on eBay.

Looks just great. And even if it doesn't, it only cost 0.99$. I ain't gonna complain about that :)

Edit: the N900 screen can be easily scratched without a screen protector! Be warned

I was close to getting the PDair vertical case, you can get it on ebay, but I think someone mentioned that the inner material could be a little rough, and without my screen protector on, I wasn't sure if that's what I wanted.

I bought the Vikuiti screen protector (£8) seems like a quality one, although I'm yet to put it on.

Might have been me -- I recently got the PDAir vertical case (the one with a belt clip). So far, it's been perfect; even when I'm not wearing it on my belt, I keep the phone in it for protection.

But yeah, it grips the phone fairly tightly, and the inner surface is a roughened, slightly rubbery material (maybe a vinyl surface?) that can rub against the phone as you slide it in or out of the case. I wouldn't want to use it without a screen protector.

Right now, I'm using a "Lexerd TrueVue" screen protector, which has worked well for almost two months. But I don't really know how well it stacks up against other screen protectors.

Otterbox commuter case. It's chunky but it's very effective. Comes with a really good screen protector.

Am i right in thinking that we shouldn't use cases with magnets to close? I want to get this http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Genuine-Case...item53e679b172 but it's a magnet closure

Re: What case and screen protector

second the otterbox.
not easy to swap out battery or memory card etc but tough as old boots

Yeah, magnets can be a problem; the N900 uses magnetic fields to determine whether the keyboard has been slid out, and can get confused by external magnets. The Maemo wiki here has an entry describing this:

FAQ entry #1

(And yeah, that is one reason I went with the PDair vertical sleeve, it has no flaps or fasteners to worry about. :) )

I thought so. I had a magnetic case for the N95 and the battery drained, without use, in about 3 hours.
I'm considering the other PDair, the one you have, but i'm worried that there's nothing to stop it falling out if it's worn on the belt?

That isn't a problem with this design; the front and back of the case are joined at the sides with an elastic webbing, which gets stretched enough to grip the phone wirh a decent amount of force when you put it in.. There is no way the phone will slide out by itself, even if you hold the case upside down and shake it...

What about putting it in jeans pocket - too bulky with the belt clip?

Hmm. I really haven't tried it in my pockets much (I generally prefer to clip the phone to my belt), but I've just now slipped it into my jeans pocket, and it fits ok... But yeah, it is a bit bulky. That might be due more to the size of the phone, though; the belt clip itself is fairly thin.

I'm not sure I'd really notice a difference if the belt clip wasn't there.

And now I'm remembering why I don't like having the phone in my pocket; almost impossible to pull it out when I'm sitting down. :)

I use Clarivue screen protector...Its a bit pricey $9.99 (USD) for 2 of them. But they are extremely good. Ive been using one for the last 8 months without much care and it looks like i just put it on yesterday. Extremely reliable, i think its worth the price!

It's true, makes a lot of sense. We purchase a product to enjoy the utility. If the cost of preservation exceeds to utility value, then it's no point. It's different from preserving a house, car or watch which does not age with technology.

Just to throw in my own 2 pennies, the screen protector I've got is crystal clear and easy to clean. Maybe technology has advanced somewhat? In any case, I haven't yet seen any downside to using one...

Great, thanks. Is the clip removable/rotatable like the other PDair cases?

No, the clip is fixed in place and non-removable. Extremely strong, though!

Re: What case and screen protector

I've been using the invisible shield ever since I got the phone. It does full body protection, and if I ever do manage to scratch it, they send me a new one for the cost of shipping (something like 3 bucks.) It requires a pretty clean environment to install, but it doesn't bubble up or peel off. I like to show it off by grabbing my keys out of my pocket, showing someone how sharp my office key is, then going to town on the screen. Not a scratch.

Re: What case and screen protector

I recommend a screen protector. I used a JAVOscreen with my Treo 650 and I bought an N800 JAVOscreen protector for my N900 and cut it down to size. It's a great thing to have, you just don't have to worry about scratches *at all* (at least not on the screen area, this protector only covers the screen plus a little extra space on the sides.) I haven't had any problems with it getting dirty or anything, just set and forget. My experience with other screen protectors has been pretty poor though.
