770 vs 800

how much better is the 800 as opposed to the 770 and does it justify the prce, also if it makes a difference im going to be developng apps on the device!

thanks

Re: 770 vs 800

The 770 is that much lower due to a very recent price drop. Before that the price was much closer although there are certainly differences between the two. As to your question, that's very subjective. Best way to answer it IMO is to see what you're willing to live without on the N800. If the 770 suits your needs, it's a helluva deal right now.

770 = old & busted

800 = new hotness

Re: 770 vs 800

Basically here's the main things the N800 offers over the 770, cosmetics aside:

-one more speaker (for stereo)
-one more SD card slot (total 2)
-more internal memory
-slightly faster processor
-built-in stand
-webcam
-fm tuner
-current official support from Nokia

If those differences are worth the price differential to you, then go with the N800. If not, the 770's new price is very attractive IMO, and annoyances aside, does what it is intended to do for the most part. The things it can't do (such as process Flash 9) are shared with the N800 currently.

Edited because I overlooked the webcam and fm tuner (d'oh)

Does the 770 have the webcam?

No, but don't expect much from the N800's webcam.

It works, but is underwhelming.

Re: 770 vs 800

The N800 has more memory and a faster CPU. Plus: It's currently supported by Nokia meaning you can expect further firmware updates, probably until they release their next model that is.

The strengths of the 770 are: the hard cover that both protects the screen and puts it in power saving mode, making it a much better travel companion; the hardware buttons (tiny and hard to handle on a N800, very good quality on the 770); an finally, of course, its unbeatable price.

Other things like the camera or the build-in stand that both come with a N800 I still have to find a use for. (The stand, for example, leaves the device in one of 2 very strange angles which look nice on presentations but are hardly usable when working with it.)

II had a 770, now have an 800.
The browser is now more stable, while on the older model kept
crashing when a few pages were opened. This was very annoying. I am happier with the new one.

Re: 770 vs 800

The 770:
  • 64 MB RAM (enable swap space on MMC to make it more stable)
  • 128 MB Flash RAM (for a harddisk)
  • 800x480 touchscreen with 225 dpi
  • 1 RS-MMC card slot
  • WLAN and Bluetooth
  • mono speaker
  • microphone
  • a solid protection case
  • OS 2006 (quite stable but not as stable as OS 2007)
  • built like a tank (can survive being dropped on the floor)
  • USB 1.1 connection to your PC (this sucks)

The N800:
  • 128 MB RAM (seems to be just right for this kind of device, you can live without swap space)
  • 256 MB Flash RAM (for a harddisk)
  • 800x480 touchscreen with 225 dpi
  • 2 card slots compatible with RS-MMC, MMC, SD, and Mini-SD
  • WLAN and Bluetooth
  • stereo speakers
  • microphone
  • no protection case (the N800 sunglasses sleeve is a bad joke!)
  • VGA web cam producing pictures of a quality ranging from ugly to average (depending on the light)
  • FM-tuner
  • 3D-graphics hardware currently disabled and unusable by the software (maybe later)
  • OS 2007
  • the device seems to be a bit fragile, don't drop it
  • USB 2.0 connection to your PC
  • same screen size as the 770, but a bit larger and heavier

Re: 770 vs 800

I have to disagree about the 800 being fragile. I dropped mine at the mall ann it bounced across the floor, and a few days later my 2 year old slid it off the kitchen table onto thee tile. The aluminium face has a minor dent but it is working fine.

Also, when I am holding it, iflip down the stand and slide my hand between the stand & the 800. makes holding it easier and more confortable... at least for me... plus I prop it up on the stand to watch movies,so I disagree about the stand beng useless too.

Excellent summary pycage.

Some people complain about the slightly smaller buttons.
