it would be nice if the texts fro liveprofiles gets merged with the build in conversation

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

I don't think we'll have contact integration just yet although it is something that we may look into in the future.

About the previews, my apologies but I still don't have permission to show these around. There's a few things left that need fine tuning.

All I can say at the moment is that it's going well and the app looks exactly like the other platforms (or better!).

Any other questions please ask. I will keep in touch.

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

i'm not fussed on integration, i think a seperate app is better. looking forward to seeing the released beta!

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

I think integration would be nice but for the moment, i too would be satisfied with just a launch. Seems as though it's getting close though.

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

Hi,
@deleet, why should I use Liveprofile over Skype, gtalk or msn? why ppl compare it with BBM? maybe it has its own PIN server? (don't think so jusk asking)
this sounds like the previous must have app whatsapp :S

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

I'm also wondering about this esp. re Skype. If I wanted to use a closed protocol binary blob, isn't Skype way better established already?

deleet 2011-06-29 03:56

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

I understand that there are other chat protocols available on modern smartphones, plenty of them.

However, I believe you're not looking at the whole picture, we are different in many ways such as:
  • available on mobile phones only
  • our interface looks a lot better and is easier to use
  • social components bring a real close-friend network to your phone
  • message delivery receipts (sent/delivered/read)
  • posting of status messages onto Facebook and Twitter
  • much more...

This is really just the beginning of a 20 page list, but I'm only allowed to reveal the first paragraph :(

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

main advance its that its the only really multiplatform push chat system

whatsapp doesnt work on ipods, and only old nokia phones ignoring linux variants

and its get group chat its will be one of the few options n900 to get group chat besides pidgin :/

i hope our version n9/n900/symbian 3

gets group chat like others,

i hope they are using qtquick so it runs on all 3 nokia platforms and soon s40.

its performance its good enough it should turn decofactor messenger of mobiles :P .

Sorry, but there are people I keep contact with that don't have a smart phone but have a PC. And when I am at my PC, I would prefer to multi-finger type on the PC keyboard than the N900 keyboard (and even less on a touch screen device).

I haven't "switched" IM protocols or apps in years. I use skype and jabber (2 private jabber servers, GTalk, Facebook). Because I choose platforms that have jabber support, or decent jabber clients.

I don't buy into vendor-specific, I want vendor neutral (which is why I think Meego is a better option than Android). This is why I wouldn't ever buy a BlackBerry (even though they are now very popular in my country).

It's like asking for Compuserve or AOL (the closed network before they connected to the Internet) support for the N900. What is the point when we have great internet (or in this case, widely supported IM protocol/app) support?

...

that about sums it up for me too. not to rain on liveprofile's parade though, if they got a successful business model with YAPP (yet another proprietary protocol), congrats still just from the enterpreneurial viewpoint! it's difficult to get 7 digits of users in anything you do.

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

@lkravovicz & buchanmilne; I understand what you guys are saying, and perhaps liveprofile is not suited to your day to day needs, but this is not the case with me, and obviously not with quite a few persons on this thread. Most of the people that i'm in contact with own a PC but just don't have the time to log on to msn and skpe on a day to day basis, either because they are on the move or away from their desk etc. and there is no exchanging image files or sound clips with msn or skype mobile, and then there is the data usage issue, i don't have an unlimited data plan and msn esp. is not optimized for mobile platforms (compression rate is still too high). With an app like liveprofile it makes it much more convenient to keep in touch because lets face it, in this day and age no one leave their cell at home. Multi/cross platform mobile chat app. is the wave of the future, and one with facebook and twitter integration makes it all the better. The debate between closed and open source, free and non-free apps will go on for years but the fact on the matter is that people want it option to choose, that being said, liveprofile coming to the n900 is a good thing, some may like the app and some may not, some may use the app and some may not but at least we have a choice in the matter.

I don't see the point you are trying to make. Who is talking about an IM client for a PC?

We are talking about a cross platform IM client that is POPULAR, i.e. people will have it installed on their phone. It is pointless for me to have skype, msn, facebook chat et al. on my phone if nobody else I know has them on theirs or wont have it switched on. The majority of people who have a POPULAR smartphone i.e. a Blackberry or Iphone, wont have skype or MSN on their device. Apps like whatsapp and LiveProfile are designed for mobiles only as an alternative to SMS or MMS.

If i have misunderstood your post please let me know.

Re: LiveProfile (more than a BBM clone)

he is right.

while n900 supports bunch on protocols.

no group chat, send file features built in u need a client.
live profile client for nokia could be good, it doesnt need to be integrated while they add a shortcut to menu like pidgin.

I'm waiting for this app as push and offline msg (roaming is no go for internet connection) is one big thing to have. I just don't know why you refuse to support real computers. Isn't it better to have same chat everywhere? If I'm by my computer I would much rather type on it than on the phone (and that's with n900 that has good keyboard). If you also include high quality security like skype I think that you would have a winner on your hands ;)

please get this up quick... i am dying for it...

N900 is a **** of a device for IM... the IM plugins dont work, and there are no real apps either...

LiveProfile will be a real messiah for thousands of people like me who expect a phone (or a computer) to atleast handle IM.

Actually, there are many IM's that link directly into Conversations and from my experience, they all work just fine. (Skype, Google Talk, Facebook, Jabber, MSN, the now dead OVI etc).

As for IM clients, the N900 is not an iPhone or Android phone which needs seperate applications for IM, that is the whole point of conversations, all these IM's rolled into one. If LiveProfile and Whatsapp could be added to the VoIP and IM accounts it would be great.

I would agree. There's nothing that could replace typing on my PC..even though my n900 has a great keyboard ..;)

and file transfer dont work so great either.

LiveProfile 2.0 coming soon!

We are pleased to announce that we are in late development stages of LiveProfile 2.0. Very few details have been released to the public regarding this new release. LiveProfile 2.0 is huge. It’s a combination of speed, reliability, and performance enhancements for all platforms, as well as new features unique to LiveProfile. You asked and we delivered.

A few things you can expect for 2.0:

Groups with a unique twist
LiveProfile for Symbian, Meego, Maemo
Improved status updates feed
Enhanced user interface and profiles
Broadcast messages with the ability to mute
MAJOR BlackBerry update to improve speed and reliability (will officially leave beta)
Additional language support
Deeper social integration
