Can you calibrate N900 accelerometer?

Mine is off by about 15 degrees.

Without a calibration program how do you *know* it's out of sync by about 15 degrees.....? It could be whatever app you are using it with that is "out by 15 degrees"....

Re: Can you calibrate N900 accelerometer?

I tried a few apps, the angle measuring one, and few games like nfsu (preenv).
Edit.
I tested it with Roller Coaster 3D, and it was the same problem.

download healthcheck from the repos and swipe right until you get to "Sensor Explorer". Go in there and click on the n900.accelerometer. Then click "Start" with your phone laying on a flat surface that you know is *roughly* level. The output from the accelerometer should be approx 0 for both x and y axes and approx 10 for the z-axis.

If not, then you may have a borked accelerometer.

mine is off by a few degrees too, it would be nice if it was possible to apply an offset to the reading thereby calibrating it.

Being able to apply an offset to make it read nearer to correct does not mean a borked accelerometer.

I clicked multiple times to refresh the info, this is correct. It was on an almost straight (according to my iPod touch) table. So this is bad news?

EDIT.

I got it to zero. Pretty bad...

Thats interesting... I have to admit the numbers will never/rarely be 0 :P

Lying flat on the desk mine is : 18,18,1188
Standing with the power button facing up : 54, -972, -162

Thats the closest result to yours :P

You can calls read/cat the values from here in terminal -
/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-3/3-001d/coord

Pop onto this page to take a look at the standard outputs (2 pics!)

The way that seems to work to reset it is to remove the battery for a few minutes, then boot up again - it normally has recalibrated (if the actual hardware part has not beenknocked that is)

Re: Can you calibrate N900 accelerometer?

When measuring with power button upwards look at it from the side and make sure the back cover is straight. My accelerometer is a little of too but not much at all. Also note that the axis might me over 1000 or under it due to differences in the gravitational pull around the world.

I'm currently experimenting on some accelerometer coding and when i have the device layed on the table it always givem me roughly the same angle even after several boots.

Keeping battery out helped!

(Power button up)

EDIT.

Maybe it did not... I just got lucky to get this, after more testing and a few games it appears to be the same.

EDIT 2

Now I get results exactly as they should be according to Nokia. Or the same as you do.

So maybe I am "holding it wrong", and it is all ok...

Re: Can you calibrate N900 accelerometer?

Attitude is a good way to test out your accelerometer, trying it out right now.
OK, I got 1.1° with an iPod touch, and 3.0° with a N900. A minuscule difference, but it would be nice if it was possible to apply an offset of 2°, as uTMY mentioned.
