If a two week coding competition vote started on September 9, it would run into the regular election and I would want to avoid the confusion.

Perhaps 2 weeks are better than a single week. But you're right regarding the Council voting.

I would say lets start the voting as soon as everything is set up and lets run it until the 20th of September. (no mather if this is 7 days, 14 days or only 10 days on the end)

In my opinion it is important to finally set the voting up and get a decision ASAP. We can't wait until the Council voting is made.

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

Thanks zehjotkah, you have access to the database of your own site. So I hope you don't have to create the list manually.

I have a question regarding the category:
So there were 9 votings grouped by the category or do we run a single, big voting and count later the votes in each category?

zehjotkah 2011-08-31 08:58

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

Attached is the list.

I'd prefer nine votings for each category, because we said that the prizes will be equally distributed for each category.
One big voting would be easier at first sight, but how to nominate a winner in a potential category with no votes?

What has to be done now?
Ask Henri Bergius or Niels Breet to create the voting. Will sent them a PM.

It would be a lot easier if these requests were handled via email to our support address, not via TMO private messages or Google Plus. Can you do this?

Hi,

I don't think the election software is really suitable for this? We'd
have to create 8 different elections for that with 8 different tokens
per user. That seems a bit over the top.

Can't we just use the poll mechanism on talk for this?

Quote:

Actually 9 different elections, because I forgot the Beginner category.
We had a problem with fake votings last time, that's why we'd like to use the election software.

But I'll ask at the forums.
Thanks!
Okay, now it's up to you: Should we use the forum poll system again (like last coding competition)?

Helmuth 2011-08-31 09:46

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

[sigh] I don't understand why this shouldn't work with the election software. 9 polls instead of a single poll... a little bit slower perhaps, but we could start a poll every 12 hours instead of all polls at once to reduce the server load.

What about public votings in a forum poll? So we are able to check ourself for users registered within the competition timeframe?

I could create the threads and run the poll. But I would really prefer the council election system.
Benefit: We are able to vote there for more than a single project, it is more secure, automated, every member will be informed, no one is able to blame us he haven't known and the poll is secret (no public poll is needed nor extra work for admins to search for double ip adresses)

Depends if we are able to run with the Council Voting system or not. If I understood correctly there we are able to sort our list of favoirites:

Again, I must say the maemo.org council voting mechanism solves this as well :) , though you don't give points per se, but you order your choices, so it's not only your 'best' vote that counts, but 2nd, 3rd picks, too. Making your points spread per wish is usually not a good idea as just a few voters who go all-in on a single app can change the outcome completely.

As already said last year I don't like (no, I hate) the only 1 vote per caterogy. If you fell in love with 3 applications out of a list of 10 - how could you select only one of this 3 and give the other 2 as many points as the rest of the applications you don't like?

No, currently your ranking is last submission to first of each category. The last submissions are on top and the early birds are on the end of the list.

Edit 2:
Sorry, it's me again. From our Rules:
Code:

•Only users of maemo.org and meego.com who are registered at the time of voting for at least four months are entitled to vote.
So this is in this case not correct:

So I would say if we run it as a forum poll we are forced to run it public. I would volunteer to sort all not valid votes out after the poll ran. Otherwise I see no chance to follow our own rules except the Council Voting system we thought we could and should use. :(

The previous post of me is for Dave Neary to build the voting process based on the council voting system. He asked for that information.
The order should be alphabetical. I just haven't had the time to order the submissions correctly.
Ranking: I meant exactly what you mean. The voter is able to vote for not only one submission but to rank all submissions in that category. Or just vote for two or three. First means your preferred one, last means the submission you don't like that much.

Should I sort the list for you and post it here?
Or have you put in anyway somewhere on a Spreadsheet.

@zjk,

I guess my interest with the competition has come a bit too late, but I'd like to make a donation. Is it still possible?

The only issue is that I would rather NOT use paypal (I cannot convince myself that they're OK). Would it be possible to make a bank transfer? (from Germany).

If so, please let me know by PM (or post account details here if OK).

Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

I'll just quote a message from Dave here without any comments, because I don't have time this evening.

Quote:

OK. I'll try to help you through it.

If you are not confident with SQL, try and ask someone else for help. I can provide access (but so can others), but I don't want to spend time doing stuff that anyone else can do. Teach a man to fish & all that.

Step 1: Define the elections (you're done! great)
Step 2: Create the SQL to create the elections. See http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo.org_team...ng_an_election - especially "Create election in database". Short description: For each election, add to a file "elections.sql":

insert into elections values(
${election_id}, 'elections', '${election_title}', '${start_date}', '${end_date}', ${num_seats}, '${question}');

The election_id should be different for each election. Get the biggest current election_id from http://maemo.org/vote/ (it's 10 right now, so your election_ids will be 11, 12, 13, etc).

Then, add underneath:

INSERT INTO election_choices VALUES
(0, ${election_id}, '${choice_1}'),
(0,${election_id}, '${choice_2}'),
(0,${election_id}, '${choice_3}'),
(0,${election_id}, '${choice_4}'),
...
);

Repeat for each election.

Step 3: Get users.csv off Henri, and run exactly the command I put in the wiki to get the electorate into the database.

Step 4: Modify election instructions (see "Generate election tokens and send out emails") to be what you want people to receive, and give me an email address other than mine which will be the "From" for the emails. Then run the scripts referred to there to generate tmp tokens and email notices out to people.

You're done. The only places where you need help are:
1. Getting users.csv off Henri
2. Need access to the server to run the scripts that create the elections, import the electorate, generate tmp tokens, and send voting instructions.

The things you can (and should) do on your own:
1. Generate the .sql file that creates the elections
2. Modify instructions.txt, and give me an email address to use
3. Handle all of the email related with the election

Ideally, I'll get someone shell access to the server so that you can even do 2 on your own (and you will have to resend tokens to some people too, so I'd prefer that).

Dave.

Here is my attempt at creating the SQL files. Someone else will have to do Step 3 and 4.

Edit: Forgot to mention that in each of the SQL file, the start and end date needs to be set (for example the format 2011-09-03 should work).

So, I hope everything is now correct. I reviewed it based on this Post. I hope zehjotkah made no other mistakes. :D

Personally I really hope that someone who has already access AND the knowledge will look if everything is correct and setup the rest to start the voting.
If we made something totally wrong every TMO member will get 9 emails without working voting, we have to explain, to apologize and to start it again. In my opinion it's to dangerous if some random will get access to start it without the needed background what to do and what to avoid.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US! (and lets hope this works finally)

So perhaps step 2 is finished.
zehjotkah, have you already wrote Henri to get the users.csv file?

And please, be careful with this table. :)

What eMail adress should we use? Is there a default "no-reply" maemo.org adress?

No, I was visiting my Girl and that means that I was reducing my internet-addiction to a minimum... ;)

Ouh, okay. Got it! MeeGo and maemo restricted area. :)

Hopefully we get the election process running this week. I checked the links in the post above. Don't forget to correct the beginning date. Apart from that I have no clue. Sadly I guess I'm unable to help furthermore even if I would. :(

Here, I have time and would try to help.
The next step is:
Quote:

Step 4: Modify election instructions (see "Generate election tokens and send out emails") to be what you want people to receive, and give me an email address other than mine which will be the "From" for the emails. Then run the scripts referred to there to generate tmp tokens and email notices out to people.
You've posted already the link to the instruction.

But:
Quote:

2. Need access to the server to run the scripts that create the elections, import the electorate, generate tmp tokens, and send voting instructions.
Sooo...

The last election eMail I was able to find looks like it was sent form a personal adress from a maemo.org admin or member - I'm sure we are not able to use his adress - so, have you a meetmeego.org adress, zehjotkah?
I'm not sure if its a good idea to use a different domain. So could "no-reply@maemo.org" work? Suggestions?

I guess the only thing I could help at the moment is the instructions.txt. So here is my draft. I hope you haven't already done it. I guess we have to creat 9 instruction files or should we run with a single, universal file?
My draft is without text blocks. I don't know the placeholder because I don't have access to the original file. So don't simply copy and past it. ;)

Code:

The election of the Community Maemo / MeeGo Coding Competition 2011 is now open, and you have received this email as you are eligible to vote. There are 9 different categories so you are able to vote 9 times - once in each categorie.

Participants in the categorie of this email:
[...]

A full list of participants, the projects and screenshots can be fount at: http://competition.meetmeego.org/categories

HOW TO VOTE
-----------
Voting will run from now until September 18th 2011, 23:59 UTC.

Your voting credentials for this categorie are:
  URL: http://maemo.org/vote/;
E-mail: [...]
Vote token: [...]

After authenticating yourself, you can choose your preferred project in order of preference. You will have an opportunity to verify and confirm your vote afterwards.

Once you have confirmed your vote, a unique secret identifier will be given to you which will allow you to verify after the election that your vote was counted correctly.

Once you have voted, you will not be able to vote again.

Note: You have different voting credentials and tokens for each categorie. Try to don't get confused.

Thank you for your vote!

Regards,
zehjotkah

EDIT: Hmpf, found now the last instructions.txt - it seems we must recreate a own for each categorie. There are no placeholder for the canidates - but I don't unterstand how the tokens are filled in. Is this the correct document?

Does the users.csv include meego.com users too?

I'm sure it doesn't include those users and since meego.com has currently no voting system and we are unable to doublecheck those users we are sadly limited to maemo.org only. I would say including MeeGo.com to the voting was not elaborated to the last consequence in the first place.

We have currently a lot toooo much problems and trouble setting up the current voting system (already a month behind the scedule) so I guess we have currently no other choice beside to drop the users with only a MeeGo.com account (I would say clearly the minority - even if it hurts) :(

Perhaps not the best solution but if no other one has a working solution we have to follow the current plan. Otherwise we are unable to vote before 2012... :(

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

users.csv update: no, just maemo.org. we won't get meego.com users.

donation update: 50€ by reinob Thanks a lot!

time update: I've probably no time this week, so you can't imagine how thankfully I am when I'm getting help from you guys! Thanks!

What have to be done update: we have the SQL database, we have the users.csv. Now we have to get the users.csv into the database according to Daves instructions. Please drop me a line if you want to do that.
And then step 4. We can use info at meetmeego dot org for that.

Prizes update: I had a meeting with Nokia yesterday. We talked about MeeGo and its future and of course the prizes.
Probably you read the rumors about Intel to stop MeeGo development and Samsung taking over. I talked to Dawn Foster (Community Manager at Intel) some days ago and she wasn't able to assure me that there will be a MeeGo Conference in January.
Nokia wants to stick to their word and sponsor us the main prizes. But we think it would be wise to not depend on the MeeGo Conference.
We had some nice ideas already, but I'll tell you more about that tomorrow when I know which of these ideas is okay for Nokia.
Just to prevent any unfulfilled expectations: there are no Nokia N950 devices anymore, unfortunately.

What data does the users.csv contain? Only eMail addresses or more stuff?

Please be careful with the users.csv - those are personal data even if it contains only the email adresses.

this is my entry in the users.csv:

zehjotkah,"Cosimo Kroll",Cosimo,Kroll,zehjotkah@*myemailaddress*.com ,"2009-12-10 11:01:21",535,http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=12571
not sure what the date means, because it is not the date I've registered
also I don't know what the number after the date means...

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

In my humble opinion we not only need access for the last step, no we need moreover a very trustworthy person and someone with enough skills to do this job.

I don't want to find later my Email adress somewhere on the web. :(

Could Dave recommend us someone?
Who had setup the voting the last time?

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

I wrote Bergie a PM - he has edited the instructions.txt 2008 - perhaps he is able to help us. (only 10 days left for a possible voting) :(

Helmuth 2011-09-07 08:51

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

Okay, this was the reply I got from bergie:
Quote:

Please have the Council send a request on this to support@nemein.com
I guess the company nemein created our election system. I don't know how this could help us at the moment. I have no clue...
This is very frustrating. :( Who is setting up the council voting at the end of September?

Should I write Texrat or Reggie a PM and ask if they know who some dude who is able and skilled enought to help us?

zehjotkah 2011-09-07 10:16

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

Yes, please.
btw I don't see a problem to have the voting in the same timeframe as the council voting, or am I mistaken?

Thanks a lot for your effort!

edit:
I got the users.csv from Aslan Venejoki from nemein...

Nemein is bergie's company. I guess he's saying that he wants the request to set this up to come from the council and to come via email rather than PM.

By the way, I wrote neither Texrat nor Reggie a PM, yet. I'm still hoping for a reply from the Council if they could write bergie a EMail.

Or should I write Texrat in the meantime an PM while we are waiting?

Re: MeeGo Coding Competition 2011

yesterday i talked to the developer who made the competition.meetmeego.org site and he came up with the idea to host our own voting system (based on the same software as the maemo.org voting system).
i said that he should do it, if we won't get an answer from the council until today.
just wrote him an email. he said he could use the system for another project as well, so if the maemo.org system runs in the meantime it is no problem to use it and not the meetmeego.org one.
