Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
According to Engadget google has decided to make Android more closed, read the story here:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/31/g...censees-abide/ What do you guys think? A lost opportunity, or a new one for MeeGo as the open-source ruler of portables in the near future? Future disruption, eat your heart out :D |
Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
My hope is that more hardware manufacturers are going to support MeeGo now, this is not old news no?

Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
Even if Google now closes it's code, Android has to big inertia with regular people who don't really care if their phone is open or not. :(
Edit: It was a brilliant plan to lure the developers with open source, and then cut them off, when they have an investment in things. |
Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
If they close their binaries and such, hardware manufacturers lose the ability to make custom layers over the Android OS (HTC sense for starters) So this can be a setback for them.
Also, of the OS will no longer be supplied freely, the obvious next step for a such a company would be to charge manufacturers in order to use it's OS.. |

april fools maybe?
if not CRAP, Meego needs to survive. i bet some will stick with gingerbread for a long time |
Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
I wouldn't take anything Engadget says too seriously.

Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
I thought Google kept Android closed while in development anyway, only releasing the source after they officially release each version. All this sounds like is Google having more restrictive agreements with the companies that they let have the code early.

need more then this before anyone panics
the honeycomb thing is somewhat understandable - and aside from this bit all other parts of the article are "he said" and "she said" |
Re: Google changes strategy of Android, closed (speculate)
Google will not close the code.
They will, however, tighten up on the requirements vendors must meet in order to use the Android trademarks and Google provided services/applications. Enforcement will be managed by the obvious condition that if enough vendors avoid the Android trademark and Google services, Google will drop development of Android and the vendors will have to scramble for a new OS. Google can continue with the AOSP unabated, and I suspect they will. |
