The screen (read: HARDWARE) on the N900 does not allow this. It's all on or off, not single pixels.

I have often wondered if it is possible to take the screen brightness down to zero percent while leaving the LCD on.

This is possible. You have to echo brightness values to a particular line in a settings file. I dont remember that line now.. you can search for it

echo 0 >/sys/class/backlight/acx565akm/brightness

auto-brightness resets the level after a few sec but you can turn that off

As far as I know there's no FOSS-replacement for locked screen. Also, the locked screen is very, very hard to hack, from what I've read. So for now, no, not for Maemo. If the CSSU-group would be able to import the locked screen from MeeGo and (assumably) it is open sourced then maybe.

For more information see this thread : Anyway to remove the text "Swipe to unlock" from the lock screen?

that means simple brightness can have more level of brightness(instead of five)
